Fascinated by Patagonia since an early childhood lust for Grandma's scrap of hairy Giant Sloth skin, Chatwin's also intrigued by odd miners and the log cabin built by Butch Cassidy in Cholila. In 1977 the London Observer called it "a brilliant travel book," and while Chatwin's no longer alive (he died in 1989), his book still glows. From Rio Negro to the southernmost town of Ushuaia, Chatwin depicts all in writing as spare as the Patagonian desert itself, and as vibrant as the purple clouds off Last Hope Sound.

About the Author
Bruce Chatwin (1940–1989) was the author of In Patagonia, The Viceroy of Ouidah, On the Black Hill, The Songlines, and Utz. His other books are What Am I Doing Here and Anatomy of Restlessness, posthumous anthologies of shorter works, and Far Journeys, a collection of his photographs that also includes selections from his travel notebooks.

A Vivid Imagination and a Powerfully Bracing Landscape Makes for a Superb Travelogue

Published back in 1978, Bruce Chatwin's seamless mix of fact and fiction is still among the most enthralling of travel books. Prompted by a piece of reddish animal skin he found in his grandmother's curio cabinet when he was a child, the author ignites himself on a flight of fancy about its origin. This leads him to an expansive area of wild beauty, Patagonia on South America's southernmost tip. I have been lucky enough to visit this part of the world myself about four years ago, and I can confirm from my travels that Chatwin does an amazing job of capturing not only its physical splendor but its colorful inhabitants. However, this is no linear travel narrative, as the author breaks his stories down into mini-sections, ninety-seven in total.

Several of the episodes deal with his own experiences on the road and the individuals he encounters like the gauchos on the pampas, the Welsh-originated villagers, a French soprano, and a hippie from Haight-Ashbury looking for work in the mines. Interspersed with these accounts are snippets of history, real or imagined, such as an unknown connection between Magellan's expedition and Shakespeare's "The Tempest", the whereabouts of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid after they left the states, and a 19th-century European lawyer who convinced the local Araucanian Indians to elect him their monarch. Chatwin shows particular gift for culling whimsical trivia into a greater storytelling context that is hard to resist as long as the reader is aware that little of it is verifiable. He inevitably ends the book the way he started - by finding the source of the animal scrap. Few writers have shown such a vivid imagination and a powerful sense of imagery as Chatwin has with his splendid travelogue. This will make those with an extreme case of wanderlust want to book their flights to Punta Arenas, Chile, right away.

Couldn't put it down - I even read it under my desk at work

This is a wonderful collection of tall tales, fiction, fact and bizarre anecdotes, loosely connected by their association with a sparsely populated part of South America. Unfortunately critics and publishers in their obsessive need to categorise books, called it a Travel Book. This was misleading, as are the claims that he reinvented travel writing or had some sort of unique insight into Patagonia, its people, history and landscape. Chatwin was primarily a storyteller, not a travel writer or an expert on Southern Argentina. His talent for the 5-6 page yarn is unparalleled in modern literature and this is as good as anything he wrote.

The best way to read Chatwin's fabulous memoir of Patagonian travel is aloud while driving through contemporary Argentina. Patagonia still haunts and holds great mystery in its vast expanses and contrasts. It is even a great read for those who never leave home. One has a sense that Patagonia, far from being the end of the world is its very center. All roads seem to have led there and returned.

He has been involved in�faculty development activities since 1998, through the ExCEEd Teaching Workshops of the American�Society of Civil Engineers, the Essential Teaching Seminars of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and the US National Science Foundation-sponsored SUCCEED Coalition. He has received�several awards for his work, including the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers, the Ralph Teetor Education Award from the Society of Automotive Engineers, being named�the University of Florida Teacher of the Year for 2003-04 and the ASEE Southeastern Section�Outstanding Teaching Award for 2013. Miserable read- not well written- hard to learn/follow as a student.

This book is crap. The method of self-paced discussion and group-think is like the blind leading the blind. How are a group of students who know nothing about a topic supposed to teach each other about a topic none of them knows anything about? Professorial use of the book will certainly help, and students may not have a choice as to which book their teachers use for this course, but if there is a choice, avoid this method of learning and this book that follows it.

William Skidelsky has been literary editor of the Observer (UK) and the New Statesman, as well as deputy editor of Prospect magazine. He lives in London with his wife and two children.

Spurious Account of One Man's Passion for the Great Tennis Player

Sometimes readers are often prompted to wonder why books were actually written; why agents spemt so much time and energy promoting them; and why publishers spent so much money in printing and publicizing them.

This is certainly the case with William Skidelsky's FEDERER AND ME. A one-time literary edit�r of London's OBSERVER newspaper and the NEW STATESMAN magazine, he writes about his obsession with the tennis player Roger Federer. Pages and pages of minute analysis of the tennis player's technique and appearance are intertwined with reminiscences of the occasions when the author had the chance to see Federer in action, plus fragments of autobiography dating back to the author's childhood when he first started to love the game of tennis.

Skidelsky obviously knows something about the mechanics of tennis, but for all his knowledge, he cannot capture the essence of his subject; that combination of brilliance of technique, sheer ruthlessness and lovability that has kept Federer at the top of the tennis tree for over twelve years now. Perhaps Federer just defies description; like all great sports people, you have to watch him in action to understand where true greatness lies.

As far as the autobiographical elements are concerned, Skidelsky does not write particularly interestingly. He outlines his education at Eton College and Oxford University, while embracing the particularly English trait of trying to show that privilege has not affected him; he is just as "normal" as his readers. The fact that this is patently untrue seems to elude him: from the evidence of this book, Skidelsky has had a very easy passage through school, college and work, and now operates quite happily as a member of London's journalistic �lite, making sufficient money to write pointless books like this.

On other occasions he writes about his tennis travels through Wimbledon, Wembley and Halle. Although more than willing to write about his passion for Federer, he remains sublimely indifferent to his surroundings; we get little sense of the ways in which context shapes the fans' reaction. The genteel atmosphere of Wimbledon is very different from the more intimate surroundings of Halle. It could be argued that ambiance is not really Skidelsky's main interest, but it does have a significant influence on the way Federer conducts himself both on and off the court.

In the end, we are left with a book that reveals the author's narcissism rather than explains why Federer has such an attraction for tennis buffs young and old. Avoid.

Good Overview of Pharmacy

I found this book a good review of pharmacy school. It contained information on fluid volume in a patient, enteral nutrition and TPNs, a review of pharmacy calculations and kinetics, an overview of medical procedures, and lab values. It is good for a person whom has been out of school for a short while but does not want to or is not able to find their old class notes.
