the most important book for all politicians to read!

the most inspirational book i've read. we cannot survive without an uncontaminated source of water but unfortunately civilization doesn't find this important - particularly politicians in usa, australia and uk who are all proponents of fluoridated drinking water! the bit about the 108 elements relating to the same resonating as the 108 buddhist 'sins' = nothing short of amazing. even found a cure in it for my hens salmonella poisoning they caught from my neighbours feeding wild pidgeons 2 years ago. i've kept the salmonella at bay for 14 months with charcoal but i needed a complete cure and worked it out with a little statement about using a cure from the same 'curse' (eg arsenic dilluted millions of times will become a medicine for someone with arsenic poisoning). well it works with snake venom so why not with other items (pidgeons droppings!)....

One of the best books on the Roman Catholic Church

As someone who has studied the Dark Ages, the Reformation, and the history of the conflict with Rome against the true Gospel, I can testify that this is one of the best books ever written on Rome. But what this author does, which is so needed, is to show the influence of the Roman Church in the modern world. He cites papal bulls, encyclicals, and one source after another, showing the manipulations of the Catholic Church in modern times. Robbins proves beyond any doubt that Rome has continued to pursue its ambition of world domination, in spite of all the media propaganda to the contrary, and the opinion of blinded evangelicals who seem to believe that the pope is now an "angel of light" or that Catholicism is simply another denomination of Christianity.

This is a great book for research and reference, very meticulously put together. If you are someone who has been following the trail of historic evidence to figure out why the Freemasons, the Skull and Bones, and the Illuminati seem to get blamed for everything -- while most researchers ignore the Vatican and the Jesuit Order -- then this book should be in your library. The author proves that the cry of the Reformers against the Great Harlot of Revelation 17 was not in vain. The Bible gives no uncertain sound as to the danger of the city on seven hills, and neither does this excellent book.

I highly recommend this book for anyone looking to understand the working of the Roman Catholic Church in world
politics today. John W. Robbins presents an amazing array of facts, and up to date info. on the Vatican.
Perhaps most compelling was his documentation of Rome's intelligence agency, which is said to be the largest
and most capable in the world. Great book for research!

