Reads more like a baby's board book

Ok, but not overly helpful for kids because it really only addresses the physical aspects of having two different homes. Very simplistic. Not something the kids are going to want to read over and over. Reads more like a baby's board book. Not sure its kids at that age need a book to help them adjust unless it was free.

Great Book for kids whose parents are divorcing.

I bought this book for my daughter who is 11 years old I am reading it before I give it to her and it seems Perfect for her!!!! I think it is clear and right to the point with all the feelings and emotions that have happened and that will transpire as things change. I feel it will help her along this tough process but assure her that things will be good again.

Gets everything right

These writers really know Texas - I live in Houston, but I travel all over the state (I use these books to get day trip ideas) and they really nail pretty much every aspect of the Lone Star State: the best places for barbecue, the essential sights, the culture... like most Lonely Planet guides, the coverage of off-the-beaten-path destinations and outdoor activities is top-notch, which I love (although Frommer's has a more nuanced rating system and Fodor's has the prettiest layouts... but that's a discussion for another day).

In short, this is overall the best Texas guide I've read. My only hang-up is the writing in certain chapters (the Gulf Coast, in particular) is pretty dry, although the rest of the chapters are quite engaging. The quality of information throughout, however, is impeccable.

(P.S. - To the reviewer mentioning the "gross" food recommendations in Lockhart - I strongly disagree with you, as does apparently Texas Monthly and the long lines of people waiting out the door.)

I wished there were more substantial separate guides for each of the major Texas cities

Honestly, each of the sections in this book should probably have it's own book, Dallas, San Antonio, Houston, Austin, etc. I just spent 9 days in Houston and got this book, in addition to several other relevant tour guides. In the end, I stopped using the other guides and consulted just with LP. In general, LP writers have a better feel for what is important, what is fun, and what is interesting. Houston is the fourth most populated city in the USA and growing. There's lots to do and while the 40 or so pages devoted to Houston were good, the best among the sources I had, I wished there was more. A problem in writing a Hoston tour guide is that it is growing and changing so quickly. Galveston is also interesting and the section on Galveston (just an hour away from Houston), should have been much, much bigger, too.
addendum (3/12/16): Just came back from 9 days in San Antonio and the Hill Country. I found these sections of this book just as good, and after buying and trying to use the other guides, I found this one the best

Good basic intro with a focus

Blundell has taken a famous work of art, on the Acropolis, at the heart of Classical Athens, and used it to introduce and discussion women's roles in the city at its height of power. While specialists may disagree with some ideas and therefore profit from considering her take on classical women, her approach is also enticing enough and short enough to keep undergraduates interested. I think this is a great book to use in a women's history course or a course focused on the classical period. Needs better citations overall.

Dr. Chihara has experience with S+ and R from her work at Insightful Corporation (formerly MathSoft) and in statistical consulting.

TIM HESTERBERG, PhD, is Senior Ads Quality Statistician at Google. He was a senior research scientist for Insightful Corporation and led the development of S+Resample and other S+ and R software. math stats the resampling way

This is an undergraduate introductory text in mathematical statistics for sophomores or juniors who have had a first course in probability but no courses in statistical inference. The authors are experts in SPlus from having worked at Insightful Corporation and are also knowledgeable in R. Tim Hesterberg did his dissertation at Stanford on the bootstrap under Brad Efron. This covers all the traditional topics but has the special feature of introducing bootstrap and permutation methods treated equally with the classical inference methods. Resampling is introduced in a friendly way with good explanations and examples for illustration. Real examples are provided throughout to demonstrate all the methods in the text. The book is clear. The descriptions are accurate and many key references are included. Topics include exploratory data analysis, Hypothesis testing and confidence intervals (classical and resampling), sampling distributions, excellent introductions to bootstrap and permutation methods,regression (classical and bootstrap)and some special topics that include smoothed and parametric bootstrap and importance sampling.

Careless errors

This was the assigned text for my statistical inference course last semester. It was confusing and poorly written. I do NOT recommend it. When I bought in on Amazon in January, I noticed the only people to recommend it knew the authors--first warning! There are MANY careless errors. In several chapters the notations change without notice, sometimes mid-proof! There are answers to some of the end-of-chapter exercises in the back, but they don't include explaination, and several of them are wrong. Figuring out the right answers was a nice class exercise.

