Economic Geography: The Integration of Regions and Nations, by Pierre-Philippe Combes

Economic Geography is the most complete, up-to-date textbook available on the important new field of spatial economics. This book fills a gap by providing advanced undergraduate and graduate students with the latest research and methodologies in an accessible and comprehensive way. It is an indispensable reference for researchers in economic geography, regional and urban economics, international trade, and applied econometrics, and can serve as a resource for economists in government.

Economic Geography presents advances in economic theory that explain why, despite the increasing mobility of commodities, ideas, and people, the diffusion of economic activity is very unequal and remains agglomerated in a limited number of spatial entities. The book complements theoretical analysis with detailed discussions of the empirics of the economics of agglomeration, offering a mix of theoretical and empirical research that gives a unique perspective on spatial disparities. It reveals how location continues to matter for trade and economic development, yet how economic integration is transforming the global economy into an economic space in which activities are performed within large metropolitan areas exchanging goods, skills, and information. Economic Geography examines the future implications of this evolution in the spatial economy and relates them to other major social and economic trends.

  • Provides a complete introduction to economic geography
  • Explains the latest theory and methodologies
  • Covers the empirics of agglomeration, from spatial concentration measurement to structural estimations of economic geography models
  • Includes history and background of the field
  • Serves as a textbook for students and a resource for professionals

Review
"Economic Geography: The Integration of Regions and Nations is an outstanding contribution to the field. . . . Even those most familiar with the economic geography literature will emerge from reading the book challenged, engaged, and enlightened."--Donald R. Davis, Journal of International Economics

"The book delivers important insights into the theories and practices of economic geography and opens opportunities for new avenues of research, by providing extensions of the existing theoretical models which can form the basis of new applications and tests to these theories. . . . [T]his book is highly recommended for both academic and graduates."--Vtor Braga, Economic Geography Research Group

"[T]he book by Combes et al. gives an excellent overview of identification, estimation, omitted variables, reverse causality, sorting and evaluation issues related to geographical economics modeling outcomes as well as urban economics and interaction modeling outcomes. Empirical researchers will appreciate the overviews given here."--Frank Van Oort, Regional Studies

From the Back Cover

"Combes, Mayer, and Thisse have just given me an indispensable teaching tool and a great text for my students. Their book offers the most up-to-date, balanced, comprehensive treatment of both theoretical and empirical research."--Kiminori Matsuyama, Northwestern University

"In the field of geographical economics, this is exactly the kind of book that I have been waiting for. After presenting lucid and comprehensive coverage of the current state of theory, it provides the modern methodology for measuring spatial concentration and inequalities. Then it confronts the challenging task of comparing theory with facts. This book will serve as an ideal textbook for graduate students and scholars in economic geography, regional development, international trade, and public policy."--Masahisa Fujita, RIETI, Japan

"Economic geography has undergone something of a revolution in the last fifteen years with the application of formal theoretical modeling and econometric estimation to old questions. The many advances have, however, left us with a literature that is discursive, disparate, and disjointed. This book does an exceptional job of adding the needed structure, and helps all of us move toward a more complete and integrated understanding of this still-evolving area."--James R. Markusen, University of Colorado at Boulder

"Combes, Mayer, and Thisse have put together a marvelous book on economic geography. With clear, lucid writing, they present the theory and empirics of economic geography in a way that will provide insights to both those new to the field and those in search of an excellent reference work."--David Weinstein, Columbia University

"Combes, Mayer, and Thisse have produced the rare text that is of value to both theorists and empirical researchers. They present the current state of knowledge about economic geography in an accessible way, paying equal attention to formal models and applied work. Their framework provides an elegant synthesis of concepts in regional economics, international trade, and economic development, which will be of broad interest to scholars and policymakers alike."--Gordon Hanson, University of California, San Diego

"A welcome addition to the literature. The authors are well-known researchers in the subject both on the theoretical and empirical sides. They put heavy emphasis on recent empirical research, not only reviewing the literature but also teaching the methodologies commonly used. No existing textbook in economic geography does this. This book fills a real gap."--Philippe Martin, coauthor of Economic Geography and Public Policy

"This book is well-written, extremely clear, and very well-focused. Other books are either too advanced for anyone starting in the field or too basic to be of any use beyond basic undergraduate courses. Beyond teaching, this book should also be very useful as a reference."--Gilles Duranton, University of Toronto

The Perricone Prescription: A Physician's 28-Day Program for Total Body and Face Rejuvenation, by Nicholas, M.D. Perricone

Most people believe that sags, bags, and wrinkles –– on the face and body –– are inevitable. many people choose to temporarily circumvent these signs of aging with surgery, chemical peels, Botox injections, or laser treatments. The good news, according to research scientist and practicing dermatologist Nicholas Perricone, M.D., is that by following a simple program of diet, exercise, and skin care you can prevent and even reverse many signs of aging.

The Perricone Prescription clearly and succinctly explains the rock–solid laboratory research behind Dr. Perricone's revolutionary theories, revealing that inflammation at the cellular level, precipitated by poor nutrition, pollution, sunlight, irritating skin–care treatments, and stress, is the single most powerful cause of the signs of aging. Dr. Perricone gives you the knowledge and the tools to fight that inflammation from the inside out, while at the same time decreasing the likelihood of heart disease, cancer, diabetes, arthritis, and a host of other degenerative diseases.

