Adventure Capitalist: The Ultimate Road Trip, by Jim Rogers

Drive . . . and grow rich!

The bestselling author of Investment Biker is back from the ultimate road trip: a three-year drive around the world that would ultimately set the Guinness record for the longest continuous car journey. In Adventure Capitalist, legendary investor Jim Rogers, dubbed “the Indiana Jones of finance” by Time magazine, proves that the best way to profit from the global situation is to see the world mile by mile. “While I have never patronized a prostitute,” he writes, “I know that one can learn more about a country from speaking to the madam of a brothel or a black marketeer than from meeting a foreign minister.”

Behind the wheel of a sunburst-yellow, custom-built convertible Mercedes, Rogers and his fiance, Paige Parker, began their “Millennium Adventure” on January 1, 1999, from Iceland. They traveled through 116 countries, including many where most have rarely ventured, such as Saudi Arabia, Myanmar, Angola, Sudan, Congo, Colombia, and East Timor. They drove through war zones, deserts, jungles, epidemics, and blizzards. They had many narrow escapes.

They camped with nomads and camels in the western Sahara. They ate silkworms, iguanas, snakes, termites, guinea pigs, porcupines, crocodiles, and grasshoppers.

Best of all, they saw the real world from the ground up—the only vantage point from which it can be truly understood—economically, politically, and socially.

Here are just a few of the author’s conclusions:

• The new commodity bull market has started.
• The twenty-first century will belong to China.
• There is a dramatic shortage of women developing in Asia.
• Pakistan is on the verge of disintegrating.
• India, like many other large nations, will break into several countries.
• The Euro is doomed to fail.
• There are fortunes to be made in Angola.
• Nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) are a scam.
• Bolivia is a comer after decades of instability, thanks to gigantic amounts of natural gas.

Adventure Capitalist is the most opinionated, sprawling, adventurous journey you’re likely to take within the pages of a book—the perfect read for armchair adventurers, global investors, car enthusiasts, and anyone interested in seeing the world and understanding it as it really is.

From Publishers Weekly
Financier Rogers retired at 37 and motorcycled around the world, turning the trip into the book Investment Biker, a hybrid of business advice and travelogue. That journey, however, failed to squelch his wanderlust. Instead of enjoying his sedate life teaching finance, Rogers decided to take his fiance and a souped-up Mercedes on a frighteningly intense road trip: three years, 116 countries and 152,000 miles. Like the car that plowed through snow, mud, sand and highways on every continent, Rogers's memoir of the journey is its own breed. Although Rogers writes, far too briefly, of life-changing events like getting married and hearing of his father's death, the book has an uncommon level of detachment. Also, even though Rogers shares investment advice and observations about the planet's political economies, his thoughts are too general to serve as business lessons. The result is an adventure tale without heart and a finance book without teeth. Rogers tries to make up for this by describing experiences like eating fried silkworms and watching prostitutes caught in the world's sex trade. Mainly, though, he chronicles prosaic details, like taking car ferries and talking to border guards, and then riffs on politics, money, immigration and culture.

From Booklist
Rogers, a Wall Street success story who has been called "The Indiana Jones of Finance," once circled the planet on a motorcycle, which landed him in The Guinness Book of World Records and resulted in his first book, Investment Biker (1994). In 1999 he set out on another world-record drive around the world in a custom-built yellow Mercedes convertible with his fiancee, Paige Parker. Starting out in Iceland, the trip took three years and encompassed 116 countries, many of which are rarely visited, in a continuous swath across Europe, the former Soviet Republic, China, Africa, the Middle East, and the Americas. No one had ever driven overland following these routes, a total of 152,000 miles, another Guinness world record. Rogers' insightful commentary on the political and historical topography of these diverse countries cuts through stereotypes to give us a glimpse of the world the way it really is, for better or worse. This is a gutsy travelogue adventure from a guy who shoots straight from the hip, and it really hits the mark. David Siegfried

