Look out Nate and Cannonball!

I couldn't be more pleased with this book. I bought this version (Bb) and Eb so that my eighth grade twins who play trumpet and alto sax could be introduced to jazz. They've been playing in the school band since 5th grade and it seemed time to introduce them to some jazz. The tunes are easy and great to play--the real deal--and the scales provided allow them to improvise notes that fit the tunes. I get to play along with my guitar to provide the rhythm. We're not the Adderley brothers yet, but we're up and running! Great purchase for me and the guys.

Marvin Perry, now retired, taught history at Baruch College, City University of New York. He has published several successful Cengage Learning texts, including WESTERN CIVILIZATION: IDEAS, POLITICS, AND SOCIETY (senior author and general editor); WESTERN CIVILIZATION: A BRIEF HISTORY; the leading Western Civilization reader, SOURCES OF THE WESTERN TRADITION; AN INTELLECTUAL HISTORY OF MODERN EUROPE; SOURCES OF EUROPEAN HISTORY SINCE 1900 (senior editor); HUMANITIES IN THE WESTERN TRADITION (senior author and general editor); and WORLD WAR II IN EUROPE: A CONCISE HISTORY. His scholarly work includes ARNOLD TOYNBEE AND THE WESTERN TRADITION (1996); coauthor of ANTISEMITISM: MYTH AND HATE FROM ANTIQUITY TO THE PRESENT (2002); coeditor of ANTISEMITIC MYTHS: A HISTORICAL AND CONTEMPORARY ANTHOLOGY (2008); and coeditor of THE THEORY AND PRACTICE OF ISLAMIC TERRORISM: AN ANTHOLOGY (2008). Myrna Chase, emerita professor, dean of liberal arts, and provost of Baruch College, City University of New York, is a specialist in 19th and 20th century western European history, with a special interest in England and France and the history of political and social ideas. She published ELIE HALEVY: AN INTELLECTUAL BIOGRAPHY (1980). As co-author of the Cengage Learning text WESTERN CIVILIZATION: IDEAS, POLITICS, AND SOCIETY she contributes the chapters on the Industrial Revolution, the Industrial West, and Imperialism.

James R. Jacob was Professor of History (now retired) at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, CUNY. His publications include ROBERT BOYLE AND THE ENGLISH REVOLUTION (1978) and HENRY STUBBE: RADICAL PROTESTANTISM AND THE EARLY ENLIGHTENMENT (1983). James R. and Margaret C. Jacob have jointly edited THE ORIGINS OF ANGLO-AMERICAN RADICALISM (1983). As co-author of the Cengage Learning text WESTERN CIVILIZATION: IDEAS, POLITICS, AND SOCIETY he contributes the chapters on the Renaissance and European Expansion.

Margaret C. Jacob is a well-known scholar in early modern European history, and a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Her most recent book is THE FIRST KNOWLEDGE ECONOMY. HUMAN CAPITAL AND EUROPEAN ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT 1750-1850. She currently teaches in the history department at UCLA. Her publications include: THE NEWTONIANS AND THE ENGLISH REVOLUTION (1978) and THE RADICAL ENLIGHTENMENT: PANTHEISTS, FREEMASONS, AND THE SCIENTIFIC REVOLUTION (1981). James R. and Margaret C. Jacob have jointly edited THE ORIGINS OF ANGLO-AMERICAN RADICALISM (1983). As co-author of the Cengage Learning text WESTERN CIVILIZATION: IDEAS, POLITICS, AND SOCIETY she contributes the chapters on the Reformation, the National State, the Scientific Revolution, and the Enlightenment.

The Tenth Edition is Poorly-Written and Not Worth Its Cost

I have spent the past several decades studying history, and as such I own a lot of books about various historical subjects. However, my primary area of interest is Western Civilization, and as such I have read the eighth edition of "Western Civilization: Ideas, Politics, and Society," and I purchased the ninth edition several years ago. I was impressed by the ninth edition; I have read it often, and I have frequently used it as a reference. However, after having purchased the tenth edition, I am no longer impressed.

While I realize that history marches on and history books which cover modern subjects need to be kept up-to-date, this tenth edition seems more like a "money grab" by the authors. By comparing the ninth and tenth editions, it is clear that the authors simply added additional verbiage to several of the passages, which was often unnecessary, and that would lead me to believe that the authors were attempting to artificially increase the apparent number of changes in this edition in order to pseudo-justify the need for academic institutions to ditch their existing editions in favor of this new edition.

What's more, the tenth edition was very poorly edited. A large number of passages throughout the book are written quite poorly; a first-year college student could easily have re-written many of those passages with greater clarity. As a result, this edition reads like it was rushed to market.

