Magical, Imaginative, Adorable! :)

This is the tenth Peter Pauper Press "Rescue Kit" I've purchased from Amazon. I have bought them for myself and as gifts for others. The little kits are whimsical and fun.
The plush animal is very tiny. Some people have written reviews for other kits in which they have expressed disappointment at the diminutive size of the toy. If you know what to expect before purchasing, then I think most anyone would be charmed by these little kits that are big on imagination and whimsy. :)
The unicorn in this kit is approximately six inches tall. She's very cute with sparkly hoofs and horn and snow-white fur and fluffy little mane and tail.
The tiny booklet that accompanies this magical little foundling is adorable with simple and sweet illustrations and delightful information about caring for your adopted baby unicorn. Also included are naming suggestions, a checklist of possible magical abilities, and a page to enter your pertinent adoption details to make it all official. :)
Obviously, this kit is perfect for an imaginative child, but it will also charm any grown-up who still harbors a childlike sense of fun and fantasy. :)
After purchasing myself one of the Bigfoot Rescue Kits, my tiny baby Bigfoot was promptly stolen by a grown male friend who keeps it on the dash of his car! :) I gave one of the Dragon Rescue Kits to my employer as a little Christmas gag gift, and she loved it! I gave a Yeti Rescue Kit to each of my grown sons, as a sentimental reminder of all the holiday seasons we watched Rudolph befriend the Abominable Snowman on TV. :) These kits are cute and fun. :)
In my opinion, the Unicorn Rescue Kit has one of the most adorable and enchanting books of all the kits. But maybe I just feel that way because I love unicorns! :)
A great go-along gift with this kit would be a very small crystal prism. (Read the booklet, and you'll see why.) ;)

Cute plushy with a fun 'background'

We originally purchased on of these as a gift for our 6 year old niece. But it was our 10 year old niece who fell in love with it. She was vey gracious about her gift (an adult style coloring book/journal) but we could tell she really loved the unicorn.

So we bought this for her for our next visit. And she loved it. She loved the little story and the adoption certificate almost as much as the plushy itself, I think.

Nice but much smaller than thought

Purchased by my daughter for a friend. She thought it was hilarious since friend really loves unicorn. It was much smaller than thought But that added to the humor even more. My daughter friend did like it but not sure she thought it was as funny as my family.
The box is only about ~4"

Somewhat interesting

Some of the book was pretty good. I did not enjoy some of the older stories that were told as much as the ones everyone has heard about (Manson, Son of Sam, and Night Stalker). I would give the book three stars and I might reread it again. It was worth the time to read. The thing I did like about the book was all the different killers talked about. Some were people that I have never heard of before. It was a cheap book on Kindle so I really can't complain to much. The price was about right for the book. On the other hand I did find some of the older stories boring. I would have liked to have seen more current people in the book.

Tom Pirnot received his bachelor's degree in music from Wilkes College and his PhD in mathematics from The Pennsylvania State University. Bit of a disappointment

This is only the third book by author/artist Gengoroh Tagame I know of that was legally translated from Japanese into English and put in hardcopy for the Canadian-American market. Tagame's visual style combines the tamer yaoi with hardcore depictions of graphic M2M (usually S&M) sex, along with influences from Japanese woodcut and American-style action comics. The story (actually four in series) concerns a runaway sex slave and is not as interesting as I had hoped. I've read a good deal of Tagame's work (usually, for lack of anything better, in pirated online editions called "scanlation"), and in his best, the sex scenes highlight the character development of the submissives, much like a good musical's songs will further the plot. Physically, GUNJI is a quality volume by German publisher Bruno Gm�nder, printed in Italy on good thick page stock, but now there is better legal stuff out there. Assuming you do not find gay S&M offensive, a much better buy is THE PASSION OF GENGOROH TAGAME, which includes numerous stories with different characters, in a book format 100 pages longer, at about the same price.

Keep 'em coming

Gunji contains two of Gengoroh Tagame's stories from the early 2000s, the title work in 4 chapters, and The Ballad of �eyama, a single chapter one-shot heavily reworked for this edition. Like Endless Game, released late last year, this high quality paperback features fold-out covers with a selection of exquisitely rendered color artworks from the artist, and includes extensive background information and commentary on the stories.

