As the local vicar’s daughter and a childhood friend, Moira Dorsey naturally set aside her hopes of a family of her own to care for the earl’s daughters. Lucas’s return makes it impossible for her to remain since he broke Moira’s heart years ago, but the girls have other ideas.

Lucas realizes he needs Moira to keep his personal demons at bay as well as deal with two rambunctious girls. He offers Moira a marriage of convenience, hoping to keep his dark secret, aware he’s too broken to be the husband she deserves.

Moira discovers Lucas’s cold demeanor hides deep scars but glimpses of the boy she loved give her hope. She counters his proposal, asking for a babe of her own, wanting Lucas to see he’s not the monster he believes.

Unable to deny his growing feelings, Lucas agrees, but his past disrupts their second chance at love, dragging Moira and the girls into danger. He soon realizes he must share his terrible secret with Moira and risk losing her forever in order to stop the villain who threatens them all.

Loved this latest historical romantic suspense!
By Jennie Marts
Loved this latest historical romantic suspense! I have been waiting for this third book in the Secret trilogy and it was so worth the wait! I love trilogies where the characters you love from other books show up again and it was so fun to see my favorites from Passionate Secrets and Unraveling Secrets make appearances. I love marriage of convenience stories and Lucas was a total swoon-worthy hero. I adored Moira and her determination to help. This one had it all: steamy romance, a hot hero with secrets to hide, and suspense. Great read- I loved it!!

I’m shattered it’s over . . .
By NQT
Well, I’ve been in love with this series from the start, and I’m so sad it’s the end. So sad.

Lucas Stanby, the new Earl of Berkmond, has been in Brazil, trying to live with his ailment—an aura reading ability. But now he must return to England to square away his new responsibilities as earl. Awaiting him is his childhood love, Moira Dorsey. They’ve known each other almost all their lives, but when Lucas had an accident while at university, which gave him his aura reading skills, he’d thought he was too much trouble to deal with and rejected Moira, thinking it was better for her.

All those years Moira had secretly been in love with him, and soon enough they have to meet again, to which Lucas eventually has a business arrangement for her. She accepts. (Can you tell I’m trying very hard to not give away any spoilers? :) I hope I’m not sounding too vague.) They must spend a lot more time together, which means they both fall hopelessly back in love with each other. But what can either of them do with their love?

I loved reading more about Lucas, since his aura reading ability was quite severe and my heart squeezed for him throughout this book. I liked Moira too; she seemed sweet and loyal.

Although I was impatient to find out how this book ended and how the characters were to overcome an evil scientist, which it did so brilliantly, I was so sad when I finished. May have to reread it!

90% Is Good
By arc
I enjoyed the first 90% of this book. The plot is a bit different and you have to suspend your disbelief to accept the WMD premise of the villainous plot but that's okay - at least it was creative. It moved at a good pace and the main characters were both sympathetic, intelligent, likable and not hysterical or whiny. At the 90% point however the heroine does something incredibly stupid which is actually out of character with her previous behavior. She is a smart woman who does something dumb to create the climactic confrontation and the circumstance for the hero to realize how much he loves her. The conflict could have been created without making the heroine stupid. I really don't like authors making women do dumb things to show how "feisty" she is and so the heroes can rescue them. This is the third book in a three book series but you don't have to read the first two to understand it. There is plenty to fill in the back story of the heroes two friends and their shared experience at the heart of the all the stories.

Amazing debut
By Matthew M. Robare
Peter Storey's "Human Nature" is one of most amazing debut collections for a young author. The first story, "Day Ten" is very reminiscent of Raymond Carver, yet Storey has an outstandingly unique and original voice. This is especially evident in "Train to Where?", which wants to break away from narrative fiction and into poetry in some places. He has a way with composition, capturing realistic detail in a way that makes reading an experience of all the senses and yet at the same time deftly employs metaphors in the service of description so that the settings are at once realistic and incredibly dreamlike -- the "Dynastic Empire of Juniper" in "Day Ten" or the thunderstorm in "Train to Where" are supreme examples. Many philosophers throughout history have reagarded human nature as fundementally flawed or fallen and therefore requiring the state or church to restrain its destructive and anti-social tendencies, but even they would derive great enjoyment from Peter Storey's "Human Nature."