A Terrific Book With Minor Flaws

Robbins takes up the considerable task of examining what the Catholic
Church position on economics and politics is and has been over its 1500+
year history. He does this using church canon law, papal writings, and
the writings of its intellectual Fathers like Aquinas. In other words,
he uses a great deal of primary source material to justify his analysis.
(Well, he uses quotes of the source material found in later anthologies,
to be more precise.) To support his analysis and conclusions, Robbins
also cites a breadth of commentators and critics of Catholicism both
from within and outside the Church.
This is primarily a work of scholarship not a popular or religious
commentary (except as noted in the "Flaws" section below). Having said
that, _you_ do not particularly have to be a scholar to understand it.
Some general understanding of Church and secular history is helpful,
and, if you are unschooled in theological terminology, a dictionary
would be helpful.
Except as noted in the "Flaws" section below, this is primarily a work
on economics and politics. Of necessity, it also addresses some issues
of Church doctrine and theology, since the economic/ political theory
springs in some degree from that doctrine.
The Punchline
-------------
Robbins critique' is devastating. He makes a compelling case that the
intellectual tradition of Catholicism is statist, collectivist, hostile
to constitutional government, friendly to fascism and totalitarian
secular states, hostile to property rights, and even supportive of
slavery and other human rights abuses. He further demonstrates that
these were not just the positions of the ancient Roman Church, but are
the intellectual currency of the Vatican through the late 20th Century.
Along the way, he provides a lot of little historical tidbits like how
the claim of the Church for temporal political power is founded on a
document ("The Donation Of Constantine" - reproduced in the Appendix)
known to be a forgery as early as the 15th Century. Finally, and
importantly, he addresses late 20th Century efforts to rewrite history
and present the Church as friendly to Classical Liberal ideas.
Like many non-Catholics, I'd always assumed that the Roman Church's
excesses were merely the product of unfettered power prior to the
Reformation, and that it had adapted to Classical Liberal ideas in the
West. Robbins demolishes this idea, and goes to some lengths to show
just how hostile the intellectual underpinnings of the Church remain to
Capitalist economy, property rights, separation of Church and State, and
so forth. I never quite understood how an institution putatively
fighting evil could stand by quietly during the Nazi attrocities or the
pederasty within the priesthood. Now I get it.
Flaws
-----
Robbins is a scholar, but he is also a devout Christian in the
Westminster Confession Presbyterian tradition. In and of itself, this
presents no problem. However, this book is by turns history, analysis,
and polemic. The polemic is thankfully minimal, but he undermines the
credibility of his scholarship when he includes footnote comments like,
"the antichrist can be heard in the encyclicals of the present pope." I
have no particular objection to his doctrinal observations and opinions,
they are simply not segregated clearly from his historical scholarship
and analysis, which is after all, what the book is supposed to be about.
In weaving his theological commentary into the economic/political
history, he opens himself up to the legitimate criticism that parts of
the book read like a religious tract rather than pure scholarship.
In those places where he does indulge in theological observations, he
does a poor job of defining terms. His use of the term "Christian" or
"Scriptural" are not what most secular readers or even Catholic readers
would understand them to be. I have the advantage of a pretty thorough
background in Christian theology in various traditions, but if you do
not, these portions of the book will seem at least strange, or more
probably, inflamatory and ad hominem in nature (which I do not believe
he intended).
Thankfully, this is a minor problem - the book remains primarily a
historical fact gathering and critique' of Catholic economics and
politics.
The other problem here is validating the analysis (I take it on faith
that Robbins facts are right). I am aware of no scholarly response to
Robbins claims which might refute or amend his conclusions. It would be
interesting to see, for example, a Jesuit response to this book...
Finally, there is a theme taken up in the book I wish he had spent more
time on. Early in the writing, he shows how our modern Classical Liberal
ideas about property and personal rights sprang, in part, from the
Calvinist Reformation thinkers. Furthermore, in keeping with the overall
theme of the book, he goes on to say that these Classical Liberal ideas
were in direct opposition to Roman Catholic thinking. I wish he would
have _ended_ the book with this topic and expanded it a lot more. There
is some very rich analysis to be done here, and his treatment is long on
assertion, but shallow in supporting evidence. What's there is really
good, but I wanted another 50 pages on this topic alone because it is
not well treated in any Church History I've ever seen.
Recommendation
--------------
As I said at the outset, this is just a terrific piece of scholarship
and writing. It is as about well written as something of this nature can
be ... it is not an "easy" read, but it is not a dry scholastic text
either. If you enjoy reading detailed histories, you should enjoy this
as well. Again, I caution the devout Catholics among us - be prepared to
be shocked, dismayed, and/or angry if you read this - Robbins
conclusions are extremely unkind (to say the least) to Roman
Catholicism, both past and present.

About the Author
Born in 1893 in Lancashire, England, Dorothy Whipple wrote nine extremely successful novels, two of which were made into films. She also wrote short stories and two volumes of memoirs. She died in 1966. Nina Bawden is the celebrated author of Carrie's War, Peppermint Pig, and The Witch's Daughter, among others. A number of her works have been dramatized by BBC Children's television. She currently lives in London and Nauplion, Greece.