The only good point is the exercises involving R, which are a nice way to illustrate the tests in the text. The companion website contains data sets, a brief R tutorial, and a partial list of errors. (You'll still need to pick up an R reference book). If this is your assigned text, good luck. Maybe it will be better in a later edition.

Good but with a lot of typos.

It's a good book. It helps with gaining insight into the formulas and theorems etc. by getting around the math and showing with R scripts what is really going on. I do recommend this to anyone who might have gotten lost in a traditional formula based stat teaching. The only major complain I have is that typos are rampant everywhere in this book - just a little too much to be considered a serious book written with adequate professionalism. Make sure you download the latest errata, and be wary of many that aren't listed. This book deserve a major revision.

Continues to be a great resource for the pharmacotherapy of over-the-counter drugs. A few areas of practice have changed somewhat since the last publication of this book in 2011, among which this book includes are:

• Vaccine information
• Availability of new Advil film-coated tablets, a potentially faster-acting version than standard ibuprofen propionic acid tablets
• Safety labeling changes to PPIs regarding concomitant use with methotrexate sodium for injection
• Inclusion of current pregnancy risk categories for drugs and some natural products, where appropriate
• Inclusion of references for exclusions for self-treatment

There are several other updates as well that are discussed in the book's preface. This book also has the most up-to-date product availability information, whereas the 17th edition includes some products that are no longer recommended or are no longer on the market.

About the Author
Philippe Jorion is Professor of Finance at the Paul Merage School of Business at the University of California at Irvine. He holds an MBA and a PhD from the University of Chicago and a degree in engineering from the University of Brussels. Dr. Jorion has authored more than eighty publications--directed towards academics and practitioners--on the topic of risk management and international finance. He is on the editorial board of a number of financial journals and was editor of the "Journal of Risk," He has won the Smith Breeden Prize for research, the William F. Sharpe Award for Scholarship in Financial Research, and the Graham and Dodd Scroll Award. When a guard accuses him of being a member of Al Qaeda, he sees that race and culture may explain his predicament. Eggers, compiling his account from interviews, sensibly resists rhetorical grandstanding, letting injustices speak for themselves. His skill is most evident in how closely he involves the reader in Zeitoun’s thoughts. Thrown into one of a series of wire cages, Zeitoun speculates, with a contractor’s practicality, that construction of his prison must have begun within a day or so of the hurricane.

The New York Times Book Review called Zeitoun "the stuff of great narrative fiction," and critics agreed that Eggers tells Zeitoun's tragic story without the postmodern trickery and tirades he has exhibited in previous works. Instead, he allows the story to tell itself while imbuing Zeitoun's tragedy with deep sympathy and emotion. Although Eggers didn't witness Hurricane Katrina's devastation firsthand, he captures the experience through Zeitoun's eyes and approaches his subject very intimately. Although his wife, Kathy, leaves town with their four children, Abdulrahman (known as Zeitoun because few locals can pronounce his first name) stays behind, hoping to protect their home, their job sites, and their rental properties. Simple Story, Simply Told, Simply Horrifying

First off, Zeitoun painted my house about 8 years ago so maybe I'm a little bit biased. I also think Dave Eggers is a great writer (doubly biased, perhaps). This story needs to be told to a large audience and Mr. Eggers is just the person to tell it. Maybe we can knock Eggers for the simplistic style he chose to write this book. On the other hand, this story frankly didn't need much artistic enhancement. It is shocking on its own accord and told in a very straightforward manner. Appropriate for the material, I believe.

Every American NEEDS to read this book. What we find in it is an America that lost its core. It is truly shocking that no matter how bad things were in New Orleans immediately following Katrina (most reporting was inaccurate and sensationalized), we are still Americans with common beliefs in our system of rights. That these rights were tossed out the window is appalling.

Mr. Zeitoun is a kind and gentle man. His signs are ubiquitous in New Orleans and he is a stranger to no one and well liked by all who have met him. That he could be mistreated is a crime and an outrage. That others were rounded up and treated even worse is one of the worst black eyes on our country. As I read this book I just kept saying out loud over and over again, "This cannot be America."

I had never read anything by Dave Eggers before, but his reputation set some pretty high expectations. I am a fan of narrative non-fiction and non-fiction, and enjoy books like "In Thin Air" or "The Colony." I picked up the book yesterday, and finished it this morning. It was spectacular.