Amazon.com Review
Healthy, vibrant skin depends more on what you put in your cheeks than what you rub on them, says dermatologist Nicholas Perricone. In The Perricone Prescription, fresh salmon tops the list of must-eat foods for total body rejuvenation. In fact, it is the star of Perricone's "Three-Day Nutritional Face-Lift," a convincing trial run for those who are a bit hedgy about committing to his 28-day diet and his supplement, skin care, and exercise regimen.

Perricone's clear explanation about the adverse effects of inflammatory foods persuasively argues for shunning destructive, low-fat favorites (including watermelon, carrots, and bagels) and "culinary horrors" like pizza, pasta, and beef. Better to eat anti-inflammatory choices (those with a glycemic index of 50 or less) like salmon, halibut, and trout. While the book's mega list of recommended supplements is a bit hard to swallow (literally and figuratively), the supportive information Perricone supplies about each is certainly helpful.

Another detailed grocery list--this time for topical anti-inflammatories--addresses skin care, and his wrinkle-free fitness plan promotes flexibility, muscle strength, and endurance. Finally, a handful of savory recipes offers respite to those who only know how to broil. So, despite all the salmon (and the angry kids whose parents have purged their high-glycemic kitchens), Perricone's prescription doesn't sound fishy at all. --Liane Emory Thomas

From Publishers Weekly
Perricone (The Wrinkle Cure), a professor of dermatology at Yale Medical School, believes that relatively simple changes in eating can effect dramatic changes in physical appearance and well-being. He has created a month-long program broken up into daily menus as well as a more restrictive three-day regimen designed to produce immediate results. Perricone's guiding principle, which he explains in some depth, is to reduce inflammation at the cellular level, which, he believes, causes the skin to age and is also linked to degenerative disease. Perricone suggests that protein and some fat is essential for everyone. He is particularly keen on the benefits of fish. Certain foods high in carbohydrates cereals, breads, bananas are taboo in this plan because of their high glycemic index; they cause a spike in blood sugar and prompt the body's insulin response, which stores rather than burns fat and causes inflammation. Perricone also recommends an exercise regimen, and nearly a third of the book is devoted to a discussion of antioxidants, vitamin supplements and creams. Some may question his nutritional theories, and others may find the diet difficult to stick to, with its almost total restriction of starchy foods. Still, Perricone is a proponent of Barry Sears's The Zone, and readers who have followed that book and Perricone's own bestselling earlier volume will probably appreciate this one.

This book can change your life forwver!
By Trumpeter
I bought this book for a friend, but I have been following this life style for about ten years. I am now a quadriplegic and still remain healthy and progressing constantly. My skin is in great condition, as well as my overall energy, stamina and well-being. I am 61 years old, but don't look it or feel it. I highly recommend this book and suggest you buy used. So far I have bought three and all three are like new.

Science-based diet that really changes your appearance
By Amazon Customer
I caught The Perricone Prescription video one afternoon on a public television station. After 5 minutes, I had grabbed a pen and was scribbling furiously. All of the skin, energy level and body issues he was describing were me! I ran out to the local supplement shop and bought some of the supplements he recommended and started taking them. I saw an almost immediate dramatic improvement in my skin, memory and energy levels just based upon a few notes on supplements from the program. I put the book on my wish list and FINALLY got it a year later.

The book and diet is based upon the premise that by stripping inflammatory 'toxins' from the diet and by beefing up the body with oils and substances that help it create healthy chemicals for the brain, skin and body, your skin and body undergo a 'makeover'. Although the whole makeover bit is appealing to many, in my opinion, it's simply your body 'getting healthy'.

The book is fantastic. If you're into having a healthier lifestyle and you want to know the ins and outs of why you should do certain things, this book is for you.

The ONLY down side is that the diet isn't as 'accessible' to those who aren't fully dedicated or able to throw themselves behind a diet like this. It takes more prep time than an ordinary meal in a busy household and there are a variety of ingredients.

That said, it isn't a reflection on the book. The book is well written with instructions and complete information on every topic it covers - including recipes. Even gleaning what I could reasonably use from this book has made a ton of difference in my life. I have a disorder that benefits from stripping inflammatory substances from my body and this diet did the trick. I very highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a 'change your body, change your life' type book.

First impression- Good.!!!
By Dan
I work as an Hospitalist and I was craving(not an exaggeration)for a good book which could address important issues in core clinical conditions routinely seen by a hospitalist. I havent read the whole book but I have gone through some important chapters and Well, my first impressions are they have done a fairly good job. Though its not a comprehensive text book as such it touches upon important clinical issues and management points especially for the hospitalists. Its a good begining and I hope they carry this forward.

great resource
By travelndoc
Bought the Kindle version and love it for the most part. It's full of in-depth and up-to-date information to guide patient management from the perspective of a hospitalist. Extremely useful coverage of hospital medicine core competencies.

My only issue is that much of the information in the tabular format doesn't translate well into the Kindle - at least not the version I have. The writing is either too small to read or one table has been dissected oddly into a few parts which often defeats the purpose of being able to review information in a table.

It's great to be portable but wish I had the hard copy of the textbook, too.

Best book I have seen this far in hospitalist medicine
By Sasan
Im a third year IM resident planning to go in hospital medicine after graduation. Lots of topics which are crucial for a hospitalist are not usually covered in traditional internal medicine text books. This book covers them all. It addresses the non-medical aspects of hospital medicine pretty well.
The approaches to presentations are presented from a hospitalist stand point which is different from the traditional internist approach.
Quite evidence based. Presents the results of important trials in tables.
The level of depth and detail is tailored for hospital medicine and impatient encounters. So you may need to go back to Harrison's to get indepth detail about certain topics.
Overall I think this is a wonderful book. A bit expensive but definitely worth it.
