The trend to include exercises has been taken to another level. There are more than 100 of them therein for those who enjoy testing themselves. So there are lots of goodies for the money. I liked the writing style and found the book to be a great deal of fun. The personal touch of the author is everywhere, and the homespun novelties and analyzes are stimulating. About the Author
Alexey Bezgodov (1969) is a Russian Grandmaster and writer. He was Russian Champion in 1993 and came shared first in the 1999 Ukrainian Championship. He is the author of The Extreme CaroKann (2014), another highly original chess opening book.

The Best Book on the Baltic Defense

After playing through several games in this book, I will say that I like the author's comments and annotations. From what I have seen elsewhere on this defense, I would say that if you intend to play this defense, then this is the book to have. I think the author is straightforward and objective in his evaluations.
However, I was disappointed in the omission of the line: 1.d4 d5, 2.c4 Bf5, 3.cxd5 Bxb1, 4.Qa4+ c6, 5.Rxb1 Qxd5, 6. Nf3 Nd7, 7. Bd2. This (7.Bd2) seems to be a strong move, and I am not sure how it could have been overlooked by the author. I came across a review of this book that I think sums up things very well. I had to knock off a star for the missing line that I mentioned, and I knocked off another star because I think the index of variations doesn't facilitate finding particular lines and the associated games as readily as it should. Nevertheless, despite those two items, the author has done a very good job in presenting this defense to anyone that has a desire to learn it. I don't think you will find a better treatment of it anywhere else.
