Amazing collection from an amazing company

This is a huge two-volume slipcased set. It's quite heavy so if you're buying from Amazon, there might be an additional weight surcharge depending on the shipping location and speed. For overseas buyers, I recommend checking out the book at Book Depository because their prices are inclusive of shipping and the overall price may be slightly cheaper.

The slipcase is gorgeous and stunning. It holds two hardcovers within, namely Weta Workshop: Celebrating 20 Years of Creativity and Weta Digital: 20 Years of Imagination on Screen, for a total of 464 pages. Weta today is made up of Weta Workshop and Weta Digital, and hence the books are split as such.

The books detail the history of Weta and all the work they have done for over two decades in chronological order. It's filled with insightful writeup that's bound to delight movie fans, especially those who like reading behind-the-scenes materials.

There are many little bits of interesting information, like where their name Weta came from, the puppets they made for theatre, props for advertising, the sleep-deprived nights spent traveling from sets to sets. Those were the early days for Weta Workshop. They were already quite good and then came the big break that is The Lord of The Rings that made them even more prominent as a special effects company.

Other then films, they have also created a lot of non-film related projects, such as TV programs like Hercules: The Legendary Journeys and Xena: Warrior Princess, shows for children, high-end collectibles, published artbooks and even put up public sculptures. All those are in the books, complete with commentary talking about their other ventures and challenges.

The pictures included comprise behind-the-scenes photos, graphics on how they create digital effects, film stills and more. You'll see photos of armour, weapons, miniatures, creatures and prosthetic make up. There are also pictures looking at how they do motion capture, editing, blending live backgrounds with computer graphics, rotoscoping, compositing and many more. It's an insightful look at film production from the perspective of Weta.

You'll read about stuff like how they manage battle scenes in LOTR, create skin textures for the Na'vis in Avatar, use digi-doubles in films such as the digital Captain America that jumped out of the jet in Avengers, and many more. All the films that they have worked on are given a decent amount of writeup. It's very satisfying to read through all the information.

Authors Luke Hawker and Clare Burgess have both worked at Weta Workshop and Digital respectively for more than a decade. They have done a terrific job with the books.

The Art of Film Magic: 20 Years of Weta is an wonderful collection of stories and images from a very well respected high calibre company in the movie industry.

This is one of my favourite books from 2014.

Highly recommended to movie fans, digital artists and those who love movie companion books.

Fantastic Archive of Movie Magic

[[VIDEOID:efc8f04e2f2301f3fc59409d23a3ee57]]Weta has done so much amazing work over the years, and this book is a celebration of the company's history and it's contribution to the movies. This book is actually two volumes - one for Weta Digital (computer effects and animation) and one for Weta Workshop (practical effects, models, props, etc).

I tend to find the Weta Workshop book a bit more exciting, because everything is actually made - whether it is Iron Man's suit, Wikus' gun in "District 9", or thousands of different swords for films like "The Hobbit" and "The Last Samurai". They do a lot of great work on various creature features, specializing in animatronics and prosthetics. The designs are so great and fan enthusiasm is so high that Weta has actually been able to produce various prop replicas, which are sold on their website and often sell out.

But equally impressive (and perhaps more complex) are the innovations that Weta Digital is making on the virtual side of things. In particular, their pioneering of performance capture with movies like "Lord of the Rings", "The Adventures of Tintin", and "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" is nothing short of a game-changer in filmmaking. This company has brought to life almost every one of the most impressive CGI characters you can think of - whether it is King Kong, Gollum, or Smaug the dragon. The company has pushed the effects industry forward in a number of ways -- digital lighting and light scattering; tissues and textures; improvements in the stereo (3D) pipeline; etc.

These books are absolutely worth owning. The text is rich with detail and insightful information. One of my favorite things is that scattered throughout the book are quotes and experiences from a bunch of different people - it's great to hear about the films directly from the artists/craftsmen who work on them. Emphasis is placed on the fact that Weta constantly goes into uncharted territory and each production has various challenges that had to be overcome in order for the project to be successful. The Weta Workshop book has a foreword by Peter Jackson and an introduction by Richard Taylor. The Weta Digital book has an intro by Joe Letteri.