The story of Gunji is a dark and violent tale of obsession and misguided revenge, a sick sort of love played out Tagame-style: explicitly detailed sexual domination, pain and humiliation. The characters' sad desperation and lack of communication make for harsh reading, yet the compelling story has its tender moments too.

The Ballad of �eyama, riffing on an ancient Japanese legend, is a bittersweet meditation on persecution, prejudice, and hearts/minds opened by new experiences. Again, with beautifully drawn, explicit sex scenes. Tagame explains in the notes that he updated the artwork in this story so extensively, he was tempted to add "Redux, 2013" to the title.

Overall, Bruno Gm�nder Verlag's edition is a treat and I sincerely hope they bring us more of Tagame's works in english. I'm sure I'm not alone in wishing that the multi-volume "Kimi yo Shiru ya Minami no Goku" or "Shirogane no Hana," for example, were available in english. My only complaint with their releases so far is the handling of sfx. English text is superimposed on existing sfx, semi-obscuring the artfully rendered japanese characters with mostly meaningless literal english translations. The work deserves a more respectful and less distracting treatment of sfx.

THIS IS PURE ART!!!

IT WAS COMICS THAT GAVE ME MY FIRST EXPERIENCE OF HOMO-EROTICISM BACK IN THE 70S. If I would have had this stuff (or something similar) available to me in my early teens, I would have come out of the closet sooner and career-wise probably gone directly into professional comics.

Stanton Wortham is Judy and Howard Berkowitz Professor at Penn GSE. He has written on classroom discourse and the linguistic anthropology of education, interactional positioning in media discourse and autobiographical narrative, and Mexican immigrant communities in the New Latino Diaspora.

Angela Reyes is Associate Professor of English (Linguistics) at Hunter College and Doctoral Faculty in Anthropology at The Graduate Center, CUNY. She has written on language and racialization, Asian American youth, and ideologies of mixed race/language in the Philippines.

I have an appreciation for any person who is imaginative and can write, but if you're going to pursue this and publish a story for sale Please, please, please spell check your work. There were so many spelling errors that I lost interest in the story. I found myself skipping pages because the spelling errors annoyed me and even with the skipping ahead the story dragged a bit for me.

Poems for Night People.

This is the type of poetry that I look for. Dark and gritty. About bones and blood and the terror of one's own mind. I think a lot of people give up when they realize most poetry is about love and walks in the woods. But there's poetry like this too. Poetry that talks about alternative lifestyles and mental illness and just not being able to get out of bed.

The glamorous world of big-city geisha is familiar to many readers, but little has been written of the life of hardship and pain led by the hot-springs-resort geisha. Sayo Masuda has written the first full-length autobiography of a former hot-springs-resort geisha. Masuda was sent to work as a nursemaid at the age of six and then was sold to a geisha house at the age of twelve. In keeping with tradition, she first worked as a servant while training in the arts of dance, song, shamisen, and drum. In 1940, aged sixteen, she made her debut as a geisha.

Autobiography of a Geisha chronicles the harsh life in the geisha house from which Masuda and her "sisters" worked. They were routinely expected to engage in sex for payment, and Masuda's memoir contains a grim account of a geisha's slow death from untreated venereal disease. Upon completion of their indenture, geisha could be left with no means of making a living. Marriage sometimes meant rescue, but the best that most geisha could hope for was to become a man's mistress.

Masuda also tells of her life after leaving the geisha house, painting a vivid panorama of the grinding poverty of the rural poor in wartime Japan. As she eked out an existence on the margins of Japanese society, earning money in odd jobs and hard labor―even falling in with Korean gangsters―Masuda experienced first hand the anguish and the fortitude of prostitutes, gangster mistresses, black-market traders, and abandoned mothers struggling to survive in postwar Japan.

Happiness was always short-lived for Masuda, but she remained compassionate and did what she could to help others; indeed, in sharing her story, she hoped that others might not suffer as she had. Although barely able to write, her years of training in the arts of entertaining made her an accomplished storyteller, and Autobiography of a Geisha is as remarkable for its wit and humor as for its unromanticized candor. It is the superbly told tale of a woman whom fortune never favored yet never defeated.

Sayo Masuda’s Autobiography of a Geisha offers a story of unremitting hardship faced by a hot-springs geisha, a virtual indentured sex-slave in pre-World War II Japan.