On a side note, after having used the two books in this series for several years in various editions, I have grown increasingly dissatisfied with the book's maps. Since the books have only a few colors to use when publishing maps, the author's usually employ geometric patterns rather than colors to differentiate geographic regions on the maps. As a result, readers are forced to spend a great deal of time trying to discern which pattern goes with which feature, rather than the publisher spending a few extra dollars to make the maps more legible.

In summary, the tenth edition was a major disappointment; I will be returning my copy. But regardless of my choice to return my copy, the overall quality of the tenth edition is so poor that it in no way justifies its exceedingly-steep price tag.

It's a beautifully written book

Author and feminist Susan Faludi has written a memoir, "In the Darkroom", about her father. This is not a simple, loving memoir about a beloved father, but rather about a father who seemingly was at war with the world, including the world of his family. Faludi's father, born in Budapest in 1927 as Istvan Friedman, and died in Budapest in 2015, reinvented as Stephanie Faludi. It was the life between the birth and death that Susan Faludi writes about.

Istvan Friedman seemed to be a man who lived a life with few "constants". Born of Jewish parents in inter-war Hungary, he was not close to his parents, though he rescued them in 1944 in Budapest when they had been taken by the Arrow Cross. After living through WW2, he touched down in Copenhagen and Brazil before settling in New York City, where he changed his name to Steven Faludi, married and raised a family in 50's, 60's, before being divorced in the mid-1970's. Susan's home life while growing up with him in the house was volatile, to say the least. Father and daughter split for many years after Susan became an adult and Steven moved back to Budapest. In 2004, she received an email saying that "Steven Faludi" was now "Stephanie Faludi" - her father had had a sex-change operation in Phuket, Thailand. In the years between 2004 and Stephanie's death, Susan and her father tried to understand each other. She spent time with him in Budapest, where the two wandered the city as Susan attempted to recreate her father's life in understandable fashion.

From my reading of the memoir, Stephanie Faludi seemed to be a person in a lifelong search of his identity. Was he Jewish? He married a Jewish woman in a temple, but raised his two children without much Jewish knowledge; instead celebrating with a passion the major Christian holidays. Was he a man or a woman? Was he a Hungarian, despite the persecution Jews in Hungary had long endured? Even the title of the book, "In the Darkroom", which alludes to Steven Faludi's career in photography and to the Photoshop-like changes he was able to make to pictures, also seems to refer to the permutations he makes to his life.

Susan Faludi's book is about many things. Assimilation, the trans-gender movement, father-daughter relationships, even the history of Hungary. But most of all it is a story of a daughter trying to understand a father, who is trying to understand himself. It's a beautifully written book.

This is simply one of the best books I've read in a very long while. It was presented to the public as something sensational--middle aged woman finds her elderly father has had a sex change operation--well, that's sensational, no question. Who wouldn't ask themselves what if? But Faludi takes this dramatic event as an occasion to explore the psychological complexities of individual identity. Her transsexual father is an emblem of how fluid identity is, and how it gets formed not only by individual agency, but also by inexorable historical, outside events. She combines meticulous historical research with personal experience, and the result is an extraordinary book. I recommend it without reservation.

As engrossing as a mystery novel, yet history larger than the story of one person

Susan Faludi writes honestly about an intensely dishonest person - her father, who, late in life chose to undergo gender reassignment surgery. While the story is primarily about the author's experiences as she attempts to understand and learn about her father, it is also a deft linking of larger historical currents - the Jews in Hungary, the sexual stereotyping of postwar North America, and the Shoah. The sections on the Faludi family also show the seeds of Faludi's own feminism, and how it was forged by her father with his relentless insistence on taking gender stereotypes to ridiculous and painful lengths in order to promote his own highly insecure self image.

I've always been intrigued by Buda Pest ever since I read John Lukacs "Budapest 1900" a book that Faludi mentions in her text. She spends time exploring the city in which her father grew up, and for anybody trying to understand how this once backwater city came to rival Paris for a brief time prior to WWI you could not read a better book.

I do not disagree with the reviewer who makes the point that Faludi's father tried to get her to write "his" side of the story. However I also think that while it would have been impossible for the author to uncover all of his deceptions, she creates enough of a sense of Stephen/Stephanie so that we know that there was no way anybody -- not even this gifted journalist -- could uncover the entire story. An amazing book.

Every page is an invocation to connect to the soul, every sentence she writes will land in your heart. The clarity in her words is simply astounding. I saw her present this material at Kripalu last spring and Myss is certainly on a mission to help people connnect to the Divine and she's pulled out all the stops! We are all very fortunate to have her in our midst--she is indeed a true mystic and one of the few genuine teachers who recognizes her greatness, but is also humble enough to to recognize that she is, indeed, just as human as the rest of us. DEFY GRAVITY is one of the best books of 2009 and, quite honestly, one of the best books ever!

A big miss for Myss

Defy Gravity screams "buy me," but please consisder resisting. Despite the compelling title, the A-list reviews, and the track-record from a bestselling author, this book is a big miss for Myss. While Myss has some distracting writing style flaws, her most serious problem is an inability to articulate focused, actionable content in an easy-to-understand format.