But of course, the most important aspect of these books are the imagery. For Weta Workshop: behind the scenes at the workshop, building sets, prop molds, actors in the makeup chair, models and miniatures, etc. For Weta Digital: on set w/ green screen, the mo-cap stage, visual effects progressions, digital models, etc. Images are abundant and range from very small to nearly full-page; most of them are very high-resolution and clear (though there are some behind the scenes photos that are not as sharp, but it's worth a look anyway). Finally, at the end of both books is a timeline/filmography, where you can see the totality of the company's work thus far.

If there is one thing I'd like to see more of, it's concept art. These books tend to feature the finished product more than anything else, but I am also interested in seeing first concepts (even if they were unused) from early in the process. While the books have plenty of imagery and photographs, it is a bit spare on concept artwork. Fortunately, there are separately available art books available for movies like The Hobbit, District 9, and others (most of which do feature a lot of concept art).

If you are a fan of Weta, creative filmmaking, or just movies in general, then this book is worthy of your time (especially if you are curious about the process). The price tag is higher than I usually pay for movie art books; but as a collector I can say this is easily one of the nicest books on my shelf.

Perfect for Film Fans

It is a beautiful book and well worth it as a film fan. The books give a great overview of Weta and Weta Digital's growth as a company and it is exciting to see their progression through the years. Be aware that as the book covers such a wide span of time and projects you get more of a surface view of then a really in depth detailed account of every step of the process. However it is still filled with great anecdotes and facts that make it enjoyable to peruse.

My Go-To guide for ALL my juice fasts

This book is GOLDEN! So ya its old, but it was written in the 1970's! Duh! But honestly, even though some of the facts may be outdated, the underlying information he explains and provides still stands true today! I mean, it's freaking brilliant! For about 4 years I had been yo-yo-ing with my weight and diet. I did everything! I mean diet pills, worked out 7 days a week, did the 60 day INSANITY challenge, no carb diet, all protein diet, you name it! And all I got out of those was either I became too masculine (grew wider as opposed to slimmer) or I lost not more than 5-6 pounds...in 2 YEARS!

Then September of last year I started hearing about juice fasting and its benefits. A friend recommended this author and I immediately bought the book. I have since done about 5 fasts since last September. I lost about 13 - 16 pounds and my energy was through the roof! (the fasts were small, from 5 days to 13 days) I had hunger cravings the first time I did it for the first two days but those went away quick. A tall glass of green juice will keep you satisfied for about 3hrs. It's amazing. And I totally like his take on doing colonics and enemas. It takes out the toxins we are stirring up! Brilliant! I think that's one of the most important parts in this book.

Lastly, I love how he mentally prepares you for the fast. It's not just a physical journey you're undertaking, but a mental one as well. If you're mind is in it and you are POSITIVE through the experience knowing you're going to feel better in the end you will reap remarkable results! I have since gained some weight because I had a lot going on. I am now ready to get back on it.
The quickest and safest way to lose weight you ask? JUICE FASTING WITH THIS BOOK! Thanks Dr. Airola, for writing this book.

PS: I have turned everyone I know to this book. I've loaned it out so much it's falling apart. No more! They're gonna have to buy their own copy!

Juice Fasting

This is a great and helpful book that Dr. Paavo Airola has written...I tried the 3 day juice fasting and lost 4 lbs. The book contains quite a bit of helpful information in regards to one trying to live a more healthy via lifestyle and diet. Lot's of resources are listed in the book by the author that he's written and resources by other authors as well. He's listed several medical conditions in this book and gives a listings of vegetables/fruits that one can include into their diet to help manage or stabilize the condition to a more better level, examples: Diabetes, asthma, high blood pressure, arthritis, overweight, psoriasis, irregular heartbeat, chronic bronchitis,chronic headaches, etc. He explains that juice fasting is superior to water fasting. Dr. Paavo Airola has written a total of 14 books altogether. I've invested in his book titled "The Airola Diet And Cookbook" which has 300 recipes, I'm looking forward to reading it and checking out the recipes listing contents!

I first bought this book 30 years ago. I love the whole idea of eating and living in a sustainable way. I love juicing and I love the way my body feels and the way my skin looks when I juice. Some of the book is out of date, but the core knowledge is there. I go on juice fasts every so often and this book just fuels my excitement with healthy eating. An excellent and simple read!

