About the Author
Dr. Aschheim has more than 25 years of private practice experience in all aspects of cosmetic and restorative dentistry. He has lectured and conducted workshops throughout the world and has been a major contributor to the dental literature.

He joined the staff of the Department Of Dentistry at the Mount Sinai Medical Center in as a Clinical Instructor and was promoted to Assistant Professor in 1992 and Section Chief of Esthetic Dentistry and Advanced Technologies in 1999. He was elevated to Associate Clinical Professor in 2004. He also joined the staff of the Advanced Programs for International Dentists at New York University College of Dentistry as an Associate Clinical Professor in 2011.

Following the September 11th attack of the World Trade Center, Dr. Aschheim became a dental consultant to the Office of the Medical Examiner for the City of New York. He was instrumental in setting up the digital image acquisition section and served as a liaison between the department and the developer of the dental identification software utilized by the NYC Medical Examiner's office. Since that time he has developed a new software package that should further reduce the time necessary to make a dental identification in mass disasters and has given lectures and workshops on the subject. He was appointed Assistant Chief Forensic Odontologist to the New York City Office of Chief Medical Examiner in 2009. He has also consulted throughout the world on Forensic Dental Informatics and won the ADA SCDI Informatics award in 2011.

Mediocre at best

Attractive layout, nice diagrams, broad coverage of areas. Very poor information. Lack of basic info. For example, according to the book, the ideal prep for a pfm is 360 shoulder with bevel. I don't think anyone would seriously use this. Discussion of luting and cements for all ceramics is cursory. In conclusion: there are much better sources out there for the money. Steer clear.

My Favorite How To Do Draw Monsters & Mecha Book

I really like this book. It does a good job of starting with basic shapes & then progress to final drawing.

And the final drawings in the book even show you how to put them together. For example monsters fighting mecha. Which is a nice touch because that's what we all want to do.

I think this would be a great book for older (10+) kids. Because they will be old enough to follow the guidelines. And this doesn't waste time on shading exercises. Which are important to make advanced drawing but when beginning its better to do some fun work. Then fill in the stuff like shading balls over & over again.

Very poor introduction to the subject

Claiming to be a book which bridges the divide between the worlds of academia and populism, Japan Pop! gets off to a poor start with an absurdly high cover price likely to put it out of reach of the casual J-Pop Culture fan. The price might have been justified had this been a glossy, photo-packed book, but seems ludicrous given that it is merely a collection of 17 essays. The essays dwell on four major areas of contemporary J-Pop Culture: music, manga and animation, TV & film and the popularity of J-Pop Culture outside of the country. It comes as little surprise that Mark Schilling's contribution, about the Tora-san character in the Otoko wa Tsurai yo (It's Tough Being a Man) film series, is the most interesting - not necessarily because of the topic, but because Schilling is the only contributor who is a writer of any repute. The majority of these essays are written by academics and it shows: footnotes abound, the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers get analysed to the nth degree and claims are made that "Sailor Moon's rearrangement of the traditional superhero myth bears hints of not only a new social order, but also the kind of moral struggles, alliances, and identities that may create and accompany it." The book also contains a number of confidence-sapping factual errors (example: Osaka band Shonen Knife "started playing in the mid-1980s" which is not true, they started playing in December 1981). Schilling's Encyclopedia of Japanese Pop Culture (Weatherhill) remains the definitive starting point for those seeking a good, accessible introduction to the subject; Japan Pop! is only for the otaku completist, and a wealthy one at that.

an academic tired of bad academics

In a word, this book is a mess. Methodologically suspect and theoretically uninformed, it relies on antiquated Orientalist assumptions of essential cultural identity and unchanging social forms to make the multifarious sources it cites all sound the same, which is too bad, because it is the only English-language 'scholarship' available at present on many of the topics covered. A wasted opportunity that makes me sad and mad.

Japan Pop! Fascinating and entertaining

For anyone who has noticed the ubiquity of anime, sushi shops, Japanese style and other aspects of Japanese culture, this book provides a welcome and readable introduction to what Japanese popular culture is and where it comes from. I particularly liked the chapters on music but I probably learned more about Japanese culture and the mind set behind it from the chapters on television and anime. This book explains not only that there is a Japanese poular culture, but why it is the way it is. Highly recommended.

The place to start after you know Hangul!

I was living in Korea a few years ago and had a really difficult time finding beginner materials. There were tons of great books that taught you to read Hangul, the Korean alphabet, but that is probably the easiest part of learning Korean. Most of the other books available after that point were much better suited as college textbooks. They had a ton of vocabulary every lesson, fairly dense explanations for everything, progressed too fast and introduced too many new ideas at once.