Let My People Trade - The Gospel according to Jim
By A Customer
Jim Rogers may never hit the list of top 10 best selling authors but that's not because his latest book lacks any of the important characteristics of a bestseller. The only disqualifier is self-imposed by the author. The book is designed to blow away many common illusions and prejudices about the world we live in. It is not the stuff popular fiction is made of.
Jim is a former hedge fund manager who retired at 37, following a successful stint on Wall Street alongside George Soros. In the early nineties he published his first book Investment Biker, a story of his round-the-world trip by motorcycle.
His new book called Adventure Capitalist-The Ultimate Road Trip describes his second round-the-world trip, this time by a custom built Mercedes-Benz car. He set out with his wife Paige and a team of two other guys in 1999. The trip took them on a 240,000 kilometer journey through 116 countries and ended three years later.
I believe that this book should be required reading at schools and colleges not just because it beats Phileas Fogg's journey hands down in intellectual stimulation, but because the book is also a compendium of free-market ideas and live comparative social analysis.
Jim's starting point was to search for investment opportunities. He set out with the open mind of a moneymaker on pilgrimage to find the truth about market conditions. He is looking for profitable opportunities, businesses and countries to invest in and is not prepared to accept conventional wisdom, official or ideological distortions. He has equal contempt for the party politics in US as with those of any other country he visits. He lashes out against Turkmenbashi, the dictator in charge of Turkmenistan, for perpetuating his own brand of Stalinist cult of personality and destroying the country in the process. But then shows the same contempt for President Bush for confusing devaluation with depreciation and also with former President Clinton who he blames for failing to observe and react to the creation and bursting of the biggest market bubble in decades. "I would cast a pox on both their houses-the Democrats and the Republicans" he proclaims in exasperation.
Adventure Capitalist exposes some official and popular myths for what they are in a way that made me look at politics and religion from a very different perspective. In China, Jim tells of attending service in a Chinese Christian Church, where the local worshipers, while singing "Onward Christian Soldiers" never realized that in lands as far as North Carolina there are people like Jesse Helms who are frothing at the mouth while bemoaning religious persecution in their country.
Despite not being able to obtain a visa to drive freely though Iran, Jim still admits to holding some small investments in the country and suggests forgetting the official analysis coming from Washington. "...there is a lot of positive change coming from Iran." he claims.
Jim squarely lays the blame on the British for their Imperial invention of the passport and for the subsequent regulation of immigration by Government bureaucrats worldwide. His prediction is that in some parts of the world passports will not manage to stop the changing of borders.
He talks of countries where he likes to invest and economies that he believes are on the verge of collapse. Which ones are those? Well, let's say I don't expect he will be a best selling author in Moscow.
Jim Rogers will probably not be officially proclaimed as prophet any time soon, but I know there will be people who will quote passages of the Adventure Capitalist for the years to come.

Jim Roger's Excellent "Guide to the World"
By Terry Smith
I have learned more about the world from Adventure Capitalist than from any other book I've ever read. In case you're not familiar with the author, Jim Rogers, he's an Alabama boy who moved to New York to become one of the most legendary investors in Wall Street history. He co-founded the Quantum Fund, one of the best-performing hedge funds of all time, in 1973 with partner George Soros and "retired" in 1980 at the age of thirty-eight. The Quantum Fund gained over 4,000% during its first ten years. In addition, Jim Rogers and George Soros are legendary for making a billion dollars for the fund during a single day of currency trading. Jim is particularly famous for investing in stocks, bonds, currencies, commodities, and everything and anything else--long and short--all over the world. If a truck of coffee beans turns over in Columbia, Jim can tell you how it will affect pork belly futures the next day.

Jim chronicled his first trip around the world, on a motorcycle no less, in Investment Biker. Adventure Capitalist is his report of a three-year trip around the world at the turn of the millennium (1999, 2000, and 2001) through 116 countries. No motorcycle this time though. With his beautiful fiancee Paige accompanying him (they married during the trip), they traveled in a custom-built, four-wheel-drive, convertible, Sunburst Yellow Mercedes.

The book is non-stop adventure supplemented with Jim's excellent political and economic commentary. Here are some quotes that I highlighted in the book:

"Ulan Bator, the capitol of Mongolia, is perhaps the most technologically up-to-date city in the world, totally digital. With the fall of the Soviet Union, a free and independent Mongolia benefited from numerous sources of foreign aid, and with no infrastructure to upgrade, it leapfrogged about three generations of technology. The whole city is wired with fiber-optic cable, enabling you to jack into the Web from almost any phone in town... Everybody in Mongolia has a digital cell phone. The nation's nomads, crossing the country on horseback, carry them. There is a cell phone in most yurts."

"The liberator of the Ivory Coast and its first president was Felix Houphouet-Boigny... He was going to make the country's cathedral larger than Saint Peter's until the pope intervened. In the end, at the pontiff's urging, he made it two centimeters smaller."

"Tanzania, in my opinion, when it comes to tourism, is the single best country in Africa... it has not yet been overrun by foreign visitors... It has beautiful beaches on the Indian Ocean. It has the exotic, ancient island of Zanzibar... It has game parks that are unique in the world, teeming with animals... Tanzania is one of the safest countries in Africa. And it is cheap... There were animals everywhere. And no people."