Wayne Stinnett is a best selling American novelist and a Veteran of the Marine Corps. Between those careers, he’s worked as a deckhand, commercial fisherman, dive master, taxi driver, construction manager, and long-haul truck driver. He lives on Lady's Island, in the South Carolina Low Country, with his wife and youngest daughter. They have three grown children, five grand children, three dogs and a whole flock of parakeets. He grew up in Melbourne, Florida and has also lived in the Florida Keys, the Bahamas, and Cozumel, Mexico.

I enjoyed the book but....

I love the series but this book felt different. It seemed rushed and the story line never seemed to tie together . It was way too short and lacked the details I've come to expect. I'm hoping the stress of starting the Merciless Charity series,along with relocating to another state was the cause of this short story advertised as a novel. I'm a big fan and will be looking forward to the next Jesse McDermott adventure. I hope the author will slow down and get back to what got him where he is now. Could have been another 5 star.

Fallen Tide: The beginning of the end...

I have read all of Stinnette's Jessis Mcdermitt series and we paid for a book and got a short story this time. He wrote Pescador out of the future books, which I think is a serious mistake, and Jessie bought a mini gun I suppose for one of his boats or plane. What's next ? Is Jessie going to buy a surface to air missile and he kills off Kim, Rusty or Deuce. He needs to get back to basics with a small dose of reality or he is going to start losing readers. Wayne we deserve better than this book (short story)

Trite is a good description....

First of this writer's novels for me, and last. Full of cliches, no characterization, not much plot development, stilted conversation. Not much of a book. It read like a barely fleshed outline. If you eliminated all the names of guns, equipment, military titles and equipment, half the book would be gone. The half that was left lacked anything to sink one's teeth into. A big disappointment, even given my already low expectations of the genre.

The Million Dollar Problem

Everyone knows that computers are getting more powerful and better at doing almost anything. Finding you the fastest route cross country is easy. Translating a page of prose from one language to another is harder, but it's getting better all the time. Finding the shortest route that will get you to all of five different cities, no problem; finding the provably shortest route that will get you to all of a thousand cities - that's a toughie. It's so hard that perhaps no computer, no matter how big or how fast, can ever do it. Perhaps. Are there tasks beyond computing? It is a deep question bridging mathematics and computer science, and it is the subject of _The Golden Ticket: P, NP, and the Search for the Impossible_ (Princeton University Press) by Lance Fortnow. The question is so hard, and so important, that it is one of the seven Millennium Problems for which the Clay Mathematics Institute will give you one million dollars when you prove it. (Programming genius Donald Knuth will also give you a turkey.) This is deeper mathematical territory than most of us will ever penetrate, but Fortnow, a professor of computer science, keeps the explanations light, knowing that those of us reading this sort of book aren't really in the running for the prize, but at the same time showing how important the answer to the question might be for the future of computing.

It is best to call it the P/NP problem; the abbreviation P comes from "polynomial;" and in giving us the second, Fortnow jokes, "NP (which stands for `nondeterministic polynomial time,' if you really need to know)." He does not get much deeper into polynomials, but P is the group of problems we know computers can solve quickly. NP is a possibly separate group of problems that cannot be solved quickly by any computer program we have now, but if P = NP, then a powerful computer could solve those NP problems as easily as computers are currently solving the P ones. One of the important parts of Fortnow's book is that he shows that the P/NP problem is not something just of interest to mathematicians and computer scientists. It is a critical question in fields as diverse as biology, economics, medicine, and physics. No one has been able to come up with an efficient algorithm that solves any NP problem, which seems to indicate there is no such thing, and that P is not equal to NP. It would be a real surprise if P = NP, but right now there is no proof either way. There are plenty of people working on it. Some of them are the same sort of people who are sure they have proved the classic (and unprovable) problem of trisecting an angle. One computer journal has ruled that it will accept such P/NP proofs from any one author no more often than every two years, because most such attempts are "unreadable or clearly wrong." Fortnow encourages readers to try proving P/NP, "for you cannot truly understand the difficulty of a problem without attempting to solve it," and while his book does not give formal definitions of P/NP that would be the basis for your proof, it has website citations that could start you off. But on the other hand: "Suppose you have actually found a solution to the P versus NP problem," he writes. "How do you get your $1 million check from the Clay Mathematics Institute? Slow down. You almost surely don't have a proof. Realize why your proof doesn't work, and you will have obtained enlightenment."

