The Author: Alan A. Block was a high school teacher for eighteen years, and presently is Professor of Education at the University of Wisconsin-Stout. He is the author of three previous books, and has published extensively on matters of curriculum and classroom practice. He is a member of Beth Jacob Congregation in Mendota Heights, Minnesota.

It is like reading a book in a different language

if I could give negative stars I would here! The Author Alan Block creates his own words and readers are expected understand. It is like reading a book in a different language. I would come upon Words I have never heard so I would look them up in multiple dictionaries and these words were not in any of the dictionaries, not even online. You become more confused than before reading the book.

About the Author
Edgar H. Schein is Sloan Fellows Professor of Management Emeritus at the Sloan School of Management at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He is the author of numerous books, including Process Consultation Revisited, The Corporate Culture Survival Guide, Career Anchors, and most recently, Helping: How to Offer, Give and Receive Help.

Orgnizational Culture in a lot of depth

"Organizational Culture and Leadership" is perhaps the most in-depth work on the subject of organizational culture. It is the more academic and more in-depth version of the Corporate Culture Survival Guide by the same author. The book is about 400 pages and consists of five parts.

Part one provides the basics of the rest of the book. It defines organizational culture and other types of culture. It also describes Schein's three levels in which organizational culture is represented in organizations: artifacts, believes and values, assumptions. It also introduces the two case studies that are used throughout the book: DEC and Ciba-Geigy.

Part two explores different dimensions of culture. It doesn't limit itself to organizational culture but also to the different assumptions in national culture. First it looks at assumptions related to adaptations (to external events) and internal integration. Then it dives in several dimensions of culture such as reality, time, space and relationships. Ed Schein devotes a chapter to explain why most organizational cultural dimensions and surveys are too much a simplification of reality and introduces a bit on how to decipher an organizational culture.

Part three looks at culture over time. It starts with how culture evolves in new groups (interesting!) and from there looks at the different stages of organizations and how culture evolves. This part has quite a lot of duplication with the Corporate Survival Guide book of the same author (unfortunately for those who read both). It also explores what leadership can do to change or evolve the culture.

Part four and five focuses a bit more on the leadership role in evolving and changing the organizational culture. It describes in depth Schein's organizational assessment method to explore the organizational culture in one particular dimension that matters for some change that is wanted in the organization. Part 5 links the book to the larger topic of learning organizations and defines what a learning culture and a learning leader is.

I enjoyed "Organizational Culture and Leadership" quite a lot. It is thorough and a bit repetitive at times (especially for people who have read Ed Schein's Corporate Survival Guide). Some parts were better than others. I especially enjoyed the culture creation in new groups and the parts about learning organizations. But the book is definitively recommended for anyone who is interested in organizational culture or involved in attempting to change an organizational culture. For those who read Ed Schein's Corporate Survival Guide, there will be a lot of repetition and the case studies are the same (though more detail). 4 stars.

How and why organizational cultures, microcultures, macrocultures, and subcultures reveal multidimensional human nature

This is the Fourth Edition of a "business classic" that was first published in 1985. I am always curious to know how a book with a 400-page narrative is organized. In Part I, Schein defines and describes culture as a structural concept; in Part II, he focuses on the content of culture and the process of deciphering assumptions; in Part III, he describes and explains various mechanisms and processes by which culture changes, noting that change in organizational midlife "is primarily a matter of deliberately taking advantage of the diversity that the growth of subcultures makes possible"; in Part IV, he shifts his attention to "the difficult question of how to change culture when the normal evolutionary processes are not working or are too slow; and then in Part V, he shifts his attention again to "many new kinds of work units such as multicultural task forces, v ventures and partnerships, and v networks. These new kinds of organizations will require a different kind of culture management because they will be [begin italics] multi [end italics] cultural. There will also be muticultural challenges that must be met with effective multicultural leadership.

As authors of "classic" business books often do, Schein provides early on (Page 7) the essence of what he will explain in the 21 chapters organized within five Parts: "Culture is an abstraction, yet the forces that are created in social and organizational situations deriving from culture are powerful. If we don't understand the operation of these forces, we become victim to them. Cultural forces are powerful because they operate outside of our awareness. We need to understand them not only because of their power but also because they help to explain many of our puzzling and frustrating experiences in social and organizational life. Most importantly, understanding cultural forces enables us to understand ourselves better." These are among the dimensions of exploration within which Schein guides his reader during a journey of discovery.