This book, which I found when I returned years later for a visit, is what I wish I had started with. Each day's lessons are "bite sized" and very manageable-- if you're an English speaker who has never studied a language like Korean before, this is exactly what you need. New ideas are kept short and to the point, and each day introduces a small, manageable amount of vocabulary. The style is cutesy- perhaps too much for some, but far more enjoyable than pages and pages of tiny-print and charts that I found in too many other places! I suggest working this book first (it only takes a month or so) before moving on to other materials-- it will give you a good foundation to progress from.

Buyer beware most Hangul characters don't display!

While I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn Korean, I would warn those interested to buy a hardcopy of the book. As soon as I started to look over the eBook I saw that the Korean characters didn't display properly. Instead of seeing Hangul characters the eBook displays a bunch of empty boxes in the places the characters should be. Since I had heard that this was a good learning resource, I searched the web and purchased a printed hardcopy from a seller in South Korea. If you're interested in this book don't waste any money on the eBook. While having access to your books in the kindle/eReader is convenient, not being able to use one is frustrating, disappointing and a waste of good money. Save yourself the trouble and avoid this eBook.

Great place to begin after learning Hangul

After learning the Hangul alphabet, this book is a great place to begin learning the language. There are supposed to be audio files available from the website, but as the website is in a language I do not yet greatly understand, I admit I cannot find the audio files. But that is only a minor drawback as I can find audio examples with a simple Internet search.

Pleasant but lightweight

I bought this book knowing it would be lightweight -- yet I hoped there might be some nuggets of insight. There are a few but I can't help feeling disappointed in this 140-page book (it's not 250 pages, as Amazon indicates). The book I'm comparing it to is Joel Spolsky's dense and meaty 360-page "Joel on Software." There's no comparison. Not complaining -- "The Developer's Code" is a pleasant read on the commute home but still .... Maybe in a few years a second edition will roll out and be more substantial in content.

The book is divided into 52 sections (the last two of which haven't been numbered), with titles like "Lie to Simplify," "Invest in a Good Work Environment," "Work Outside the Bedroom," and "Teach with Obvious Examples." It can't be said there are earth-shattering insights in these sections.

Its The Book I Wish I Wrote

While the author has been in the IT field for 15 years, I've been in this profession for 30 years. If I had to write down what I've learned over the last 30 years, this books collection of essays would have been it! Its an easy read that allows you to spend 10-15 minutes here and there reading bite by bite. I liked how the topics were laid out as it made the book easier to read.

Chapter 4 on productivity presented a great idea on how to take "Ta-Da", the free to-do list progam from 37 Signals one step higher. The author's simple technique in Essay 22 has already helped me to better track my accomplishments. Chapter 9, entitled "Pride" was a real pleasure to read. I liked how he explained the phenomena of the cooking-show industry, how its changed over the years, and how software development should use this as a marketing idea. The chapter also talked about "The Healing Power of Construction Work" and how developers fall into the same boat as construction workers, namely, that software development is therapeutic.

In summary, it was a great book to read on my Kindle and reminded me of things I learned in the past but have forgotten.

A few of these essays will change the way I do my work...

I like books that gather a number of essays and thoughts about technology (in this case, software development) and bundle them in a single volume so I can contemplate what it is I do as a profession. The Developer's Code - What Real Programmers Do by Ka Wai Cheung (published by Pragmatic Bookshelf) fits that description perfectly. I've often said that one or two gems from a book like this can make it an excellent buy. For me, this one met and surpassed that criteria.

None of the essays here (52 in total) are technical in nature. You won't learn a new way to code algorithms or do systems architecture. Instead, they delve into mind-sets and concepts on how to think about the work and how it's done. An example would be the first two essays in the section on metaphors in software development. Since we've equated software construction to building construction, we tend to over-plan a system and nail everything down before we write a single line of code. But in reality, code is flexible and changeable, whereas bricks and mortar can't be easily "fixed" once it's put down. The metaphor of "construction" means that we may over-plan before writing code (think waterfall vs. agile), thereby limiting our productivity. Metaphors aren't bad, but you do need to be careful that it doesn't inadvertently create boundaries that don't exist.

I personally found the section on teaching fascinating. Specifically, "Lie to Simplify" put words behind a problem I fall prey to on far too many occasions. When trying to teach someone a new skill or feature, I want to tell them absolutely everything... all the edge cases, the minor oddities, and the obscure errors where things don't work as advertised. The problem is that the student doesn't even understand the basic concepts, much less the esoterica. Rather than dump everything on them at once, just lie. Tell them how things work in 95% of the situations. Don't even mention the exceptions... until they've mastered the basics. Once they know that knowledge, you can fill in the blanks. That single essay right there will change the way I convey information to others.

Since everyone comes from different backgrounds and experience levels, everyone will have different reactions to The Developer's Code. But I think I'm safe in saying it's well worth reading, and you should easily find the two or three gems that will make your purchase a wise investment in yourself.
