From Publishers Weekly
Listen up, women, here's how to fathom your man. First, "men are much simpler than women," so in trying to figure him out, "think like a minimalist." Remember, "Sex is spelled s-e-x, not i-o-u." For guys, "relationships are not . . . top priority." Work probably ranks higher. When criticizing a man, "develop a light touch." In bed, let him know you think he's a red-hot lover. From such platitudes, this breezy, often superficial pabulum is distilled. Berkowitz, who hosts a talk show on Financial News Network (and was formerly the Today show's correspondent on men), teamed here with freelance journalist Gittines, offers advice to women on getting men to open up, dating divorced men, extramarital affairs, gauging a man's true intentions regarding commitment, dealing with his fears of impotence, and so forth. Author tour.

From Library Journal
What makes men tick? Why won't they open up? Weren't they all supposed to have gotten in touch with their feelings in the 1970s? What went wrong? According to Berkowitz, the Today Show 's correspondent on men, nothing went wrong. Men, by nature, respond differently from women, and a lot of misunderstanding could be avoided if women comprehended how men express themselves. Many recent books have explored this territory; Berkowitz maintains that men are not psychological cripples, nor women masochistic fools. Neither sex is "right" or "wrong." We're just different, and it's silly to take adversarial positions. So here is the "Boylitz" course: What he really means. No neuroses; just good sense, affection, and the occasional flash of recognition. Maybe we've finally outgrown confrontational psychobabble. Let's hope so.

few earth-shattering insights but fun to read nonetheless
By L. Rephann
With such a provocative title, you'd think this book might open the door into the secret world of Men, so all Women might from there on in understand. It's not the case. While it does offer some good reminders (men are visual, men and women are DIFFERENT, don't hint with men, etc.), some of the book feels dated and Berkowitz's tone is that of a smarmy glossy magazine writer (which he happens to be, as well as a correspondent for various daytime TV programs like Today).

The book can be read in one sitting, and since it's very light, you won't feel weighed down if you consume it all at once. Recommended, but more for fun and as a time-passer than as a real cornerstone of understanding the differences between the sexes or developing a really deep understanding of men.

Very misleading title
By A Customer
This book drags on and on and on with stories that attempt to be humourous, but just come up long-winded and pointless...On Berkowicz's chapter on Why Men are Jerks...he explains that women want men to be jerks...On his chapter regarding sex, he explains in detail how men love and will do anything to get it. Now, true many women are attracted to jerks, and men infact enjoy and love sex, but what's the big secret you're letting us in on here? I found the book to be rather boring, and hard to read.

I don't think so
By James Thomas
If you think every man thinks the same way, does the same thing, has the same desires, and is just lumped into one cateogry, then this book will show you that. Peresonally, I like women that are real, without all of the games that we men see through anyway.

Yeah, men are visual. So are women! Men like intimacy just as much as women do. The title says more than the book does.

'Light' dystopian - too light for me.
By Sarah
(Source: I own a copy of this book.)
This is the story of 15-year-old Kyle Straker, and the events that occurred to make him (in some ways) not exist.
The story is told by Kyle, and is split into 6 parts - the six sides of analogue cassette tapes that Kyle recorded his version of events onto.
Kyle's story starts at the talent show in his small village in Cambridgeshire, when something goes drastically wrong during a hypnosis act, and the four volunteers all awake to find the rest of the people of the village totally frozen. They try not to panic, and are relieved when after 1 hours everybody starts moving again. Only problem is, the people are not the same people they were before the event, and the people know that Kyle and his 3 fellow volunteers are now not the same as them.

