In 2007, I was a young and naive college sophomore. My main concern was being selected to join a prestigious black sorority. Although I was initially apprehensive due to rumors of hazing and pledging, I soon embraced those rumors, wholeheartedly believing that being hazed would make me appreciate membership even more.�I was selected with a group of nine other girls, under the assumption that after pre-pledging in the spring of 2008, we would pledge in the fall. Yet, after twenty weeks of pre-pledging--buying food for sorority members, cleaning their houses, attending countless late night "study sessions"--I was no closer to being a member of the sorority. Instead of attending a pinning ceremony in the fall of 2008, I found myself in a hearing against the sorority, relaying exactly what had happened over those twenty weeks.[Originally published 2009]

I published this book in July of 2009, a semester after the hearing against the "Epsilon" chapter.

I want to make it clear that I'm no sell out, no bitter bitch who secretly wants to see a certain chapter burned to the ground; no ex sorority prospect turned religious; no victim vilifying my past experiences in hopes of garnering sympathy; nor am I a starving author in search of a paycheck. I'm a writer. That's it. I chose to write this book as an act of closure, a way to express my feelings, and a way to say goodbye to the person I used to be.

Every time I see the words "Theta Eta Theta" etched onto a license plate or sewn onto a woman's lanyard I wonder: "What did she go through to be able to wear that? How much did she have to do to get in? Was she 'paper'?" Although I'll never be able to ask every woman of Theta Eta Theta that question, I can live with myself for making the decision I made.

A Sorority Memoir!

Wow. A true story from a young woman about trying to get into a sorority. It has excellent detail, humor, sorrow, college life, and lots of drama. This is a must read for anybody, especially young ladies, ages 15-25. Or parents of any teens. Captain Of My Soul is a great book club pick and discussion novel for families.
Whitney wrote a very vulnerable, honest, funny and courageous account of what happened during her college life. I applaud her memoir and hope others will, too.

Wow!!!

Great book. To be honest, I was expecting this book to come from the perspective of a disgruntled reject who played the victim. After reading, I suggest it to anyone unsure of their reasons for pursuing membership into one of these organizations. I appreciated that the author did not minimize all of Greek life, but more shared her personal experience. Also, I liked that she did not equate her specific experience to the organization as a whole. I couldn't put this book down!!

Hard to put down--even when characters are verbally pelted with putdowns.

I started and finished reading this book over the course of three days. I'd never considered pledging in a Greek social sorority, and while I'm five years out of college, I could completely envision the campus situation. Whitney Gracia Williams's story took me right back to memories of a similar campus with a small black Greek population, and shed some light on an extreme, an "extra" (to use the author's word) section of a chapter. I think that the need for secrecy and "discretion" in most [all] aspects of this pre-pledging life led to the girls involved wanting to do everything they could not to disturb the status-quo and risk their presumed chances of being picked to "cross over" in the future. It was a very weird and strange mentality to have for those of us who are reading Whitney's story, but I'm sure in varying degrees we may have all had similar experiences of not wanting to "rock the boat" because of our belief that "good things come to those who wait"...or are patient or strong-willed.
It really was hard to get through all of the sludge (I can't think of a better word at the moment) that the ten girls were going through, but the story was never uninteresting. The reader sees Whitney's gradual change from a bit of a crazy-pledge-scoffer to gotta-get-through-this (WILL-get through-this) personality to an "awakened" individual again. I recommend this memoir to any person who's interested in pledging Greek--or learning more about the extremities to which some chapters go. There are plenty of script-like dialogues and (eyeball-rolling, eyebrow-raising) emails to read aloud to anyone who'll care to listen. Some are downright funny, and some are downright disturbing--as in, "What are these [so-and-so's] thinking??" Going over some of the scenes again (either alone or with others) really emphasizes how hard it is to follow logic when your gut and eyes and previous experiences to certain stimuli or people encourages following along without verbalizing your questions to the "people in charge."
I think that the ultimate message this book left with me is that our actions or inactions to events powers whatever "strengths" those seemingly in charge have over us. This is an extreme example, but it a tribal culture considers purple rocks (or even purple bottle caps!) to be their currency of choice, the average paper money a "civilized" visitor wants to use for trade may not work so well for them unless it's of some use to that native people. So when others come to believe that purple bottle caps rock or colored paper rocks, the items will have some worth. For a lot of non-Greeks (myself included), letters have no real importance to me right now. They don't affect my life one way or the other. So while we all may have our versions of "gotta have it! Greek letters" (be they red high tops or a DDS or Esquire at the end of one's name, or certain tatoos on each hip), there may or may not be a limit to how far we'll go to achieve that goal. It's best to feel happy with the definition of yourself before setting your heart of achieving a certain "status." Because you may still feel empty once that status has been achieved, and then what will all that suffering and sacrifice have been for?
Many of us may never know how we'd react in a similar situation in the circumstances described for the author and some of her friends, but we can definitely imagine. I can only hope that I'd do my best to take the high road as well. Read Whitney's story. Follow her personal journey and decide for yourself what you might do.