The writing style is perfect. It is not over the top with descriptions, but still makes you feel as if you are there, canoeing along in the streets of New Orleans. The subject matter is interesting, not just in a "can't stop watching this train wreck" sort of way, but because it ties together Hurricane Katrina and 9/11, two of the largest national events of the last decade. I never thought or knew about much beyond what I saw on TV regarding Katrina. This book thoroughly explores one story of one family, but manages tell it from a perspective that everyone can understand.

Much like the book Three Cups of Tea brought attention to the plight of women in Pakistan, I hope that Zeitoun will bring to light the problems and issues that still need attention in the US and in New Orleans.

Eggers took the main event, Katrina, and by telling the Zietouns' story, made it of human scale.

I'm rambling--all I can say is, I think this book is worth a read for everyone. It isn't preachy-it is interesting. I learned a lot about many different subjects. I hope it ends up on the best seller list and stays there for a long time. Unlike some books that end up on the best seller lists, this one really deserves to be there.

beauty and horror

Zeitoun is a creampuff to read and then there is a huge lump in your stomach where the content boils. I finished it in a couple of days, finishing on a cross-country plane flight and got off in a furious mood that didn't wear off until the end of a hot bath and a tall cold rum drink. Massive injustice has been done in New Orleans and this book follows it right down to the foundations. You won't read another word about Katrina without finding your thoughts completely reoriented. Let's hear it for the truth.

This remarkable sequel to Stalin As Revolutionary, 1879-1929 ( LJ 9/1/73) is at once the best of Tucker's many books and arguably the finest work in the burgeoning field of Stalin studies. The author's achievement synthesizes recent Soviet revelations, better-known sources on Stalin, and personal interviews into a major work of biography. Tucker's Stalin is neither simply mad nor opportunistic, but the methodical "Iosif Grozny," an idealized Ivan the Terrible, and, tragically for millions, one whose terror far surpassed that of any czar. Tucker's depiction of Stalin and the terror machine is persuasive; but more controversial is the assertion that the purges served a "cathartic function" of exculpating Stalin for his own conspiracy against the revolution. The psychological dimension coexists with the political. Thus, Stalin's decimation of foreign Communists is both an expression of xenophobia and preparation for the 1939 Hitler-Stalin Pact. Whatever one's judgment of author or subject, this book can be safely recommended for all academic and public libraries.

Required Reading

Reading this book gives one insight not only on Stalin but also on the political system that he constructed around his personality. Its effects are still being felt in today's Russia--much of Stalin's struggle with his identity and place in the world was and still is mirrored by the Russian state itself. Tucker is a masterful storyteller; one comes away with a great sense of both the historical moment and the political weight of the subject matter. This book should still be required reading for anyone who wants to understand the Russian political system.

A great book on a bad man

Over the years, I have read a number of books on Stalin, some good and some awful and I am convinced that this book, along with Professor Tucker's other work, "Stalin as a Revolutionary" is the best work on this subject (Adam Ulam's work would be the best one volume study of Stalin).

What sets this book apart from the others is Tucker's first rate understanding of Stalin and the world in which he operated. Only someone as stubborn as Stalin could have imagined he was creating paradise on earth while at the same establishing one of the most hellish regime's in world history and Tucker captures him in all of his evil. Even though he is a widely respected actademic, Tucker writes in such a way as to make this 20th century monster understandable to expert and beginner alike.

The only complaint that I have is that Tucker has yet to follow through with the next part of Stalin's career. It seems to be truism of late that no one can complete a multi-volume work on one of the leaders of World War II. Kenneth Davis was unsuccessful in his magnificent FDR biography as was William Manchester in his attempt to capture Churchill in his series of books on the great prime minister. I am only hoping that wealth of material that has become available with the fall of communism and the Soviet Union does not hamper Professor Tucker's efforts.

The finest treatment of its subject

Neither Stalin, the collectivization crisis, nor the terror suffer from a dearth of good and serious studies. Yet despite the crowded field, Tucker's "Stalin in Power" is by far the best treatment of all three complex events. No other book sets out as credible, well-researched and well considered a theory of the workings of Stalin's mind. The great challenge presented by the Soviet thirties is the comprehension of the real logic behind what appears from the outside as mass irrationality. Most writers' personal models of depth and social psychology are inadequate to the task. Tucker succeeds, by a significant margin.