This was an interesting idea, although the book itself seemed to be aimed at a younger teenage audience. The main character was 15, and the writing itself was fairly simple, so I'd say this was probably aimed at teens under 15.
I like dystopians, but this just didn't quite have the right dystopian feel for me. There was a bit of panic, the story was interesting, but it just wasn't of the same calibre as other dystopians I've read recently. Whether this was because it was aimed at a younger audience I don't know, maybe it was just that because nobody was trying to kill anybody, it lacked a certain element of danger and suspense. I have to say that this is probably the first dystopian I have read where there is no imminent threat of death from the `changed' masses.
The story was written as a story printed from Kyles story that he has recorded onto old cassette tapes. This was slightly annoying in that at the end of each cassette part of the story is lost where `the tape ran out', and there are also little boxes of information relating to certain things that Kyle says, and certain people's opinion of what Kyle means at times, which seemed to be trying to be witted, but didn't succeed.
I also had a couple of issues with the storyline - if the `changed' or 1.0 people took away all the electrical devices, how does Kyle use a cassette recorder? Why don't the 1.0 people try to get rid of the 0.4 people instead of simply ignoring them? And mainly - seeing as this is written as if it has happened in the past, and the intended audience is supposed to be 1.0 people, why are these 1.0 people not more like us? It just doesn't quite sit right that in actuality we are much more like the 0.4's than the 1.0's, another quirk that just falls a bit flat for me.
Overall; a `light' dystopian, obviously aimed at a younger teen audience.
6.5 out of 10.

Hooked from Page One
By Lincs Reader
Set in the future where life and humankind as we know it has changed drastically. A set of cassette tapes with the recording of a diary have been found and are the basis of the story. The diary belongs to Kyle Straker, a teenage boy who lived in the early 21st century. The diaries have been reproduced in book format, which in itself is very unusual in this future world, as nobody actually reads any more, and throughout the diary the unknown editor adds his own explanatory notes to the text. These notes add a touch of humour, and also a touch of cynicism.

Kyle Straker was an average teenager, living in small village, hanging out with his mates, listening to music and fancying the local girls. It's the day of the annual village talent show and Kyle and three others volunteer to be hypnotised as part of one of the acts. This is where life becomes very very strange, when the four volunteers wake up, the rest of the village are standing stock still and are silent. The phones are dead, the internet is cut off. When the other villagers wake up and start to go about their business, Kyle and the other three soon realise that something catastrophic has happened - and they have been left behind.
To say any more would give too much away, but be assured that what follows is an intelligent and fast-paced story, sometimes very scary and often very insightful. I was totally and utterly transfixed by the story and the writing, the characters and the premise.

sci fi for young and old...
By Liz Barnsley
It's a brave new world. `My name is Kyle Straker. And I don't exist anymore.' So begins the story of Kyle Straker, recorded on to old audio tapes. You might think these tapes are a hoax. But perhaps they contain the history of a past world...If what the tapes say are true, it means that everything we think we know is a lie. And if everything we know is a lie does that mean that we are, too?

So, firstly I'd love to tell you why this book is clever, but that would spoil it. But keep that in mind. Its clever.

Secondly this is a complete story. It works well as a complete story. You only really need this one tale. BUT there is a sequel - 1.4 - and I for one am extremely pleased about that. Because its clever. And I'm thinking it might get even more so...we'll see. Fairly soon I imagine.

I very much enjoyed reading this, following Kyle's story as he gets caught up in extraordinary events with a strangely ordinary feel to them. This works brilliantly - its kind of matter of fact. Kyle has a story to tell and has found a way to tell it. And you will be right there. The next time you see something out of the corner of your eye you may wonder what it is that you saw...

I'm being vague. I know it. So how about this - do you like John Wyndham? If you do, you may appreciate 0.4. Now I'm sure that Mr Lancaster will not mind one bit if I say he's not up (yet) to the standards of Mr Wyndham's writing but while I was reading this I was nostalgic for those days when I emerged wide eyed from such novels as Chocky and The Midwich Cuckoo's, wondering if such things were possible. For today's generation of young readers this could fill a gap...and as an adult you will certainly appreciate the humerous asides about such things as the Teletubbies. This book is kind of like one of those movies you see with your children where its aimed at the younger audience and yet there is plenty there to appease the adult sensibilities.

