Rob began his professional career as a teacher of mathematics in a government high school in Christchurch, New Zealand. Since then he has been a student (twice), a church pastor, and from 1988 he has spent most of his time researching, writing and lecturing New Testament and Greek at Avondale College of Higher Education, NSW, Australia. Among his other roles he is editor of Avondale Academic Press, chair of the Avondale Academic Board, a husband, and a father of two beautiful daughters. He has wide research interests, and has published in scholarly journals as diverse as New Testament Studies and Applied Cognitive Psychology. His book publications include: Memory, Jesus and the Synoptic Gospels; Mainstream or Marginal: The Matthean Community in Early Christianity; and The Four Faces of Jesus.

the production quality of this latest Haynes manual is the worst I've yet seen

I pre-ordered the Haynes manual for the liquid-cooled BMW twins some weeks ago. Amazon delivered it today.

I've been buying Chilton, Clymer, and Haynes manuals for decades. They bring a DIY perspective to working on one's bike, in contrast to the we-assume-you-already-know-most-of-the-issues-and-gotchas-with-each-service-task-so-we're-not-going-to-mention-them perspective that the official service manuals typically offer.

With that as the backdrop... the production quality of this latest Haynes manual is the worst I've yet seen. Small, low-resolution black and white photos. And the paper stock is that real cheap pulp stuff. Those of you familiar with the numerous Gun Digest tomes will know instantly what I'm talking about.

The most important thing, of course, is the accuracy of the information and whether it effectively leads a DIY owner to perform safe, comprehensive, and accurate service work. I haven't spent enough time with the book to really comment on that. I did look quickly at a couple of service tasks - oil change and adjusting valves - and they seem reasonably complete. And Haynes rates each service task with degree-of-difficulty, so that's a nice touch.

But the whole book is handicapped by the small, low-res pictures, and those are then made even worse by the really awful paper stock.

Other than reference-type data, like torque settings, most of us refer to a manual because we're not entirely sure how to perform a task. Or maybe we just need a reminder because it's been awhile. A good manual will combine good text with great pictures to illuminate exactly what is needed. This one seems to have pretty good text. But the other half, the photos, really suck. The difference between what you squint at here, trying to understand what is going on, and Jim Bade's wethead video ([...]), is profound.

So with that said, yeah, I'm disappointed in the book. I'd probably still have bought it, knowing it was done on the cheap, simply because I'm one of those guys who believes you can't have too many windows shining light on a task. But it's too bad Haynes didn't take the opportunity to make this the really solid effort it could have been. For what it costs they certainly should have.

For those looking to work on liquid-cooled BMW's, my advice is to get Bade's wethead video as your first and primary resource. This would be a distant second.

EDIT: I RETURNED THIS BOOK TO AMAZON AND DROPPED ONE STAR. TOO MUCH TO PAY FOR WHAT'S PROBABLY THE WORST PRODUCTION QUALITY OF ANY BOOK I'VE EVER SEEN.

Printing quality spoils its contents.

As you know I preordered this book 3 months earlier, and finally received it today.
Contents are good.
But the bad thing about this book is that many pages (>10 pages)are so poorly printed(almost indistinguishably palely printed,almost white blank pages).
At first I thought I should return it and ask amazon to replace it with a well-made one, but gave up cause I was tired of waiting so long for it to be done right.
Quality control matters.

The worst Haynes manual I've ever purchased and I've purchased quite a few. As others have said the quality of paper stock is horrible and almost entirely illegible, worse than a cheap paperback but the most expensive. I'm torn between returning or keeping.

"I never considered myself to be a musician when I was growing up. In fact, I was thoroughly convinced I did not have what it takes to be able to play music.

I took cello lessons and failed miserable. I took piano lessons without making much progress. I sort of learned to play the recorder in school, if you can call playing hot cross buns playing.

What I’m getting at is that I was a terrible musician. I couldn’t sing, I couldn’t keep time, I couldn’t play an instrument, the list of things I couldn’t do with respect to music is long.

I found this particularly frustrating because my father is an absolutely fantastic professional saxophone player. I figured somewhere in me there had to be an inherent talent for music.

I was very wrong.

What I realized as I grew older was that my father didn’t have an inherent musical talent either. What he did have was an unstoppable drive to succeed.

It took me a few years to get over my false idea that I could never be a good musician.

A few years earlier my father had bought me a guitar as a Christmas present. It was sitting in a dusty case in my room, neglected.

I had recently met a man named Jacob, another amazing musician. Jacob’s talent was with string instruments, particularly the bass. I asked his advice about what I should learn first.

He told me to learn music theory, so I went online and began to read. I read a lot and started to teach myself scales. I was still really terrible at the guitar, but I kept at it, and slowly I improved.

I stress the word slowly.

A couple weeks into this process I asked Jacob to teach me guitar, and he said he would. I quickly found out that Jacob–despite being a wonderful player–is a horrible teacher.

Jacob cannot think like a beginner, he cannot break down the knowledge and present it in bite sized pieces that are easy to swallow and digest.

I wrote this book with that in mind.

During the process of teaching myself the guitar, I learned a lot about how to teach guitar. I applied what I learned to write my best-selling guitar series: Scott's Simple Guitar Lessons.

I’m still learning today. Music is extremely complicated and eclectic. I know for a fact that I will never master music, but that was never my goal.

My goal was to be able to play with other people and enjoy doing it.

I've achieved that goal, and it was worth the work.

Now I want to help you achieve your musical goals, no matter what they are.

I want to use what I learned the slow, hard way to make your learning process fast and easy.

Just bought this bc amazon recommended it (I'm a sucker for impulse buys!). Glad I did, it explains the concept of the circle of fifths in a guitar friendly way and with patient, descriptive language. I'm always learning about guitar, and teach a bit too. This is a tool for both.

Learn something new......... teach yourself (sort of)

I'm pretty much self taught and I've been trying to learn what the Circle of Fifths is all about for some time now. I wish this book was available long before now. Finally.......a book that discribes with examples and diagrams that makes it much more understandable to me. I've since bought several more titles in this series, and have exchanged several e-mails with these books author, Scott Harris. He actually sits down and answers my questions in greater detail than I ever expected from anyone. I'd recommend this series to any beginner or anyone having problems with the specific subjects these books address. I hope to see future subjects as I am always interested in learning something new.