Not only are you unlikely to get a proof, Fortnow is pessimistic that any mathematician is going to be coming up with one anytime soon. He knows the state of current research on the problem, and says that there is no known line of attack currently being pursued that could lead to a successful proof. Things seem to be at a standstill. He reminds us that it took 357 years to get a proof of Fermat's Last Theorem. While we may continue to butt our heads up against NP problems with merely approximate answers, and while P will increasingly seem not to equal NP, there may be no proof out there ever. Fortnow's book does a fine job of showing why the tantalizing question is an important one, with implications far beyond just computer science.

FINALLY a Really Up to Date Survey of the Biggest Problem in Science

What an awesome book! P-NP is essentially the question of whether we can find solutions quickly if we can define or know there is a solution quickly-- in layman's terms, it means we know, and then can solve, the traveling salesman problem in "P" -- polynomial -- rather than exponential or infinite time, or not at all. (MAHDI emailed and corrected this by saying: "The second sentence is wrong. P-NP is whether we can find solutions nearly as efficiently as we can verify them. The statement that we can find solutions if we can know there is a solution is a known fact and an easy exercise to prove").

There are a lot of technical books on the topic, but this is the first recent book that explores the golden ticket (finding the ONE in your batch of many that will allow you into Willy Wonka's factory tour) in layman's terms, but without talking down to the reader, and covering and focusing on all the aspects of the question. "How not to prove that P does not equal NP" as the author says, is an example of the complex and convoluted logic that's needed to explore the field of computational complexity.

Most authors, including this one, use public key crytography, factoring, etc. as examples of the "good" things about intractable problems, yet they also point out that if you could solve this problem, all the other millenium prize problems would likely also fall before you! That's more than $5 million US, so this book is definitely worth a careful read! (Ok, little tongue in cheek). The current "go to" text on the topic, from 2010, is Goldreich's P, NP, and NP-Completeness: The Basics of Computational Complexity -- which takes a kind of "text" approach, with problems, exercises, etc., and is a lot more technically oriented (interpret: dry) than Fortnow.

Contents include: The Golden Ticket, The Beautiful World, P and NP, The Hardest Problems in NP, The Prehistory of P vs. NP, Dealing with Hardness, Proving P does not equal NP (which this author believes), Secrets, Quantum, and The Future.

This book is truly FUN and READABLE-- Fortnow peppers every page with anecdotes, examples, side stories, cartoons, diagrams, and an amazing array of connections. Past explorations couldn't even have asked if it's possible to scan for the largest Facebook friends lists, because Facebook didn't exist during most of the past P/NP books frames!

If you want a more general intro to computational complexity, Neil Johnson's little triple reprint from 07 to 2012 is outstanding: Simply Complexity: A Clear Guide to Complexity Theory, and is under 10 bucks. For an exploration of how P/NP fits with the other current millenial problems, an outstanding new book is Ian Stewart's Visions of Infinity: The Great Mathematical Problems. To go a level higher, and see how computational complexity fits more generally in Systems Science and systems thinking, Flood's 2010 book is a gem: Dealing with Complexity: An Introduction to the Theory and Application of Systems Science (Language of Science).

NONE of these, however, are as gentle an introduction, with as complete and detailed coverage, as Fortnow. This is a must have if you have any interest in the biggest and toughest and perhaps most important problem of our age. The icing on the cake is the really fun read of a really dry topic!

Popularizing P vs NP for the laymen

A rare popular science book about the P vs NP problem. The author takes care in using concrete examples and simplifying explanations as much as possible, though I think at times he makes it too simple. I especially liked that he included the history of how the problem developed on both sides of the iron curtain during the cold war. This book may be a nice read for people who don't have much of a science or math background, but for those who do I don't think they will get enough out of it compared with just reading some wikipedia articles.