All in all a great little read - and whilst I hope for more from this world I am equally intrigued with what other strange and wonderful imaginings the author may have in store for us.

Happy Reading Folks!

Heading South, Looking North: A Bilingual Journey, by Ariel Dorfman

In this remarkable memoir, Dorfman describes an extraordinary life, torn between the United States, South America, and his Jewish heritage, between English and Spanish, between revolution and repression. Interwoven with the story of how Dorfman switched languages and countries--not once, but three times--is a day-to-day account of his multiple escapes from death during Pinochet's military takeover of Chile in 1973. Combining eight vignettes of his life before 1973 with eight scenes from the coup, Dorfman filters these events through an engaging, hybrid consciousness.A beautifully written and deeply moving auto-biography by one of the "greatest living Latin American writers" (Newsweek), Heading South, Looking North is at once a vivid account of a life as complex and mysterious as the fictional characters Dorfman has created, and an enthralling search for a permanent home, a political cause, and a cultural identity.

Amazon.com Review
Ariel Dorfman is no stranger to exile. Before his 30th birthday, he had fled with his parents (Jews who had escaped from Eastern Europe) from Argentina to the U.S. and then later to Chile. Then, following a military coup, he fled Chile for a stint in Europe before returning to the U.S. For Dorfman, this was not traveling but enduring, as his forced movement between nations, cultures, and languages left him without a place to call home or a culture he could completely define as his own. Although heralded as one of Latin America's leading writers, he once renounced the Spanish language and swore to become an American in both speech and culture. Later, while a student at Berkeley, he abandoned English with the same vengeance and returned to his native Spanish. Such vacillation caused him to ponder the role of language in forming identity, and this theme runs throughout Heading South, Looking North: A Bilingual Journey. His desire to embrace his Latin roots went beyond language, however, for it was politics that ultimately thrust him into the role of a writer, thus changing his life. He had wanted to be a part of the American protest movement, but he feared the official wrath that could befall him due to his immigrant status: "This seemed to be my fate. In Chile, I had been Argentinean; here, I was Chilean; always the danger of deportation, my foreign passport weighing down on me. So I looked on while heads were broken, sit-ins were disrupted, and damsels in distress were dragged off by the 'pigs.' ... My participation was always surreptitious and oblique...." But in Chile his involvement took a more active stance. His status as official citizen emboldened him and he enthusiastically embraced Salvador Allende's socialist movement, serving for a time as the administration's communications and media advisor; a choice that eventually earned him yet another round of exile back in the U.S. (where he continues to reside) after the death of Allende and the rise of General Augusto Pinochet. A remarkable story of perseverance and the inherent power of language, Heading South, Looking North is ultimately a quest for self-identity. The fact that he wrote this book in English may answer the question of where he stands--for now. --Shawn Carkonen

From Publishers Weekly
The details of this artfully constructed memoir by a Chilean novelist probably best known in this country for his play Death and the Maiden are dramatic, but what makes the book remarkable is its continuing meditation on language and its role in forging identity. When Dorfman was born in Argentina in 1942, his Jewish parents, who had fled Russia, named him Vladimiro in honor of Lenin. In 1945, they moved to New York City, where their son (who adopted the name Edward) refused to speak Spanish and became a believer in popular American culture, even rooting for his father's enemy, Peron, because as long as Juan and Evita remained in power, the Dorfmans would never return to Buenos Aires. In 1955, under pressure from Sen. Joseph McCarthy, Dorfman's father left his job at the U.N. and took his family to Chile, where "Edward" attended an English school. After college, he went north again in 1968 to study at Berkeley and returned to Chile in 1970 to be part of Salvador Allende's socialist government. Three years later, Allende was dead, the country was in the midst of a military putsch and Dorfman was fleeing for his life, back to North America. In alternating chapters, the author relates what happened when Allende was overthrown and the story of his own life and how it was shaped by the language he was speaking. Dorfman at times seems more concerned with writing a "literary" work than with telling a story, but as the book goes on, the self-conscious flourishes diminish and the result is an astonishing portrait of the shaping of a life.