Cliched and hoary divorce plot, but exquisitely written

Dorothy Whipple has been one of the authors Persephone Books has been most proud to re-dsicover, and the beautifully sharp prose in this 1950s novel will alert you immediately why she's been a favorite. Yet for all that the novel is bit of a disappointment. The plot seems reminsicent of Clare Booth Luce's THE WOMEN: a noble-minded wealthy married woman loses her weak and contempible husband to the clutches of a stylish and spiteful vixen, while her daughter suffers tremendously and her friends cluck and sympathize. Some of the characters are also quite hard to take. Anne, the sickeningly adorable daughter, carries on so much when her father is caught with the French interloper, Louise, that you begin to develop a perverse delight in her unhappiness; and all the male characters are wholly two-dimensional weaklings. With the older women characters, however, Whipple seems right on the money. The heroine, Ellen, is perhaps a bit too noble but is also observed with sympathy and skill, and Louise, the clear villain, is surprisingly well-drawn too. Whipple's ability to turn a memorable phrase is also consistent throughout.

A must read story about the end of marital bliss.

A marriage of over two decades is in danger, and the culprit seems to be the groom's own mother. "Someone at a Distance" is the story of Ellen and Avery North, a happily married couple with two children; all seems well with their life. But when Avery's mother arranges for a French girl to become a companion for him, it incites a long and confusing turmoil for everyone involved. Composed in an enthralling and realistic manner, "Someone at a Distance" is a must read story about the end of marital bliss.

Amazing

Dorothy Whipple's Someone at a Distance is a very complicated novel to write about. It's the story of the Norths, a suburban couple with two teenage children. Avery North's aging mother engages a young Frenchwoman as her companion, and he develops an attachment to her that develops into an affair and later leads to divorce from his wife Ellen. This novel is a stunning book about the wide-ranging effects an affair can have on several families.

Dorothy Whipple's language is very simple. Her prose is uncomplicated, yet there's a lot of meaning behind it. Her upper-middle-class English characters are all absorbed in their own mundane lives, until the arrival of Louise literally shakes them all up. Louise is obviously not meant to be a sympathetic character (unlike Ruth in Susan Glaspell's Fidelity); and at times she devolves into the stereotypical "other woman." Much more preferable is Ellen, the sensible English housewife who finds her life shattered during the after the divorce.

It's a sad subject, yet there are some truly funny moments; the surly Miss Daley going postal on Louise is an example that comes to mind. So in the end, each of the characters get what they deserve--even Avery, towards whom I feel a bit ambivalent. I feel as though he simply sat back and let things happen to him, rather than be an active member of the cast of characters.

It's interesting that I've chosen to read this book now, so shortly after reading another Persephone title, Fidelity--it's the story of an extramarital affair as told from the conventional point of view. Despite my feelings towards Avery and Louise, I though many of the other characters were well-drawn. Whipple's description of the angst teenage Anne goes through is very real, as are the difficulties that Ellen must feel as she prepares for a life alone. After all, she's been married for twenty years, and she's never had a job or had to pay her own bills; how will she cope? It's funny, then, how Ellen ultimately finds solace in a group of elderly ladies. Like the other Whipple novel I've read, The Priory, this is not a novel in which much "happens," but it's a powerfully emotional novel. Whipple's prose is simple, as I've said, but her way with words is absolutely stellar. She really knew how to play on her readers' emotions, so that you feel invested in the lives of her characters.

Beal has taught art to children at the Village Community School in New York for 25 years. Her method involves encouraging long-term familiarity with art materials so that children ages five to ten can master the materials and use them to express their own life experiences. In chapters on collage, painting, clay, drawing, printmaking, and 3-D construction, Beal discusses how to set up the art situation and how to speak to children about their artwork to encourage their creative expression. Short sections at the end of the chapters discuss what materials and techniques are best suited for use at home. A helpful book

Going into my first year as an art teacher after many years of not working in the education field, I was nerved up and needed some inspiration and reinforcement of theories, ideas, and concepts I had learned in school so many years before. The book was very readable and enjoyable. The concepts were clear and the anecdotes were very real. The students really came to life and her encouragement and demand for true quality showed in the examples in the book.

The only drawback to this book was that the author obviously came from a school district with much funding and she was lucky enough to have her own art room to present her ideas and use her very creative time savers. As an "art on the cart" teacher in a district with very tight funding, many things did not directly translate. However, the ideas in the book have inspired me to develop time savers and short cuts all my own.