More specifically, here's why this book is so very confusing. First Myss organizes the book into five truths. Then she talks about the seven shadow passions and the seven inner graces. Then she presents the four noble Buddhist truths. Then she introduces five mystical laws. Then she talks about the seven steps to defy illness. In between there's talk about chakras and Buddha and Jesus, Saint John of the Cross, Saint Teresa of Avila and other so-called mystics like Abe Lincoln.

Oh my goodness, it's all too much. Way too much. Have you ever gone into someone's house who doesn't know when to stop decorating, buying things or hoarding. It's a mess, and that's exactly what it's like to read Defy Gravity. Nothing holds your interest because there's too much going on. Too many steps. Too many different voices competing for your attention.

Myss makes a mighty try to pull it all together, but her recipe doesn't work and the book lacks cohesive sense. I give Myss credit for her passion and for drawing our attention to the fact that the potential for healing is real in us all. However, if you seriously want to learn more about developing a miracle state of mind, I direct you to The Vortex by Hicks/Abraham or Left to Tell by Illigabiza.

FABULOUS - a good place to begin or continue

So far, this is the best! Defy Gravity is her most comprehensive, easily accessible work. In fact, if I only bought one book by Caroline Myss, this would be it. I have read and/or listened to all of Caroline's work (except for Entering the Castle which I now feel ready for). While I've learned from each, some of her material is easier to absorb than others - and the format makes a difference, even within the same work. For example, I found Anatomy of The Spirit more accessible by CD than in the book.

Caroline Myss is logical, methodical, honest, and cares deeply about helping us all realize our highest potential. She is definitely a "you can pick yourself up by your own bootstraps" kind of gal. She does calls it likes she sees it, freely admitting her own humanity and her occassionally snarky side because she wants you to know YOU ALREADY HAVE EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO THRIVE. She gives you a detailed map and asks if are willing to accept some personal responsibility, then pray to the divine (in the planet, god of your choice, or your best self - Caroline Myss is a big picture person not limited by a religious tradition, though she was raised Catholic), and lastly act on what you know in your heart to be true. Does she dare suggest prayer? Yes. However, this book in no way says "just pray".

Words matter. Caroline Myss knows this. She is daring and pushy - but always with heart behind it so don't worry about intent. However, if the word "pray" is a trigger that trumps all others for you in a negative way, then this is probably not the book for you. If you can expand your definition of prayer to encompass "focus your thoughts and intentions", then you might be able to hear the bigger message, and it is worthwhile. Do you feel that there should be more in your life? Are you having trouble accessing your own intuition - and following its advice? Read on. Defy Gravity ties many pieces together. As I said, I think this is her best work so far. I read it cover to cover, bought extra copies for gifts, and am now about to buy the CD so I can absorb it another way. If you are worried about the money, don't forget about the library - but read it and let Defy Gravity help your spirit do just that.

In this book, Richard S. Kim examines the central role played by immigrants in the independence movement that sought to liberate Korea from Japanese colonization. Regarding Japanese rule as illegitimate, Koreans in and out of the Korean peninsula viewed themselves as a stateless people. Their independence activities had to be carried out from abroad, creating conditions for the emergence of a diasporic nationalism. Using English and Korean language sources, Kim traces how Koreans in the United States articulated visions of national sovereignty, drawing particularly on American political rhetoric and symbolism, and increasingly relied on U.S. state power to mobilize international support for their cause. Their efforts to establish an independent homeland necessitated their participation in civic and political activities in the United States, engaging in organizational activity that led to the development of an ethnic consciousness and paradoxically established them as an American ethnic group. Ultimately, Kim argues, homeland nationalism was central to the assimilation of Korean immigrants as American ethnics, even as they were denied U.S. citizenship.

Essential reading about the roots of Korea - U.S. relations

This engaging narrative about Koreans who organized overseas against Japanese colonialism provides crucial insights into U.S.-Korea relations and little-known causes of the Korean War. Considering that Korea is currently the most militarized spot on earth, with U.S. military forces stationed there continuously for almost seven decades, it is critical that Americans gain a better grasp of the facts of Koreas's 20th-century history, so we can understand our role and responsibility as taxpaying citizens of a global superpower. Written as a series of episodes focused on the key players among Korean nationalist ex-pats, "Quest for Statehood" also supplies a vital and indispensable missing piece of history about Koreans in America. Without understanding events between 1905-1945, we cannot make sense of Korean-American history, which, when focused primarily on post-1965 immigrant experience, exists suspended in dissociated narratives about "model minority" entrepreneurial success stories, victimization in the Los Angeles riots, Christian ethnic enclaves, and strange oppressive silence about geopolitics. I can't praise "Quest for Statehood" highly enough for filling key gaps in our understanding.