From Library Journal
Chilean expatriate Dorfman, who now teaches at Duke University, is perhaps best known in this country as the author of the play Death and the Maiden. He is a prolific writer of international stature who moves freely among forms producing novels, plays, essays, poems, and, now, an extraordinary memoir of his extraordinary life. His work is structured in chapters that alternate between "the discovery of death" and "the discovery of life and language." The first thread takes place in Chile in the fall of 1973 with the coup against Salvador Allende, when Dorfman says he himself should have died but did not. The second thread follows Dorfman's life chronologically up until that point. Though jolting at first, the effect of this dual structure is to create in the reader the jarring sense of the discontinuities in Dorfman's tale of multiple exiles, switches in languages and cultures, and the relentless forces of history on the life of one individual. Mixed feelings
By ZZR-RR
This is the kind of book I thought I'd enjoy. A memoir by Ariel Dorfman, the novelist, the exile, living now with his family in Durham, North Carolina, where he holds the Walter Hines Page chair at Duke University. To a certain extent I did like it, but the author comes over as a smarmy busy-bee who pokes his nose into everything and inevitably gets himself into trouble. He sounds like a nave adolescent, full of himself, pathetic despite his experiences and accomplishments. He is an idealist, a quirky character, a good writer, no doubt an eccentric.
What is most incredible is that the man now lives in the USA despite all his criticism of the country's influence on the Third World in such books as How to Read Donald Duck. A bonus point for the USA for letting him stay, I'd say. This is not to say that Dorfman is incorrect in his assumptions though, rather it begs the question of why did he choose to live in the US? No doubt, it is where he is most likely to draw attention to himself, have his books published, and hold a secure position! In that he's not much different to the rest of us at heart, only differing insofar as his writing and exile is concerned.
Heading South, Looking North is an account of Dorfman's early years in the US, his life in Chile, his involvement during the Allende years, his struggle with language, namely American English and Latin American Spanish, and finally his exile from Chile where this book ends.
The chapters alternate between his early years and the Allende years, before he brings it all together in the closing chapter. The writing is often in the present tense and meanders and grinds on and on, thereby it is easy to lose a grasp of what's being said. Nonetheless, I quite liked the style, though much of the time I couldn't see what the fuss of whether to use Spanish or English was about. Well, so it's difficult to be fluent and think and write in both languages. This is a writer's dilemma, his agony so to speak, but it's no big deal. That is unless you want to make it one, and Dorfman does. Whatever, he seems to succeed in his efforts to write in both languages.
I feel he uses that theme here as an overburdened vehicle to the Allende years and his involvement in the revolution. A guy like this is bound to be involved in some sort of revolution or other. And in this book his supposed squeaky clean honesty reminds me of modern day politicians, who I do not trust. I'd be watching my back if Dorfman was around for sure, he protests too much and I feel there is definitely something he is not saying although he is supposed to be saying it all.
I look forward to reading a novel by him though.

One of greatest literary and political disappointments
By An Mhuruch
Ariel Dorfman's Death and the Maiden helped me learn some new Spanish words, soak in Chile, Chilito, pisco sour... it also helped me imagine with more concreteness the hell that foreign policy and the Pinochet dictatorship unleashed upon Chilean men and women. I learned pieces of the dialogues by heart and wondered about the implications of human frailty and resistance in general. Alas, I took the work to be an expression of criticism toward the weak-willed husband who was content with a foul compromise, with the so-called "dialogue". This memoir as well as Dorfman's pieces in Counterpunch opened my eyes, however. Dorfman has never advanced past the boy who forsook Spanish for English, the boy so awed by glories of Holywood that he'd rather be a whimsical, charming Ariel than a weird Vladimiro. It is hilarious that he is being criticized for Communist sympathies here, when he is a liberal in the nineteenth c. sense of the term who would fight and die for nothing but his piece of the northamerican pie. I wish I had never read any of his work, and I cannot forgive him his cowardice, his duplicity, his heading AND looking north. I'll stick to Galeano instead.