I have found myself flipping though the book several times and rereading sections about materials I am not as familiar with. This was one book that I am very glad to have purchased.

Great starting point

This is a great book to get you started if you are attempting to teach art to children. Art can be taught in so many different ways and there are so many different views on how to teach art. This method of teaching is based on providing materials to children and allowing them to be entirely creative with very little direction. I haven't tried teaching this method yet but I am interested to see how it goes. I was looking for a curriculum that gave me a little more art instruction and talked a little bit about famous artists and famous works of art. That isn't what this book is about but it did offer an approach to teaching art that I had not considered. This book talks mostly about teaching children how to use art materials. If the children are comfortable using the art materials then they will have the freedom to express their creativity with those materials. I think this book is valuable and I am excited to use the ideas presented. I think the best thing about the book is that it gives you as the teacher some valuable tips on how to talk to children about their own art. Sometimes what we say to children about their art changes how they feel about their own work. I think teachers have the ability to instill great confidence but too often we don't know how to do that. With the help of this book I hope to effectively talk to my students about their work and allow their creativity to motivate their work rather than my preconceived ideas.

This Book Offers the Resource of Experience

This book stands out as a resource for art teachers because it is more than just ideas and directions for projects and crafts. The author shares her experiences and lessons-learned from 25 years of teaching art. As a newly hired art teacher for a private school, charged with creating my own curriculum, this book has become my jewel.
Ms. Beal presents a clearly focused method for teaching art to children with specific information about the developmental stages and abilities of elementary-aged children. She describes lessons and different types of media as they enable children to experience art. Her emphasis is on the experience, not the finished product. By controlling the environment through order and clearly defined limits, children can experience a process and master a technique without becoming confused or frustrated. She focuses on giving children the tools to make art a form of self-expression from the child outward, rather than from the adult in to the child. From her method of teaching, children understand basic concepts and learn that art has many layers -- art class is not just a bunch of arbitrary crafts or projects. This book has geat potential for adaptation to the Montessori classroom because of its hands-on approach and has children involved in every phase of art from the selection of materials to cleaning up.
I already have a fair amount of experience with art and with some teaching, but this book is really good for grounding -- it makes art and art lessons relevant, age-appropriate, logical, and positive. You get the sense that real learning and creativity happen in her classroom, rather than the chaotic, messy, nagging, direction-oriented approach that many of us envision in home or school art classes.

Purchased "Social Work Administration"

The best thing about this transaction was the price. It was very inexpensive and it was the book I wanted. The only criticism I have is the description said "like new" but the book arrived with the dust jacket missing and some pages had been annotated or highlighted by the previous owner. This is not a major complaint given the price, but I do not agree this is "like new" condition. I would have given the transaction a higher rating if the item description had been more accurate so that I was not expecting something "like new".

Useless Pocket filler.

Zig Ziglar is the master of sales. I have been reading his books since I started my career in auto sales and I credit much of my success to his knowledge and wisdom. So naturally, when I saw this book on Amazon and I realized that I had never read it, I ordered it. To my dismay, this book is not at all what I expected. Simply looking at it brought me to an uncontrollable episode of laughter, born of bewilderment and confusion.

It is a miniature pocket book which I would value at no more than $4. The concepts are very basic and in some cases, outdated. If you are a Sales Professional, don't waste your time or money on this book. There are no "refresher" ideas or any useful information for you at all. Pocket books are meant to be readily available so that you can quickly reference them for information. You will never ever have a need to take this book out of your pocket. In fact, it will probably serve you better as a paperweight. This booklet is perfect for beginners, and by beginners, I mean people who just started working in sales yesterday.

I still love amazon and I still respect Zig Ziglar. I'll just need to be more careful with what I order online.

Zig is still on point.