Some solid short stories
By Charles Q. Pingling
Stumbled on this title looking for post-modern short fiction, was drawn in by its low price, simple description and unintentional pun in the author's name. I liked the diverse settings -- Brooklyn, Wisconsin and a pre-historic forest -- and the variability of the language Storey used. Also, "The Crushing Futility of Everyday Existence" may be the funniest short story ever written since "The Overcoat".

Something to Answer for, by P.H. Newby

Winner of the inaugural Booker Prize in 1969. It was 1956 and he was in Port Said. About these two facts Townrow was reasonably certain. He had been summoned there, to Egypt, by the widow of his deceased friend, Elie Khoury. Having been found dead in the street, she is convinced he was murdered, but nobody seems to agree with her. What of Leah Strauss, the mistress? And of the invading British paratroops? Only an Englishman, surely, would take for granted that the British would have behaved themselves. In this weirdly disorientating world, Townrow is forced towards a re-examination of the basic rules by which he has been living his life; and into a realization that he too may have something to answer for.

A great start for the Booker Prize
By Carl B
Like the others who have reviewed this book, I was lead to it because it was the first recipient of the Booker Prize. I had read a couple of Booker winners previously which I enjoyed, and thought the list of winners would be a quality reading list to help me get over the paralyzation I suffer when trying to pick my next book. After finishing "Something to Answer For", I am excited for the trip I have in store!

What I loved about this book was the uncertainty; trying to figure out what was real and what was not. I felt this kept me more engaged and reading more carefully for the little clue that would make it all clear. Newby does a fantastic job of making you connect with the protagonist, Townrow, and after a long stretch of reading I couldn't help but carry a little bit of his confusion with me, making me question some of my basic assumptions about who I am. It is also refreshing to have stories like this where the character, even after making some dubious choices throughout his life, can still draw you in and remind you that it isn't always black and white: doing something considered morally suspect does not make one a bad person. I love when books make you connect and feel for a person that you might otherwise judge based on a few of their actions.

"Something to Answer For" kept me enthralled from beginning to end, and I highly recommend it for a challenging, insightful read.

Cut and Paste Urban Landscape: The Work of Gordon Cullen (Routledge Research in Architecture), by Mira Engler

During the post-war era, the emerging consumer economy radically changed both the discourse and practice of architecture. It was a time where architecture became a mainstream commodity whose products sold through mass media; a time in which Thomas Gordon Cullen came to be one of Britain’s best-known twentieth-century architectural draftsmen.

Despite Cullen’s wide acclaim, there has been little research into his life and work; particularly his printed images and his methods of operation. This book examines Cullen’s drawings and book design and also looks into his process of image making to help explain his considerable popularity and influence which continues to this day. It presents the lessons Cullen had to offer in today’s design culture and practice and looks into the post-war consumerist design strategies that are still used today.

Review
The once essential distinction between town and country has long since collapsed into an endless stream of images ... . Gordon Cullen played an essential role in this reconfiguration of our postmodern worldspace by developing graphic vocabulary elements of which are now so ubiquitous ... . Engler's important study reveals that by redrawing the obvious, the author of Townscape had an impact far greater than the limits of any town or country.