Pivotal moments
By Amazon Customer
This book is the internal memoirs of a man whose defining moments were exile from his homelands and his languages. Exile was a longstanding way of life in Dorfman's family, from his grandparents who had to leave Eastern Europe, to his parents who had to flee both Argentina and the US, and now Dorfman himself, who was forced into asylum after the fall of Allende in Chile. But exile is more of a secondary or co-theme of this book. The other major theme is Dorfman's search for identity through his languages. Throughout the book, Dorfman describes how he came to know language, and the identity traits that go along with a language. He also describes how he came to choose which of his two languages, English and Spanish, to use in different contexts and to consciously construct different identities.
Rather than tell his story chronologically, Dorfman works from a repertoire of pivotal moments. He has asked himself, when and why did I first start using English? When did I begin to write? When did I embrace the philosophy of non-violence? He then describes these episodes in detail, and speculates and philosophizes on them. The story of Dorfman's political activities in Chile and what happened to him during the coup constitute about half of the book, with these political chapters alternating with chapters about the other significant events in his life. The bouncing back-and-forth between time periods moves almost smoothly, like the thought patterns of an insomniac reflecting back at the end of a busy day.
I found many aspects of this book quite interesting. The first-person account of bilingualism, and its ties to a conflicted identity were described very clearly. The inside perspective on the Allende regime and its fall was also informative. What was particularly telling was the speculation on why the regime lost popularity amongst the Chilean people- -how Dorfman himself shamed people who were celebrating the Allende victory with a right-wing singer who was trying to mend fences, and told them the singer was not welcome in the revolution, or how he didn't reach out to a neighbor whose job was jeopardized and then lost because he wasn't an Allendista. Another aspect of this story that I found intriguing was Dorfman's identity as a gringo English speaker brought to Chile against his will as a young teenager, who came to adopt the country and become active in its politics. I couldn't help but think of another young man, Michael Townley, who was also brought by his American family to Santiago in his teenage years, and also learned the language, married a local girl, and wanted to call Chile his permanent home. But Townley was on the other side of the revolution, and became a right-wing terrorist working for the Chilean intelligence forces. Did Dorfman ever encounter Townley? Of course, Dorfman wasn't actually American- -he was an Argentinean who spent a significant portion of his childhood in the US, but he looked and spoke the part. How many other young Americans adopted Chile during this period? What was their combined influence on Chilean politics?

Could have been better!
By Superdale55
The book is fine but the CD could have been much better with a slight change. Every couple of pages you have a cd #1, 2, 3, and so forth throughout the book. However, the CD has #1 only as a point to start from but contains 1-92. I use a laptop to play the CD, so each time I have to start back with #1 and play through to 69 or where ever I last started. If you have a CD player this would not be a problem as you can fast forward but still would have to spend time searching through the short plays which are about 20 seconds each, however you might want to review something at some point.

title is a bit misleading
By Brandyglaz
It has too many cultural lessons for language lessons. I suppose it could work as a travel supplement for those wanting to learn about Russia and speak a little Russian but if your goal is to learn the language, this Is not it. For me it is a supplement to my other courses. The cd offers native speaking audio for pronunciation. I do like the cd portion. I don't want to download more stuff, having to get a bigger and bigger drive or worse have a drive crash and then all that info is gone. I have enough stuff on my computer/drives. This is a temp study so why do I want this stored taking up valuable space? I DON'T. Those of us with older cars with cd players can use the cd in the car (especially in traffic) without having to spend more money buying adapters. I love my truck. I am not giving it up for ever-changing technology's sake. I don't have to clog up my computer with info that will be temporary. I can play it in my stereo, nice and loud while potting around the house. Plus, I am more likely to see and then use the cd. Downloaded I can get distracted with other crap downloaded or worse, go online and instead of studying, I'm surfing the net.