About the Author
Tom L�ger and Riley MacLeod have been writing together and fostering space for transgender artists for over 10 years. Their plays have been seen at HERE Arts Center, WOW Cafe Theater, Clemente Soto Velez Cultural Center, and included 9 sold-out episodes of their serial comedy Butch McCloud: Your Friendly Neighborhood Lesbian Superhero which delighted audiences in New York for more than a year. L�ger and MacLeod wrote the screenplay for the celebrated short film F. Scott Fitzgerald Slept Here (2007, dir. Jules Rosskam) which EMRO noted was "surprisingly blunt and humorous" and also "quite amazing". The two also co-produced STAGES, the first international transgender theater festival, in New York City in 2003. THE COLLECTION is their first book project.

High quality writing, long overdue anthology

The Collection does something that hasn't really been done before: an anthology of literary short stories with transgender main characters. The quality of writing is really high for any anthology, and there is a good mix of men, women, and non-binary people featured. There are also lots of gay/lesbian/bisexual/queer trans characters included. Overall this collection is not only incredibly necessary, given the lack of trans representation in literature, it also very well written and balanced. I look forward to more from these editors and Topside Press. Full review is at The Lesbrary.

Hitman's Love of a Lifetime #BADBOYZRULE

OH WOW! Jack Steele is just WOW! He is one man I wouldnt want to mess with and he is sooooo alpha and dangerous. When his woman is taken- at first he didnt realize she was his, he just knew that his mentor Dixon was gone forever and his daughter, Hazel Bradshaw , had been taken away as revenge against him. He cared deeply for Dixon and he saw Hazel as his friend but something suddenly switched on inside him. There is this great POV that was seen in this book from Jack--told in a way that I truly enjoyed. Jack was going to get Hazel back and take revenge on the men who took her from him. He holds Hazel in this haze of memory from their time when they grew up together as kids , then the memories slowly change to when they are adults... the passion and the beat of the story is fantastic.

Hazel is one strong woman to endure what she did. She loves Jack completely- her POV is wonderful. Reading Jack's and then Reading Hazel's POV is so interesting- its unique to see MC's POV.. She has always loved him and despaired he would ever see her as a woman...the point when he did was electric. Her horrific turn with the kidnappers until Jack got her back...wow, the author wrote a great story and kept me glued to this book.

The ending of the book when Jack got to Hazel and they were on the run and the dual POV -mind-blowing. I do not want to give any spoilers but suffice to say, it is action packed and full of passion and chemistry between them as they fight the bad guys and their own feelings while on the run. Jack refuses to give in while Hazel is begging him to not give up and to love her...full of emotions.
The ending -will Hazel give Jack a chance when he realizes what he did after pushing her away -the love is there-and will the bad guys be caught. You have to read to get this awesome story. It is FANTASTIC and sooooo good!

