William Skidelsky has been literary editor of the Observer (UK) and the New Statesman, as well as deputy editor of Prospect magazine. He lives in London with his wife and two children.

Spurious Account of One Man's Passion for the Great Tennis Player

Sometimes readers are often prompted to wonder why books were actually written; why agents spemt so much time and energy promoting them; and why publishers spent so much money in printing and publicizing them.

This is certainly the case with William Skidelsky's FEDERER AND ME. A one-time literary edit�r of London's OBSERVER newspaper and the NEW STATESMAN magazine, he writes about his obsession with the tennis player Roger Federer. Pages and pages of minute analysis of the tennis player's technique and appearance are intertwined with reminiscences of the occasions when the author had the chance to see Federer in action, plus fragments of autobiography dating back to the author's childhood when he first started to love the game of tennis.

Skidelsky obviously knows something about the mechanics of tennis, but for all his knowledge, he cannot capture the essence of his subject; that combination of brilliance of technique, sheer ruthlessness and lovability that has kept Federer at the top of the tennis tree for over twelve years now. Perhaps Federer just defies description; like all great sports people, you have to watch him in action to understand where true greatness lies.

As far as the autobiographical elements are concerned, Skidelsky does not write particularly interestingly. He outlines his education at Eton College and Oxford University, while embracing the particularly English trait of trying to show that privilege has not affected him; he is just as "normal" as his readers. The fact that this is patently untrue seems to elude him: from the evidence of this book, Skidelsky has had a very easy passage through school, college and work, and now operates quite happily as a member of London's journalistic �lite, making sufficient money to write pointless books like this.

On other occasions he writes about his tennis travels through Wimbledon, Wembley and Halle. Although more than willing to write about his passion for Federer, he remains sublimely indifferent to his surroundings; we get little sense of the ways in which context shapes the fans' reaction. The genteel atmosphere of Wimbledon is very different from the more intimate surroundings of Halle. It could be argued that ambiance is not really Skidelsky's main interest, but it does have a significant influence on the way Federer conducts himself both on and off the court.

In the end, we are left with a book that reveals the author's narcissism rather than explains why Federer has such an attraction for tennis buffs young and old. Avoid.

Good Overview of Pharmacy

I found this book a good review of pharmacy school. It contained information on fluid volume in a patient, enteral nutrition and TPNs, a review of pharmacy calculations and kinetics, an overview of medical procedures, and lab values. It is good for a person whom has been out of school for a short while but does not want to or is not able to find their old class notes.

Mysteriously interesting

Being an ardent Agatha Christie fan, Mary Higgins Clark was recommended to me and this was the first volume of her books that I read.
There aren't any detectives like Hercules Poirot or Miss Marple still the stories keep you glued to the book till you reach the end.
'Weep no more, my lady' has a certain Christie's touch. The story is about a young woman Elizabeth. Her sister, Leila is murdered and Ted, her sister's fiance is convicted, with Elizebeth being the only witness. There are other charachters like Leila's friend the Baron and Baroness, her agent, another rival actress. The interesting thing is that each charachter has some motive for the murder. And finally the real murderer turns out to be... (You have to read the book to find out).
'Stillwatch' is about a young reporter who is making a television documentary. But what she does NOT know is that this documentary is linked to her past and will affect her present life. Not much of a mystery here but still an interesting read.
'A cry in the night' reminded me of Alfred Hitchcock's movie Psycho and hence the reason for 4 stars.
A good selection for those who have a preference for mysteries (minus politics, violence and sex).

I read all stories & enjoyed most of them. I would say, this is a 4 1/2 starrer. The only thing keeping me from giving it a 5 is that I didn't like the "Cry in the Night" so much. Had it been "Where are the Children", I would have given it a 10 star rate, if there is such a thing :-)Moreover, I like the compilation here better than the other MHC trilogy.
After reading 6 MHC stories in a row, I am becoming familiar with her style & events albeit characters taking on different forms. Nevertheless, her books are interesting & will make you lose track of time.

I just finished reading A Stranger is Watching and I loved it. If you are looking for a book with supsense then read A Stranger Is Watching. First Neil and Sharon Martin are kidnapped by the vicious criminal kidnapper known as Foxy. He traps them and sets a bomb, and it is only a matter of time before they are able to escape. Time.... If you are in the mood for a good mystery book that will leave you wondering the entire time then Read A Stranger Is Watching. I loved it and I'm sure you will to.Read it today!