On that note, for all those who think CDs are no longer in use, you really need to pay better attention and see what is really going on. People are finding that downloading everything has its limits. I'm not chucking 500 CDs of music! Some of that stuff is hard to find! Anyway, back to the book. It is okay. Could be better for actually learning just the language or maybe I just misunderstood the purpose of the book? Think of it as a cultural guide with language learning.

Makes learning Russian a Pleasure
By Whowrotewhat
I adopted a Russian family and had to buy quite a few books to teach myself the language. This was by far the best available. Especially notable is Julia's clarity in explaining the case system, which is the most difficult aspect of the Russian language to grasp. Most other books should be judged based on how they articulate the case system. If there is only one book to buy to study the Russian language, this is the one.

Finally! A true voice in SA romance
By V Delport
I've read The Unwanted Wife and can honestly say that this book is better. The writer is more confidant, her style is sure and most importantly her wit comes fast and sharp. Regardless of the emotional tension this is a happier, more believable book than The Unwanted Wife. I loved the uncompromising, quirky heroine and the way that she is true to herself shows character complexity rarely seen in Romance fiction. In a genre often spoilt by stereotypes Natasha Anders has created a voice uniquely her own.
I'm sensing some interesting potential with Chase in a future book??

Loved it.
By Reviewer101
Natasha Anders has quickly become one of my favorite authors... She is very consistent with delivering very good books with very likable characters... This was a simple story... a friends to lovers type, but there was a lot of emotion, and I really got involved in the couple's lives... I can't say anything bad about this book.... Can't wait for her next book...

Loved the heroine--hero, not so much
By JJH
3 1/2-4 stars. I have read the other two books from this author, and this one has a much different feeling to it. While I enjoyed all three, the first two had more of a heavy, angsty tone, while this one was lighter, and even funny in parts. I also thought we get much better character development in this one. I really liked the heroine Bobbi. She was fun, smart, and a little sassy. Gabe was a good alpha lead, and had kind of OCD tendencies towards order and neatness--a huge contradiction to Bobbi, but there were a couple of instances where he disappointed me. True to this author, the H messes up, and groveling begins. While I thought it was great Bobbi stood her ground, and made Gabe work for it, I felt the climax of this section fell flat for me when, during the confrontation, Gabe sort of turned the tables, and made him seem to be the victim in all their problems, since she did not want to change. To me, he acted like a whiney child, which I admit stayed true to his character (but it still annoyed me). If Bobbi acted this way, she would be considered a snobbish biatch. For me, the grovel kind of took a nosedive, and the couple just seemed to work things out after that. There is also an incident in the end where Gabe let's Bobbi down so he can "work stuff out". Once again, I felt, true to his character, he acted like a selfish child. His reasoning just didn't fly with me. I thought the story as a whole was well written. The dialogue was entertaining, timeline flowed well, sexy scenes were spicy. I also enjoyed catching up on characters from the previous books. I loved the epilogue. When it was over, I did enjoy it, but I sort of expected more.

My Personal Review for "My Own Story"
By Nancy Houser
I was lucky to have found the story, "Pavarotti: My Own Story" by Luciano Pavarotti himself. In an empty world since his passing, his booming personality and wonderful character fills this book with not only who the man was as a young child, but how gifted he was and how success never changed the inner man.

He loved his fans, his listeners, and until he died--he sang for them. Very seldom without a following of friends and co-singers surrounding him, he was a generous and kind individual, which echoes in every page of his book.

This is the book to read, if you truly want to understand Luciano himself. Other books are out there, but with other opinions, stories, hate-filled sarcasm, or untruths. We all have our opinion, but what better way to understand who he really was--than from his own lips.