Oh my! Oh my! Oh my! Emilia Beaumont has certainly stepped outside the box with her latest release, Hitman's Revenge, a Forbidden Bad Boy Romance and I, for one, hope she stays out! I loved this book! I began reading Beaumont's work several years ago and was immediately impressed with her unique style and exceptional talent. I quickly became a diehard fan but this story is so far removed and totally unlike any of her previous releases, that it has surprised even me. I've never read anything like it. It's written in one of the most unusual styles I've ever read; it's truly magnificent. The narrative of the book is written in the first and third person with his and her alternating points of view but is divided into three separate and distinct parts. The first third of the book is from the male protagonist's point of view with each chapter alternating between a present first person perspective and then a past flashback as told by him in the third person. The second third of the book is from the female protagonist's point of view with each chapter alternating between a first person perspective in the present and a third person retelling of a past event. Then, the final third of the book is a first person perspective with alternating his and her chapters. It's bloody brilliant! It swept me into the past and present lives of both of the primary characters and held me completely enthralled. I fell head over heels in love with professional hitman Jack Steele and beautiful, innocent and quite often naive Hazel Bradshaw, the two primary players in this remarkable story of danger, drama, suspense, murder, loss, heartache, unconditional love and hopeful redemption. These two characters were intriguing, engaging, totally relatable and exceptionally well developed. Jack Steele was definitely not your typical hero. Jack was a cold blooded killer but he was also an extraordinary antihero that held me under his spell from the first page until the very last line of the book! I felt empathy for him as well as sympathy along with heartache for his plight in life but I never gave up hope for the possibility of his redemption. And Hazel was such a joy, as a child and an adult, always giving her love freely and unconditionally. She was brave, loyal, straight forward, honest to a fault and never played games with people's emotions. And even the bad guys were given their proper due as we learned some of their history and motivations. The dialogue was captivating, realistic and well executed. The entire book was masterfully written and exceptionally well crafted with professional formatting and a beautiful cover. What did I love about this book? Everything! Would I recommend this book? You bet and I am but only for adult readers as it does contain several explicit sex scenes in the last third of the book. And yes, the build-up was torture but it was worth it. It had me on the edge of my seat constantly questioning, will they or won't they. Most of us automatically assume since this is a romance that the hero and heroine will do the deed but I was having serious doubts and that's the beauty of Beaumont's writing. It's so darn realistic, you begin to doubt what you think you know about the characters and the story. Most of us form an opinion of how we think the book will end long before we get to the last page but with this story, you don't have a clue. That's the beauty of all the twists and turns, to keep the readers on their toes and Beaumont makes it look effortless. I loved it! If I had any criticisms at all, it would be only one thing. The story reveals that Jack's parents were murdered when he was only six years old but we never learn why or how, just that it was a violent death leaving him an orphan. I would love to have known whether his parents were somehow also connected to a crime syndicate as was Nixon Bradshaw, the man that took him in, gave him a home and mentored him. Will I read this author again? Absolutely! Just as soon as she releases her next book!

That's a weakness he could never afford making him vulnerable in the eyes of those who want to hurt him. He had long ago abandoned any hope of experiencing love along with any expectations of having a normal life which meant one thing - he could never have his beautiful Hazel. There was only one problem with his logic - he never told Hazel. He never told her that he loved her beyond all reason and craved her touch, and never, ever told her that she could never fall in love with him. And by the time he tried, it was too late - she was already hopelessly and irrevocably in love with him.

Hazel Bradshaw had never felt more afraid or alone in her entire life. She had to witness her own father's murder and now she has been kidnapped, held prisoner and beaten. She has no idea where she is and there's only person who may be able to save her, the man she's always loved, Jack Steele. But he abandoned her ten years ago, cruelly turning his back on her and her offer of love, and still she loves him and has loved only him for two decades. There has never been anyone but him and even now at twenty-six, she has saved herself for him and consequently, she may now die without ever experiencing physical love. Still, in the recesses of her mind, the spark of love and hope is still alive but will Jack come for her? You bet he will! Are you ready to feel the wrath of Jack Steele? Oh my! Completely captivating, seriously sexy, deliciously dark and divinely entertaining! Once I began reading this book, I could not put it down! So much yearning, so much loss, so much heartbreaking angst but also, so much love. Sigh... Absolutely exquisite! Fabulous entertainment and an awesome read!

Fast-paced, sweet romance with a hot hitman

When the male character is a hitman, something switches on inside me and I'm fair game. I have to read that story! With this book, the action starts full-throttle as Jack finds out right away about his father figure, Dixon, has been brutally killed. What's worse, the girl he grew up with has been kidnapped.

One of my favourite things about this novel is the structure. It's divided into three distinctive parts. The first one is told from Jack's point of view as he follows the leads that will take him to where Hazel's been imprisoned. It's interesting to see his hard side, the killer's edge, but also the sweet memories he holds from them growing up together.

Then, Hazel's got her turn to tell her ordeal at the hands of Jack's enemy. This second part includes more memories from the past tinged with longing, tenderness but also some heated moments.

The final part is a mix of both of their points of view as they run and fight for their lives. There's action, tension, fear and blood, also plans to come out of the criminal mess alive. All the while, I was torn because Jack refuses to give in to his emotions and keeps pushing Hazel away. At least, they both have reasons to act the way they do, and their few intimate encounters were quite hot.

I think this is a good hitman story. It's lively written, it has got a very entertaining way to link every scene, a bunch of dangerous scenes and a sweet and hot romance. The ending included some very needed redemption from the dark hero's part. I liked all of it.