"In India, self-described as a great incubator of information technology, we could not even use mobile phones universally. We had to buy a different phone for almost every city. A mobile phone in China works everywhere in the country. The Indians are extraordinarily resentful and jealous of the Chinese... China has grown far more than India in the last twenty years, and China has infrastructure--highways, telephones, mobile phones. India has virtually none of these."

"You will not find another city in the world that is as rich and as safe as Singapore."

"My chief impression of Paraguay today is that it should not exist. The place should be dismantled and sold for parts."

"In Buenos Aires I went to the bank, changed all my pesos into dollars, and got them out of the country. The banker handling the transaction scoffed at me, as did several politicians... in three months the collapse of the Argentine economy led the news all over the world."

The Right Road
By Betty Toole
I received "Adventure Capitalist" from Amazon less than 48 hours ago and with many other things to do I have still managed to read over half of it. ... I find it a great read, especially for couch adventurers who can take vicarious pleasures in crossing Siberia, eating exotic food, and meeting 10 years later some of the characters introduced in "Investment Biker."
As to financial advice I disagree with Publisher's Weekly. I think Jim Rogers is right on target for what he gives the reader, if the reader really pays attention, is effective criteria for deciding where to invest: look at the currency at borders, watch the black market, internal and external debt, and bureaucracy. Way back in October when I heard Jim on CNBC, I listened, bought euros, and made enough to re do my kitchen. He does not specifically say buy, this or that, but by looking at economies in a fresh, common sense and "real way," from Russia to Japan to China to Korea, he does get to the heart of the matter.
Rogers has has updated the fascinating material from his website which chronicled his journey. The pictures on the web site really give a complete picture of the journey. However, hopping and skipping through the journey on the web site I missed some of the personal events. The book puts those personal events in context. There is enough of the personal saga in the book to engage the reader, but not enough to distract from the title of the book, "Adventure Capitalist." It is a fun adventure that everyone can take along with Jim

Limited value
By J Lee Harshbarger
I am an ESL teacher who bought this book for use in private lessons with a businessman who was in the USA temporarily. I was particularly attracted to the line on the front cover that says, "Enclosed cassettes let you hear business English as it is spoken in true-to-life situations." I consider that statement to be a flat-out lie. The cassette tapes have the most unnatural, scripted "conversations" that even my student recognized as being unnatural. As a way to be able to prepare oneself for business settings, the tapes are worth next to nothing.

I have given this book a generous rating of two stars because it does have some value for someone who can read well (the book has a lot of reading) and wants to familiarize themselves with some business terms in English, if all they've had is academic or regular classroom English.

This is designed as a self-learning book, so it doesn't work well in a tutoring or classroom situation. Unfortunately, business books that don't focus on business writing are scarce in ESL, so there isn't much to choose from, thus some English learners may find some value in this.

A Difficult Way to Learn Business English

On the positive side, "Let's Speak Business English" is a concise phrasebook for the business English student. However, the language is often unnatural and the exercises provide very little practice for effectively learning the expressions.

Conflict and Development (Development Matters), by Eleanor O'Gorman

During the 1990s the drive of liberal peace efforts in the form of humanitarian intervention transformed the ways in which traditional development assistance operated in war and post-war situations. From Somalia and Rwanda to Bosnia and Sri Lanka, conflict, security and development became more intertwined as more integrated programmes and interventions were advocated by the international community. Conflict and Development, whilst serving as an in-depth introduction to key themes and context, questions the extent to which international aid has over-reached in seeking to engage more centrally in addressing the causes and consequences of violent conflict. Using this framework, the author traces the evolution of the conflict and development agenda and explores the politics of aid and policymaking in relation to international conflict. By taking a combined approach of theory, policy and practice this vital new book explores and comprehensively explains the impact of conflict on development and vice-versa through the series of concise thematic chapters.