To be honest I had no idea what I was buying. I didn't realize that this was more of a Pocket Version than a full fledged book on it's own, but I don't think that's a bad thing. You should be aware that this book is indeed small, it fits into my inside jacket pocket and into my Levi's back pocket. That being said, it's like the Mighty Mouse of sales books, it packs a decent sized punch and can save the day if you give it a chance, plus it's kind of nostalgic.

I'm in my 40's and I've been reading Ziglar's stuff for my entire adult life and it still rings true. This book will do 1 of 2 things for you, it will either remind you of all the basics that you already knew or it will open your eyes to how much more there is to this business than just offering a product. I'm OK with either outcome actually. The principals that Zig outlines in this book are just the tip of the ice berg, it's like the CliffsNotes version of all of his other works. The title says it all actually, this is indeed Selling 101, a basic foundation to build upon.

There are many people in the Sales Industry that got there by accident. These are the people that just lucked out, maybe weren't the best students and maybe haven't read a book in years. This is a good little book because it's not intimidating, you can get through it in a couple of lunch hours and pull some useful info out of it. The best part is that even though Zig passed away a few years ago, he is still selling. This book is designed to Motivate you to better yourself, and with that desire you'll want to go further on the journey with Zig. Luckily his legacy is carried on by his family and you can buy all of his other books, his certifications and classes online. This book makes me want to buy more from him, and it's a win-win.

In the mean time I'm going to listen more, sell with integrity and proceed with a couple of simple plans.

Basics

This book is basic at best. It lacks a considerable amount of relevant examples in today's world. If you are looking for a job in sales and have never sold an item this book gives decent structure to a sales call. It also offers a good pep talk and gives insight to the possible future. However if you have had some sales training or have been selling for a couple years this book does not offer much.

I enjoyed the chapter on call reluctance the best as it showed me that everyone gets a little anxious when making a sales call. It also helped me reaffirm that I am equipped to be a salesperson and I have the basics down.

Not worth it for us...

It was a somewhat interesting read, but of little practical use, beyond the basics (key cards, queen ask and specific kings) for my partner and I. We play precision with lot's of bells and whistles, including Roman key card, so we are not put off by complexity. But the nuances this book provides won't come up often enough to merit the time we'd have to invest. And the idea of playing both 1430 and 3014, depending upon the preceding auction, put me off from page one. I was able to force myself to finish the book, but I can't recommend it to anyone but the most serious players.

Not for solo reading...

In the Introduction, Eddie asks and answers the question: How can you best use this book? His answer: If you don't have a regular partner, you can't; don't even try.

I would add that if you and partner are not willing to take considerable time discussing each topic, agreeing what to include or exclude in your system and practicing your bidding until you've gotten the bugs out, then don't bother either.

That is not to say that solo reading can't be helpful. I studied the book with a regular tournament partner but also play with a number of other people in club games. Each of them know different aspects of RKC and having read through the entire book I am more comfortable adjusting to individual preferences (1430 vs. 3014 vs. using both; incorporating a basic "minorwood" RKC for the minors or Exclusion Blackwood.) So for the curious, feel free to read it cover to cover, but I honestly think without a dedicated partner you can spend your time more fruitfully improving some other aspect of your bridge game.

Required reading for any partnership serious about RKCB, Kickback, or Minorwood

The fundamental methods presented in this book are required reading for any serious partnership that wants to use Roman Keycard Blackwood, Kickback, and/or Minorwood without costly misunderstandings. Very few partnerships are on solid ground when there's a queen ask, opener wants information about kings, or when responder has a void.

If someone asks you whether you play 1430 or 3014, it's a dead giveaway that they don't really understand RKCB. Kantar explains why 1430 and 3014 responses exist and how to use them both according to rules that are based on logic and not difficult to remember.

Some players dislike the book because Kantar goes into an extraordinary level of detail about specific auctions and difficult situations, in which there's a point of diminishing returns. Less serious players can skip the esoterica and choose the level of detail appropriate to their own partnerships. When making those decisions, the use of highlight pens is strongly recommended.