Born in 1925, Masuda began work as a nursemaid at age 5 and suffered a childhood of emotional and material poverty. She was then sold to the Takenoya geisha house in Upper Suwa at age 12. While her food and clothing were provided for by Takenoya, she was subject to constant verbal abuse as an apprentice. At one point, she was heaved down the stairs by her "Mother" (the name she uses for the proprietor of the geisha house) and nearly lost a leg. During her recovery, she attempted suicide and further injured herself.

Eventually, Masuda mastered the art of seduction as a geisha. The middle portion of the narrative is taken up with stories of her successful campaign for a danna (patron), of her brother’s tragic suicide, and of her star-crossed love affair with a Japanese politician.

Autobiography of a Geisha, translated for the first time into English by G. G. Rowley, was published in Japan in 1957 and has been in print in Japan steadily ever since. The tale is rendered in a simple English prose to reflect Masuda’s own, untrained style (she did not have schooling and she only learned to write hiragana script later in life). Masuda's account of being a geisha in rural Japan at a hot springs resort is at once intriguing and heartbreaking. There is nothing idyllic in her description of geisha training or life between the world wars. Born in 1925, Masuda was sent to work for a wealthy landowner when she was five. At 12, she was sold to a geisha house for about 30 yen, the price of a bag of rice. During those years, Masuda writes, "I wasn't even able to wonder why I didn't have any parents or why I should be the only one who was tormented. If you ask me what I did know then, it was only that hunger was painful and human beings were terrifying." Originally published in Japan in 1957, where it is still in print, this book grew out of an article that Masuda, who didn't learn to read and write until she was in her 20s, submitted for a contest in Housewife's Companion magazine. Her picaresque adventures as a geisha, then mistress, factory worker, gang moll and caretaker for her young brother offer an impassioned plea for valuing children. "Never give birth to children thoughtlessly!" she writes. "That is why, stroke by faltering stroke, I've written all this down."

The geisha profession has been romanticized in literature, but Masuda exposes the underside of the geisha lifestyle. Masuda was sold to a geisha house in the hot-spring resort town of Suwa, far from the teahouses of Kyoto. Though she is educated at the geisha house, the housemother there is demanding and cruel. When Masuda interferes to help her friend Karuta, the only geisha who befriends her, the housemother throws her down the stairs for her troubles. Most of the other geishas are no kinder to her--they call her "low" because they believe her to be stupid. Her virginity is sold to a man known as Cockeye, who is three times her age. Cockeye eventually buys her contract from the geisha house, but when Masuda finds herself in love with a dashing soldier, she risks being banished from Cockeye's house to a life of even more uncertainty. Originally written in 1957 and now translated into English for the first time by Rowley, Masuda's memoir is a must-read for those interested in the lives of geishas. Kristine Huntley

I loved it.

An amazing autobiography, especially after reading several other books about geisha. If you've read Memoirs of a Geisha, this might be a shocking read for you. The story of this woman made me cry and laugh--I could hardly believe it was real. I wondered (just a little) if Arthur Golden had also spoken to the author as well as Mineko Iwasaki before writing his Memoirs. Ms Masuda writes her heartbreaking story in a personal way that I couldn't help feel her presence. I really loved this book.

A "Mini-Autobiography"

Anyone who has read "Geisha, A Life" by Mineko Iwasaki probably knows how few autobiographies of Geisha exist in the world. Where Iwasaki's autobiography was that of a high-class geisha heavily invested in her art and also an atotori (one who will inherit the okiya after her mother), this autobiography is a stark contrast.

Sayo Masuda was an illegitimate child sold into the Hot-spring Geisha business like a slave. Hot Spring Geisha are different than their city-geisha counterparts in that sexual relations are an expectation. Masuda was disliked by many people right from the beginning and her journey to find acceptance and meaning in the world she was thrust into was full of hardship and heartbreak.

Overall, I would recommend Mineko Iwasaki's autobiography over this one if a person has an interest in learning about the day-to-day aspects about becoming a Geisha. This book was more of a broad scope of Masuda's life which included being an actually Geisha for only a part of the rather short memoir. As I said, however, it is an interesting and sad contrast to the life lead by the Geisha like Iwasaki. I do recommend this book as another perspective on the world of Geisha.

Autobiography of a Geisha...