He concludes the Fourth Edition this way: "We have examined cultures, microcultures, macrocultures, and subcultures. The details and content of what goes on varies enormously, but the fundamental cultural dynamics are much the same at every level. If we remember that culture is our learned solution to making sense of the world, to stabilizing it, and to avoiding the anxiety that comes with social chaos, then we have taken the first important step toward deeper cultural understanding."

unique concepts for analyzing corporate artifacts

Schein approaches this analysis of corporate cultural organization & leadership with concepts influenced by cultural anthropology (esp. Clifford Geertz). Just as an anthropologist would research kinship & values of an obscure tribe, Schein analyses corporate cultural artifacts like brand images, trademarks, graphic art, multimedia ads, architecture, mottoes & slogans, and other expressions of corporate culture to determine the values & relationships of corporations . Schein provides a framework by which to recognize unique insights into the 'personality' & values of modern corporations. Schein's research is genuinely original in its application of cultural anthropological concepts to firms that often seem impersonal or spend millions on Mad Ave to devise a non-factual image of 'espoused values' which belie internal arti-FACTS. Inconsistencies between what is presented to the customer vs what is presented to the stock-holder are apparent upon deeper, 'thicker description'. A reprint of this insightful text by a social scientist of Schein's caliber is deserved. Highly recommended as a methodology or theoretical approach -- his case studies are dated and a new edition with many recent examples and illustrations applying his framework would improve this text. Also, see W G Dyer Jr's work for similar approach to corporate cultural analysis focused upon leadership transitions in family businesses.
Like most management academics, Schein is not a critic of multinational corporations; however, his framework is useful to both corporate managers and to crtics of MNCs like anti-trust agencies, consumer advocates, and environmentalists.

A story that touches upon a sensitive subject in a sensible direction

A story set against the backdrop of a typical Indian household where the woman is expected to “obey” the man of the house – should make an interesting reading. This story was of course interesting enough albeit minor clinches which sort of reduced the levels of enthusiasm that I would normally have while reading such a book.

The protagonist, Leela, a dark skinned average girl is labeled unlucky thanks to “manglik” planetary alignment in her horoscope. Her parents favor her brother over and she fights for the recognition that she deserves. She dreams of being an RJ but parents force her to get married. When a handsome boy from a wealthy family comes knocking in the form of a proposal, Leela envisages her dreams taking flight. Sadly life has other plans for her, her dreams are shattered even before they actually take flight. Delving into previously traversed path, Leela embarks on a journey to discover herself, this journey is all what the story is about.

I bet that for any seasoned Indian reader, the above paragraph would have probably contained about a handful of clich�s and stereotypes. Yes, this story had a lot of that – dark skinned and meek girl, abusive relationships, parents who believe the husband is the god. These very stereotypes are what made this book fast paced and kept me hooked. I was waiting for a point where all that changed and that didn’t exactly happen the way I expected, so score one for the writer for putting a good twist! The characterization was pretty much above level for what is expected from a rookie writer. Nevertheless, I felt there was an overdose of the protagonist. With a bit of fleshing for other characters, like her parents or her maid who was also played a vital part in the story could have certainly helped. I also felt the writer ended up modifying the core traits of a couple of characters to suit the ending that she wrote. May be she intended for those characters to actually repent for their acts, but it wasn’t really convincing.

The writer, however, must be lauded for taking on the serious issue of domestic violence and tackling it in an almost appealing manner. Not every new writer takes on such a complicated subject!

MY SAY: A story that touches upon a sensitive subject in a sensible direction.

Redeeming and journey of self discovery

The Other End of the Corridor is coming of age story of a young girl, Leela who has had it tough right from her birth. She is condemned as an inauspicious child, the one who’d bring misery and doom to those around her. Unloved by her own family, she is married at 19. She dreams of leaving all that behind and thinks of starting a happy and a meaningful life ahead. But reality strikes and she finds herself abused physically and mentally by her depressive and manic husband and control freak mother-in-law. And her dream to make it big in life vanishes into thin air.

Leela’s story is the one that we read and see commonly around us. Her struggles and challenges highlights the existence that a large number of women go through in our society. Leela’s story is one of survival, despite the odds being heavily stacked against her. The author has captured Leela’s pains and woes with such honesty and emotion that I could feel for her.

The characters are real and have their failings and shortcomings, which makes the story all the more believable. The language used is simple and the story flows effortlessly thereby engaging the reader in you completely. The book title and cover are appealing and truly reflect the content and mood of the story.

The Other End of the Corridor is Leela’s redeeming and journey of self discovery, her development from a naive girl to a woman who goes on to live her dream, is well crafted. As I said earlier, Leela’s story is something that we all are familiar with and actually there is no newness in the book. But such stories need to be read and encouraged because these bring to the fore the oppression of the women and their sufferings while being subjected to domestic violence. Such books may help to change the prevailing mind sets and break the social stigma attached to these abusive relationships.

This one is a must read for all those who believe in women empowerment

I wanted to read this book from the moment my eyes fell on the cover. It’s simply gorgeous. Yeah, I am like that. I so fall for an eye-catching cover. I filled the form with alacrity when the book came up for blog tour via The Book Club, without even checking out the blurb or genre.

When I started reading the book, I couldn’t understand the first page at all. After finishing the book, I feel it’s been placed wrongly, not giving the right impression of the book. It’s important that the book begins in an interesting way.

The moment I started reading the second page I was hooked. But...