War Diary (The German List), by Ingeborg Bachmann

Austrian writer Ingeborg Bachmann (1926–73) is recognized as one of the most important novelists, poets, and playwrights of postwar German literature. As befitting such a versatile writer, her War Diary is not a day-by-day journal but a series of sketches, depicting the last months of World War II and the first year of the subsequent British occupation of Austria. These articulate and powerful entries—all the more remarkable taking into account Bachmann’s young age at the time—reveal the eighteen-year-old’s hatred of both war and Nazism as she avoids the fanatics’ determination to “defend Klagenfurt to the last man and the last woman.”The British occupation leads to her incredible meeting with a British officer, Jack Hamesh, a Jew who had originally fled Vienna for England in 1938. He is astonished to find in Austria a young girl who has read banned authors such as Mann, Schnitzler, and Hofmannsthal. Their relationship is captured here in the emotional and moving letters Hamesh writes to Bachmann when he travels to Israel in 1946. In his correspondence, he describes how in his new home of Israel, he still suffers from the rootlessness affecting so many of those who lost parents, family, friends, and homes in the war.War Diary provides unusual insight into the formation of Bachmann as a writer and will be cherished by the many fans of her work. But it is also a poignant glimpse into life in Austria in the immediate aftermath of the war, and the reflections of both Bachmann and Hamesh speak to a significant and larger story beyond their personal experiences.Praise for the German Edition“A minor sensation that will make literary history. Thanks to the excellent critical commentary, we gain a sense of a period in history and in Bachmann’s life that reached deep into her later work. . . . What makes these diary entries so special is . . . the detail of the resistance described, the exhilaration of unexpected peace, the joy of freedom.”—Die Zeit

Review
“Far from the elliptical voice most readily associated with Bachmann, one is struck by the directness and simple honesty of the [War Diary]; the passions, stubbornness, and humor of a young woman, and her real fear, are all profoundly moving. But one also gets a sense of her literary tastes at this time (Baudelaire, Rilke and Mann) and the philosophical fascination which would lead to her academic career and, one might add, the clarity and precision of her later writing.” (Modern Poetry in Translation)

"If the years 1938-45 had not been . . . "
By R. M. Peterson
Ingeborg Bachmann (b. 1926, d. 1973) was an Austrian author, poet, and philosopher. She was well-connected in post-War German literary circles. In 1945, she was a girl of eighteen, living in Carinthia (the southernmost state of Austria).

The first fifteen pages of this brief book are excerpts from a diary that Bachmann maintained between 1944 and 1946. The excerpts reflect her loathing for the Nazis (even though her father had been a Nazi since 1932), her dodging of Allied bombs, her joy when Germany was defeated and peace returned, and a touch of romance with a soldier of the British occupation forces. The soldier, named Jack Hamesh, turned out to be a displaced Jew from Vienna; he had been orphaned and as a teen-ager he had escaped from Austria to England on one of the Kindertransport. He was surprised to find a young woman from a Nazi family who had read and appreciated Thomas Mann, Stefan Zweig, Schnitzler, and Hofmannsthal, and he quickly fell in love with Bachmann. She valued him as a friend and was stimulated intellectually by their conversations, she probably reveled in the shock effect of socializing with a Jew, but it appears that she never seriously thought of Hamesh as a potential life partner.

The bulk of the book consists of eleven letters that Hamesh sent Bachmann after he left Austria, first to go to Italy and then, after discharge from the British Army, to Palestine. They are tender and wise and lonely and sad. Hamesh cannot suppress his profound disappointment that Bachmann has spurned him, nor can he suppress a feeling of exile from life. "Who would have believed that in 1938 they would see a child wandering round the world alone just because it had been born a jew?" But Hamesh tries to maintain "a positive attitude towards the struggle to survive" - "that is, not simply to dream of all the things I could have been, how many opportunities I lost, all the things I might have achieved . . . if the years 1938-45 had not been."

Both Bachmann's diary and Hamesh's letters are touching, and they provide a peephole on a forlorn time. But they are short and query whether there is enough of them to justify a book. There is an afterword that, among other things, discusses briefly how events recorded in Bachmann's war diary appear in refracted form in some of her adult fiction. Thus, WAR DIARY probably would be of interest to fans and students of Ingeborg Bachmann. For others I can only give it a lukewarm recommendation.

A small but moving account
By Glynn Young
Ingeborg Bachmann (1926-1973) was an Austrian-born poet, essayist, novelist and radio dramatist. Not as well known as other members of her circle, Heinrich Boll and Gunter Grass, she is still considered an important member of the post-World War II literary generation that helped Europe find its way out the physical and psychological devastation of the war wrought by Nazi Germany.

Jack Hamesh (1920-1967) was a soldier in the British Army. He had been an older member of the Kindertransport – the evacuation of thousands of Jewish children to Great Britain after the Nazi violence of Kristallnacht (“night of broken glass”) in Germany in 1938. After World War II, he settled in Palestine, eventually finding employment as a dock worker and later in harbor administration.

No one connected the two until the publication of Bachmann’s “War Diary” in 2010 (in German; 2011 in English). The summer of 1945 during which they met Bachmann would always refer to as “the loveliest summer of my life.”