I stumbled upon this autobiography after finishing "The Blond Geisha" by Jina Bacarr. After finishing that work of fiction, I decided to get a non-fictional, true-life book on the life of a Geisha. Sayo Masuda's story didn't disappoint. What we are treated to is a person, who, in effect, was treated as a non-person. To come from such a background as she was, "sold" to a family, to be treated not much better than dirt, to be taunted, teased and abused, would wreck anyone's mind. Clearly, Ms. Masuda was "damaged goods." How she survived to become a Geisha, is beyond me.

Overall, I must say that I found Ms. Masuda's story a good read. Considering that this woman's educational level was no more than that of an early Elementary School child makes her story even more remarkable. She did what she felt she had to do to survive!

Dog-eat-dog comes to mind in the world of the Geisha. Behind all the smiles, instrument playing and dancing, it's a competition. After all, these Geisha were earning their keep. It struck me that while she was plying her trade, the emotion love had never, ever entered her mind, until she ended up taking care of her little brother, who tragically took his own life when he became turbucular (apparently, their Dad died of the same disease). Her brother's death really took a terrible toll.

Autobiography of a Geisha is a good, compelling, novel. Read this and get a glimpse of a real Geisha's world! Congratulations to G. G. Rowley for such an expert translation of this work into English for all of us to experience!

My rating for this book: 5 stars! (4 stars for the story, 1 extra star for the translation!)

Few can talk with more personal authority about the range of human beliefs than Michael Shermer. At various times in the past, Shermer has believed in fundamentalist Christianity, alien abductions, Ayn Rand, megavitamin therapy, and deep-tissue massage. Now he believes in skepticism, and his motto is "Cognite tute--think for yourself." This updated edition of Why People Believe Weird Things covers Holocaust denial and creationism in considerable detail, and has chapters on abductions, Satanism, Afrocentrism, near-death experiences, Randian positivism, and psychics. Fortunately, it is also readable, interesting, and well indexed and provides an extensive bibliography. The author discusses such topics of current interest as alien abduction, near-death experiences, psychics, recovered memories, and denial of the Holocaust. Never patronizing to his opponents, Shermer explains why people may truly believe that they were held by aliens (he had a similar experience himself) or have recovered a memory of childhood satanic-ritual abuse. He clearly explains, often with pictures, tables, or graphs, the fallacy of such beliefs in terms of scientific reasoning. While teens may find the first section of the book about "Science and Skepticism" a bit too philosophical and ponderous, the rest of it will surely captivate them. A GOOD READ BUT NOT THE BEST OF ITS GENRE

A Good Book aith a lot of interesting details on creationists, cult and UFO believers and generally anyone that never learned how to think critically.
There is in my opinion some interesting tidbits that you normally do not run into in this kind of book --- the section on the disease of holocaust denial and Ayn Rand believers (certainly not a disease, but a little disturbing nonetheless) are of particular note.
Shermer concentrates on the fallacies and crooked thinking inherent in the things that do not make the simple test of being empirical or subject to change given new data (the most basic requirements for any logical and scientific view of the world).
Richard Dawkins does a far better job of debunking creationism. Sagan, the man who predicated his whole life on the study of the possibility of extraterrestial life, does a better job in disclaiming any assummed probability that we have any shred of evidence through the ages for any rational belief in UFOs of massive world conspiracy theories.
The organisation of the book is also a little haphazard. In that sense it can still be highly entertaining by reading a chapter at a time and then returning to it from time to time.
All in all a very good effort and one that should be lauded when everywhere the forces of irrationalism and intolerance are on the rise.

Everyone needs to read this book

If I had to make a list of the top 5 books that everyone should read, this would deffinatly be on there! Shermer does an awesome job at explaining what exactly the point of science is, how it works and what it takes for something to be real science. In a country that is so scientifically advanced, I am amazed at how many people believe such weird things. This book is jam packed with information and is presented in a conversation like style which makes it interesting to read. Shermer doesn't just explain why certain things are wrong, but why exactly people believe them. Overall, this is a great book, and anyone that wants rational explanations for anything that seems a little out there (ESP, creationism, alien abductions, ect) should definitely read this book. Stop reading this... go get it... NOW! :)

This is probably my favorite book on Theater style and one of my most precious posessions. Russell shows and discusses the relationship of period style, artistic choices and historical mind sets of all the art forms from architecture to music, from styles of clothing to history and discusses how they connect. He gives you a sweeping yet specific understanding of every age, then brings that understanding into the theater of the day.

I am appalled that this book seems to be out of print. If you find it in a used book store and it is under $50, buy it!