This is a man who was loved passionately by the entire world, and honoring him by purchasing the book will not only benefit you but his memory.

Understanding His Amazing Persona
By Groovin' guy
The whole world mourned over Luciano Pavarotti's death. It wasn't until then I read his book.

Though not a true autobiography in that many chapters are recollections and thoughts written by the tenor's friends and colleagues, really adds more depth into the the life of Mr. Pavarotti. It is extremly interesting to read the collections of some of his closest friends including his wife Adua and childhood friend and soprano Mirella Freni, among many others.

It covers his frustrating, early struggle with La Scala who initially wanted him only as an understudy.

Capturing many aspects of Pavarotti's life including his passion for painting and food, This is a delightful testimony of this very remarkable personality.

I recommend this strongly to his fans, to opera fans and even to people who like biographies.

We miss him
By Cambridge Bill
I wish I would have read it sooner because after Pavarotti's passing, we can only miss him more. This book develops Pavarotti's passion through his words.
If one has wondered how this man with such a powerful voice, went from a small town in Italy to capture world opera, this is the read.
His concerts brought opera, pop music, and even classical vocals to a new level of public acceptance. His natural business sense and love for his followers are laid out chapter by chapter.
Read it while listening to one of his CDs and you will be carried away.

Do you play to win? Or do you play not to lose?

As Tory Higgins and Heidi Grant Halvorson have discovered in their work at Columbia University’s Motivation Science Center, everything we do is motivated either by a desire to be better off or to simply hang on to what we’ve got. And understanding the simple but crucial difference between the two can empower you to motivate yourself and influence everyone around you. Examining how promotion/prevention focus applies across a wide range of situations—from selling products to managing employees to raising children to getting a second date—Halvorson and Higgins show us how to identify, change, and use focus to get the results we want.

Fascinating Psychology of Influence and Success
By Book Fanatic
This book is made of two parts. Part I is called Promotion and Prevention. Part II is called Motivational Fit. Part I takes up two-thirds of the book and is really good. This book is not about focus in the sense of concentration, instead it's about a mindset that is broken into Promotion which is big picture and positive, and Prevention which is about being safe and negative. I really liked this first part and I think this is a fascinating and important idea in psychology. You learn the significant differences between the two mindsets and the very different ways they react and respond. This is very important to your own success and to the ability to influence others.

Part II is about motivational fit and this is where the booked bogged down for me. It was interesting at first but it was just too complicated and involved and ultimately I got bored reading it. It's all about how to influence others.

I give Part I 5 stars and Part II 3 stars and thus end up with a 4 star overall rating. I recommend this book and think it will be useful to those who want to understand more about human behavior. Since this book doesn't have any preview options I supply the table of contents below so you can get an idea about the topics covered in the book.

Part I: Promotion and Prevention

Chapter 1: Focused on the win, or Avoiding the Loss?
Chapter 2: Why Optimism Doesn't Work for (Defensive) Pessimists
Chapter 3: Focus on Work
Chapter 4: Focus on Kids
Chapter 5: Focus on Love
Chapter 6: Focus on Making Decisions
Chapter 7: Focus on Our World
Chapter 8: Identifying and Changing Focus

Part II: Motivational Fit

Chapter 9: It's the Fit That Counts
Chapter 10: The Triumph of the Fittest
Chapter 11: Under the Influence
Chapter 12: To Market
Chapter 13: A Step-by-Step Guide to Creating Motivational Fit

Worthwhile theory, but it needs applied research
By GskFn
More than a decade ago, I latched onto a miniature, seedling version of Focus in a volume of academic research called Well-Being: Foundations of Hedonic Psychology (1999). Then, in short form, the authors Higgins and Grant Halvorson described research showing benefits to be gained from identifying people with a promotion focus versus prevention focus. I've been glad to have this as a thinking tool in my kit ever since.