Dr Sylvia Lavin, Professor, Department of Architecture and Urban Design, University of California, Los Angeles, USA

Through Mira Engler’s perceptive research, Gordon Cullen is revealed as a powerful lens, focussing a broad body of theories and techniques, and projecting them in an accessible, populist – and highly influential – manner. Cullen’s work reflects the approach of the Architectural Review and its explicit promotion of the ideas of Townscape and Serial Vision, but also embodies legacies of urban and landscape thinking that range from Repton to Le Corbusier. Engler vividly reveals the links to theories and practices of film and mass culture, positioning Cullen within a milieu shaped by Eisenstein, Debord and Benjamin, as much as the technicalities of reproduction and graphic design. Not only does Engler give Cullen his place in the history of urban design and planning, she also makes compelling connections to contemporary practices such as website design and blogging, and offers food for thought for current debates, including the critical relationship between modes of representation and the landscapes they create.

Dr Jacqueline Bowring, Professor of Landscape Architecture, Lincoln University, New Zealand

The once essential distinction between town and country has long since collapsed into an endless stream of images that not only mediates our perception but materially transforms the environment into a virtually continuous system that admits no distinctions or limits. Gordon Cullen played an essential role in this reconfiguration of our postmodern worldspace by developing a graphic vocabulary elements of which are now so ubiquitous as to go unnoticed in our saturated visual field. Engler’s important study reveals that by redrawing the obvious, the author of Townscape had an impact far greater than the limits of any town or country.

Sylvia Lavin, Professor, Department of Architecture and Urban Design, University of California, Los Angeles, USA.

Engler (landscape architecture, Iowa State Univ.) provides illuminating insight into the Townscape movement, a post–WW II response, forwarded by architect Gordon Cullen, to dogmatic and Utopian modernist urban principles. Engler describes the development of the Townscape vision as outlined by contributors to the London-based magazine Architectural Review and illustrated by Cullen, then the magazine’s art editor. Engler contends that the Townscape idea was more clearly articulated by Cullen’s alluring cartoonish collages than by the articles. After leaving Architectural Review in 1959, Cullen published a book, Townscape (1961), that drew largely from ideas and illustrations published in the magazine. Townscape was reissued in various forms and in many languages. It primarily comprised images that could be read in various ways. Cut and Paste Urban Landscape describes the extensive, lasting influence of Cullen’s Townscape. The author holds that the non-hierarchical order of Cullen's book helps explain its long-standing popularity and that the characteristic features of the illustrations provide an open-ended definition of the Townscape idea. Thoroughly annotated and adequately illustrated, Engler's book is revealing, convincing, and a welcome addition to scholarship on 20th-century urbanism.

Our Enemy, the State, by Albert Jay Nock

What does one need to know about politics? In some ways, Albert Jay Nock has summed it all up in this astonishing book Our Enemy the State, the influence of which has grown every year since its publication. Albert Jay Nock was a prominent essayist at the height of the New Deal. In 1935, hardly any public intellectuals were making much sense at all. They pushed socialism. They pushed fascism. Everyone had a plan. Hardly anyone considered the possibility that the state was not fixing society but destroying it bit by bit. And so Albert Jay Nock came forward to write what needed to be written. And he ended up penning a classic of American political commentary, one that absolutely must be read by every student of economics and government, Our Enemy the State. Consider his opening two paragraphs: If we look beneath the surface of our public affairs, we can discern one fundamental fact, namely: a great redistribution of power between society and the State. This is the fact that interests the student of civilization. He has only a secondary or derived interest in matters like price-fixing, wage-fixing, inflation, political banking, "agricultural adjustment," and similar items of State policy that fill the pages of newspapers and the mouths of publicists and politicians. All these can be run up under one head. They have an immediate and temporary importance, and for this reason they monopolize public attention, but they all come to the same thing; which is, an increase of State power and a corresponding decrease of social power. It is unfortunately none too well understood that, just as the State has no money of its own, so it has no power of its own. All the power it has is what society gives it, plus what it confiscates from time to time on one pretext or another; there is no other source from which State power can be drawn. Therefore every assumption of State power, whether by gift or seizure, leaves society with so much less power; there is never, nor can there be, any strengthening of State power without a corresponding and roughly equivalent depletion of social power. The theory is good enough and strong enough for the forging of an entire apparatus of libertarian thought, which he does here. But then he pushes the envelope. He discusses American history in a way that you will never read in the civics texts. He praises the Articles of Confederation as the closest model of American freedom. And he blasts the men who hammered out the Constitution as nothing but usurpers engaged in a coup d'etat. Far from heralding the drafters, he exposes them as public creditors, land speculators, money lenders, and industrialists looking for privilege. They tossed out the Articles and used unscrupulous methods to ram the Constitution down the public's throat. It was in this stage of American history, Nock says, that the state was unleashed. Next came the party system, and the dynamics of statism that causes "every intervention by the State" to enable another so that "the State stands ever ready and eager to make" interventions through deceit and lies. One realizes many important points about Albert Jay Nock when reading this. First, he was brilliant, original, and courageous. Second, he hated politics -- indeed he hated politics so much that he wanted a society that was completely free of it. This is why he is often described as anarchist. Third, he surely was one of the great stylists of the English language in the history of 20th century writing. Those who have read Nock know that there is something about his writing that tugs very deeply on one's conscience and soul. This book will linger in your mind as you read the daily headlines. He makes his points so well that they become unforgettable. This book is the ultimate handbook of the political dissident. If you aren't one yet, you may find that Albert Jay Nock is a very persuasive recruiter into his informed army that makes up the remnant who know.

