About the Author
Paul H. Chappell is an Associate Professor of Medical Engineering in Electronics and Computer Science at the University of Southampton (UK). Dr Chappell has published over 160 papers and has extensive teaching experience in power electronics, electromechanical design and medical electronics. He is a Fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology, a Fellow of the Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine, a Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers and a Member of the Institute of Physics.

RARE POWER ELECTRONICS RESOURCE!!

Are you interested in seeking out and using he latest devices in the designs of novel power electronic circuits? If you are, then this book is for you. Author Paul H. Chappell, has done an outstanding job of writing a book that contains a description of the characteristics of different types of power semiconductor devices and their application to power converter circuits.
Author Chappell, begins with a description of how power electronics is concerned with solid state devices for the control and conversion of electrical power. Next, the author explains how a diode allows for current flow in one direction only, and has no current flowing through it when reverse biased. In addition, he defines the thyristor, which is a four-layered semiconductor that has three terminals. The author also presents the transistor, which is a three-terminal device. Then, he continues by explaining why a voltage across a power semiconductor device with a current flowing through it causes heating of the silicon. The author then addresses the connection of two thyristors in parallel, which creates a device that can control the ac voltage applied to a load. Next, he covers the cycloconverter, which is a device that converts ac voltages to ac voltages at a frequency that is lower than the supply frequency. In addition, the author defines an inverter as converting a dc voltage supply into an ac voltage. He also shows you how the average voltage across a load can be controlled by applying a dc supply voltage for some of the time at a fixed frequency. Then, the author shows you why it is important that an electronic controller operate successfully in a noisy environment. Finally, he shows you how to calculate the mean voltage for a half wave rectifier and full-wave rectifier that has a single-phase supply voltage of 120V.
This most excellent book has been written as an introductory text containing the useful concepts and building blocks that go into making a power converter operate successfully. In addition, this great book also presents the fundamental art of power electronics, and encourages you to seek out and use the latest devices in the design of novel power electronic circuits.