More recently, Halvorson's Succeed: How We Can Reach Our Goals (2011) talked about a wide span of motivational research. As part of that, she gave a thumbnail sketch of promotional and preventative orientations. I thought her sketch there was more complicated, but still promising.

So when Focus came out in 2013, I was excited to learn more about the elaboration of this theory. I also hoped to learn more about its application in business or personal life, backed up by empirical research.

Instead the short form -- the 1999 book chapter -- may hold more value for me in some ways. I come away from the 2013 book, Focus, with more skepticism than I went in with. I am not persuaded that the elaborations in Focus are sufficiently grounded empirically nor user-friendly enough to warrant the wider uses that the authors claim.

Here, below, is how Focus defines promotional and preventative orientations:

"Promotion motivation is, at its core, about satisfying our need for nurturance. It's about filling your life with positives: love and admiration, but also accomplishment, advancement, and growth. Promotion goals are ones that we would ideally like to achieve (as in, `Ideally, I'd like to be more muscular' and `Ideally, I'd like to be in a relationship'). When we do obtain whatever positive thing we've been seeking, we feel the high-energy, cheerfulness-related emotions: happiness, joy, and excitement. Or, as Ray might put it, we feel `totally stoked.'

"Prevention motivation, on the other hand, is about satisfying our need for security. It's about doing what's necessary to maintain a satisfactory life: keeping safe, doing what's right. Prevention goals are ones that we feel we ought to achieve-- ones we think of as duties, obligations, or responsibilities (as in, `I really need to lose some fat' and `I should be in a relationship'). When we do successfully maintain safety and security, we feel the low-energy, quiescence-related emotions: calm, relaxation, and relief. (They may be low energy, but that doesn't mean they don't feel good-- ask any harried working mother trying to fulfill her multiple duties what she'd like most, and the number one answer is usually `to have a chance to relax.')" (p. 5)

Note that this is not quite the same as optimism and pessimism. Nor is it meant to align neatly with economists' notions of carrots and sticks (though I would wish to see the authors delineate these comparisons with ordinary cultural notions of "folk psychology" more closely).

In 14 years gone by since my first encounter with this theory, my overall problem with Focus the book is that the research seems to have remained largely conceptual, not rigorously studied in application. People researching this theory don't seem to have studied how, and how much, people can influence situations or their own appraisals by shifting the cognitive frame. Also, there is too little attention to who and when people take a promotional versus preventative orientation. And the book gives way too little attention to *how* a person is supposed to be able to *assess* oneself and others, reliably, either as a point of personality or a situational factor or both. In place of applied research, the authors rely a lot on intuition and philosophizing without really making clear that's what they're doing.

I think this is an attractive theory that holds out a lot of promise for applied research. If better fleshed out, it could be quite powerful. Meanwhile it may offer loose guidance for day-to-day use intuitively. But in my view, it is not yet ready to be varnished with the gloss of psychological science. As the book stands now, I would call it a lengthy and complicated introduction to a really good-sounding concept that needs more work.

Are you a "prevention-based" thinker?
By MisterPlow
Because if you are, be prepared: this author does not care for you and won't hesitate to drive that point home with example after example. It makes it difficult to, well, focus on the message. The first part of the book had me feeling so lousy about myself I thought about the old children's song about giving up on people and going to eat worms.

I did pick up some validation for things I already knew, like how I'm motivated more by the threat of losing something than the possibility of gaining something new. But honestly, I knew that from using stickk. com's website (the one where you put your money on the line if you don't fulfill your promises).

I see from the reviews that business people who have employees gain a lot from this read, and I can understand that. That's probably where the book really shines. I'm just a person who wanted to light a fire under myself to achieve some personal goals, and I like other sources better for that, like Shawn Achor's work on happiness or Roger Elliott's Self Discipline audio download at Uncommon Knowledge (which I don't find hypnotic, like you're supposed to, but I do find very motivating.)