A return to form from this great author

I haven't bothered with the author's Henderson's Boys series, as the excerpt of Book 1 just didn't appeal. As for the CHERUB series proper, I really enjoyed it until it moved to hardcover. I properly read the first 100 pages each of BRIGANDS M. C. and SHADOW WAVE, and then "sped-read" the rest (reading only the dialogue). These hardcover books are longer, and I was more interested in campus life than the missions.

I have trouble believing/relating to most teen characters in fiction, but Robert Muchamore's Cherubs are the ones I like most. They stuff up but own their mistakes, they think and behave age-appropriately, and they're funny. Admittedly, most books I read are American, so maybe these Brit kids are just a breath of fresh air. In speculative fiction (these teens are spies), the non-spec elements must be as realistic as possible so the spec bits don't require as much suspension of disbelief. Robert Muchamore has mastered the balance.

After the original CHERUB series comes PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC, Book 1 in this special CHERUB: Aramov Clan trilogy, with new characters as well as cameos from old favourites. Ryan Sharma travels to California, to befriend Ethan Aramov, the descendant of a Kyrgyz crime matriarch.

Meanwhile, rebellious girl Fu Ning needs to leave China fast. Escaping through Kyrgyzstan to England, Ning is captured and tortured by an Aramov Clan member, but later tests to become a CHERUB agent.

Fu Ning is an awesome teen heroine - finally, someone whose story revolves around her and not a romance/stalk. She's a boxer who becomes a stronger person mentally, and CHERUB can only improve her life.

Ryan and Ethan's story is far from over, so we have to wait until August for Book 2, GUARDIAN ANGEL. PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC is a return to form from this great author, and this Aramov Clan instalment is a real page-turner.

great for teenage boys

I have teenage boys and they LOVE the CHERUB series. They never got turned on to the Harry Potter phenomena but as action oriented guys they really glommed on to these books. I have to yell at them to stop reading once they get going on one of these. Now that's a nice problem to have! If you have having trouble getting your boys to read by all means give this series a go.

Being a Catholic

When I was in my ninth grade year we were required to read this book. Reading it helped me to understand more about my Catholic faith. It helped me threw my early teenage years and the start of a new school by presenting stories and quotes from other people. I highly reccomend that you buy/ read this book!

As a student at a Catholic school I've had to read this for my religion class. I am not a Catholic and I found that this book gave me a good understanding of the Catholic faith, hence the title of the book, but I also found that it focused a lot on developing and understanding you (me) an individual and that its purpose was not to try to convert me to the Catholic religion.

Not the best for formation of youth

First of all, this book is NOT on the recommended list of formation books that has been put out by the US Bishops even though it is widely used by many catholic schools. Even though its doctrine is sound, its approach to teaching our faith may be confusing to teens. It has a "we understand what it is like to be a teen" mentality. My teen is using it at school and is constantly uncomfortable by the insinuations in the book that a teen should be having a crisis in their faith at this age. This book presents the catholic faith as "just another suggestion."

The best thing about this slim first novel is the title, which is the name of a trendy London punk club where some of the action is set. As a character explains, "People come here to forget but can't quite, and end up remembering something else." Hyped as the British version of Bright Lights, Big City, the book is narrated by the club's nihilistic manager, Merril, who thinks of his establishment as a "living hell" and is in love with a trendoid named Lisa. When she runs off to Europe, Merril wanders the streets pining for his sweetheart. Then she returnswith an obnoxious husband. This is the kind of novel where the making of a fruit salad is described in such detail that it seems to have some great symbolic significance, but in the end is nothing more than a bowl of cut-up apples and grapes. A clever, biting writer, Bracewell has a way with a phrase ("We were, after all, the Kiwi Fruit Generation"). But his characters are singularly unappealing (in Bracewell's words, they suffer from "spiritual anorexia"), and his style is too affected to engage the reader.

Michael Bracewell's "The Crypto-Amnesia Club"

When I read this book, I think Bryan Ferry of Roxy Music may wished he wrote "The Crypto-amnesia Club." A short novel that is more of a mood piece then anything else. i m not sure if this is Michael Bracewell's first novel, but it is not as strong as his other works. Saying that it is sort of a must-read if you like his work, and I generally love his novels.

Obsession with one woman in sort of a twilight London that flickers in and out of one's consciousness. And yes, Mid-period Roxy Music should be the soundtrack to this book.