Spoilers galore from here on... STOP READING if you haven’t read the book yet

I could so relate to the beginning, the people from the guy’s side coming to view the girl, she being a manglik, the astrologer insisting on being a know-all, the parents desperate to get rid of the girl, a duty to be performed for the sake of society and more.

As I read more and more, I started feeling depressed actually. Wasn’t there an end to Leela’s woes? What’s a story that can’t make her a heroine? were the questions that came to my mind. I trudged on and am I glad I did!

The language is flawless and the proofing perfect. This is a major plus for me when I read a book. So a special kudos to the author and publishing house on this!

Here is this girl – yeah, Leela is a girl who’s not even out of her teens when she gets married to Vishal – struggling to lead a life, smothering all her dreams. She treated so badly by her husband and also by her highly educated, educationist mother-in-law. Vishal is a spoilt brat who doesn’t have a job to go to. He’s a chain smoker and a wife-beater. Leela is shocked with the turn her life has taken and doesn’t know how to get out of it. Her parents wouldn’t hear of her woes. They are not interested. Her elder brother is too selfish and doesn’t want to listen to his sister’s problems.

Vishal getting a job based in Bangalore appears to be a relief. But away from Delhi and her mother-in-law, it’s not funny for this housewife of barely twenty to manage the household, especially on such a tight budget that her husband gives her.

Leela happens to meet two other women who used to live in Patiala during her school days. Priya is an airline pilot who’s confident and doesn’t need men in her life. She’s got a career and has adopted a girl-child, bringing her up all by herself.

Harleen is married to a super-rich guy and has a posh life. She and her friends are ready to befriend the middle-class Leela.

It brought tears to my eyes as I watched Leela finding some fun in life when she gets to have a makeover at Harleen’s home; gets to wear some of her classy clothes. This is a kid who doesn’t have a life. Why wasn’t I surprised when she tries her hand at smoking and drinking and a bit of flirting? Facebook comes to her rescue at one point. I couldn’t blame her for creating a fake account. Come on, who doesn’t want appreciation? She has no life with her son-on-a-bitch husband.

Even as I felt depressed reading the book, I couldn’t help being fascinated reading the way Leela’s life unfolded in front of my eyes; how she bounces back again and yet again, never giving up on her life. She scored a major point in my eyes as not once did she think of committing suicide.

I waited and waited for someone to rescue her. Nobody did. For a few pages, I thought it was Jai who’s going to be her knight in shining armour. But no!

In the end (okay, I won’t go into the details; please read the book to find out what happens), it’s Leela for herself. Okay, she has her girlfriends who help her out.

What for me was a moment of triumph as a woman was when Leela comes up aces, landing on her feet after all the abuse she undergoes.

My hats off to the author for penning such a touching book! Yeah, I shed a lot of tears on this one.

Congratulations Sujata Rajpal! This one is a must read for all those who believe in women empowerment.

Love Lang Calendars!

My mom gets a Lang calendar every year, so this year for Christmas I decided to buy her the one she wanted. My sister and I joked that I could do all my Christmas shopping on Amazon because they have EVERYTHING...so when I searched for the item I was pleasantly surprised that Amazon even has Lang calendars (and for less than store price). Love the calendar & love Amazon!

I am unconvinced.

This text would be a revelation to someone unfamiliar with Tom Kyte, Joe Celko, or Chris Date. However, given that I own books by all of the former authors, I have to say relunctantly that I am unimpressed by much of the book. His explanations are tough to unravel, and while I do not doubt the math behind some of what he chooses to employ to prove his assertions, I find the reading experience tortuous. This is not an easy book to use, and I suppose his initial caveat that "this is for advanced practitioners only" is supposed to buy him an excuse if you fail to comprehend his text. In my case it does not, as I am confident it's not me, it's him.

It is quite disappointed, especially compared to GoF's Design Patterns.

Cannot find any practical design patterns for SQL programming. Although I was expected to learn some practical design patterns for SQL programming just like GoF's Design Patterns in the field of object oriented programming, however, it is quite disappointed.

reads like a technical database journal

ok vadim knows his stff. but i want to see more emphasis on the practical sections (like sql servers pivot operator, which i use in practice all the time but only got 3 pages, whereas really weird stuff like graphs got like 50 pages.
if your into the super deep stuff u might check this out, however if u are a practical user, than this will be pretty useless.

Falling Back is based on over three years of ethnographic research with black and Latino males on the cusp of adulthood and incarcerated at a rural reform school designed to address “criminal thinking errors” among juvenile drug offenders. Fader observed these young men as they transitioned back to their urban Philadelphia neighborhoods, resuming their daily lives and struggling to adopt adult masculine roles. This in-depth ethnographic approach allowed her to portray the complexities of human decision-making as these men strove to “fall back,” or avoid reoffending, and become productive adults. Her work makes a unique contribution to sociological understandings of the transitions to adulthood, urban social inequality, prisoner reentry, and desistance from offending.