At the end of the war, Bachmann and her family fled to a home in a rural village. Her father, a schoolmaster, was a soldier in the German army and had been captured by the Americans. Their place of refuge was occupied by the British Army. Jack Hamesh was part of the occupying forces.

They discovered love – a love of literature. Bachmann has hated the Nazis, and part of her “resistance” was to read forbidden books – Thomas Mann, Rainer Marie Rilke, Karl Marx and others.

Hamesh had lived in Vienna before he was sent to safety in Britain. His parents had died before the war; his uncle used influence to get him included in the Kindertransport. As a soldier in 1945, what had been left of his family had perished in the Holocaust. He had read many of the same books as Bachmann. And so a friendship began.

“War Diary,” a small work (108 pages, including notes, afterword and translator’s statement) is divided into two parts. The first part in Bachmann’s of the period right after the war. The second is Hamesh’s letters, written after his unit was moved to Italy, his discharge and emigration to Palestine. (Her letters, often referred to in Hamesh’s, no longer exist). He wrote for almost two years, the last posted from Tel Aviv in July 1947, and their tone suggests he was at least a little in love with her. Bachmann was more interested in figuring out how to get into university.

And yet she kept his letters until her death, part of the record of that “loveliest summer.”

To read the diary and the letters today is to see two people sharing their love of literature and a sense of loneliness and displacement. The worlds both of them knew, on different sides of war, were destroyed. She at least had family left; Hamesh had nothing except himself. But they shared their mutual love of books and reading, even if it was only for a few short months.

“War Diary” also serves as a reminder that our parents and grandparents were young once, with hopes and dreams interrupted by war. It’s a small work, but a moving one.

Steamy, sexy read
By The Romance Reviews
Pirates in space are just as sexy as the pirates at sea.

Jacquelyn Marcone aka Captain Jack earned her reputation in the Marcone family as one of most talented captains. Crew fight to serve under her. Most think Captain Jack is a male and she does nothing to convince them otherwise. Unfortunately for her, Pirate Haydrian is gunning for her and thinks she's a man.

The case of hidden identity is amusing and pivotal for this plot to work. Initially to keep Jack safe, keeping the deception was the best choice. As Jack learns more about Haydrian, it isn't so black and white for her anymore. The story does pull on the heartstrings of many. It's understandable what Haydrian does. However, the comparison to Robin Hood is a fail for me. The good people of Nottingham were being taxed to death. Haydrian's people were not taxed to death. Still, there are many parallels.

This story is a lovely science fiction fantasy piece where the lines of good and evil are blurred. When a civilization is decimated by war, famine and disease, what does a leader do to survive? Haydrian makes some hard decisions after every avenue is closed off to him for aid. His people desperately need medicine. He'll gladly turn criminal and steal medicine to save lives. Captain Jack thwarted him too many times and Haydrian is going to make him pay.

The characters in this story are delightful and engaging. Jack is stubborn yet yields in screaming sexual submission. Haydrian is a tough and caring Dom who is weighed down by heavy responsibilities. They are a good match for each other and Ms. Michaels does an admirable job of showing it. The chemistry is definitely there between the two and when it clashes into hawt erotic sex, it's explosive.

The BDSM scenes in this story are steamy goodness with spankings and forced orgasms. The flogging and nipple clamps are added delights. The BDSM is light and more about the sex than the D/s portion. All of it is arousing and gives this story a 3.5 star rating.

This kinky science fiction/fantasy tale is for those who love the tarnished knight.

HOT Read!

A swashbuckling romance with a space twist, and a heavy dose of erotic spice; Her Pirate Master is part of a larger series by Trista Ann Michaels but stands alone beautifully.

Captain Jacquelyn "Jack" Marcone is taken hostage by Haydrian Victis, who's known throughout the solar system as an infamous pirate. Haydrian has no idea that the woman he's kidnapped is Captain Jack Marcone, but he does think he can trade her for Jack. The chemistry between Jack and Haydrian is off the charts, they push and pull and she surrenders to him beautifully. Haydrian is a pirate and a Dom and Jack wants to submit badly even when she can't help but defy the man who kidnapped her. This story reminds me of the books I started romance on, stories of strong heroines who fight against love and life with arrogant heroes that are so hot and dominant they seduce the heroines into their beds.

The world building is well done, I could easily see this as a movie or miniseries, it played like that in my head. I could see the images, the ship, the bleak darkness of space and then Haydrian's home world ravaged by war.

The sex is off the charts and very inventive. I loved the way that Jack gave in to him and just let herself enjoy and Haydrian's softer gentler side made me sigh happily. I recommend this space romance for lovers of dominant gentle pirates and the heroines strong enough to love them.