Social Action and Thought vs. Political Imposition and Force
By James E. Egolf
OUR ENEMY THE STATE by Albert J. Nock is a clear examination of what some call a monster or the Super State whose members are enshrined as omipotnent re their position, almost unlimited power, and supposed intelligence. Nock implies that a government expert is a contradiction of terms. Nock states that quite often economic and social problems can be easily solved, but calls for government action make these problems much worse and beyond intelligent resolution.

Nock is clear that society and the state are two different entities. Nock's view was that government authorities' only job is to protect individual rights and not to impose on them. He agreed with Thomas Jeffererson that men have a right to rebel when government officials violate individual rights which, among other places, Jefferson so stated in The Declaration of Independence. Nock gives a succinct view that social pressures, manners, civlity, etc. are better alternatives to state action or imposition to economic and social conflicts. He suggests that laws are passed which can be corrupted or circumvented. Then more laws are passed to "correct" previous legislation ad infinitum. Nock argued that this situation enhances a few who are more clever or have more political influence and creates disrespect for the law. Honest men are often the "losers" re these laws or, as the title of a book states,"Then Ten Thousand Commandments." Nock scoffed at the title of "government experts" who are too often ignorant of the issues of conflicts and have no expertise at all with these issues. Nock argued that such situations created unnecessary enmity and social conflict where none existed previously.

Nock was also skeptical of the legal "system." Nock argued in this book that access to justice, legal remedies, etc. should be inexpensive. Yet, this is clearly not the case. Nock stated that judges, jurists, court officials, etc. made "justice" almost impossible for poor and middle class people. Legal fees, court costs, etc. enhance jurists and court officials at the expense of everyone else. Nock stated what many legal experts do not like to hear this because his comment was true that the "law" was not disigned to insure justice but to follow legal remedies and procedures. In other words, too often the attitude is "Justice be damned and long live the judges and lawyers."

Nock had a brief comment on how the state got/gets and keeps power. Nock stated that without taxes from society, the state is powerless. The state cannot do much if authorities cannot tax men. In other words, members of society pay taxes, and at times excessive taxes, which are either paid by cooperation or what Nock would have considered extortion.Government officials are ideally entrusted to protect rights which Nock believes is the only function the authorities have. Yet, abusive and tyrannical officials are too often the real criminals and act with impunity because of what Ludwig von Mises called "stateolatry" or worship of the state and its leaders.

The book has an interesting comment on land access and ownership. Nock effectively argued that land ownership began/begins with the government granting lands to privledged few who then charge access fees (rents)to those not so privledged to get such land grants. Nock thought land access should be equitable to all. Mutual cooperation and fair competition could be the result. Nock also scoffs at the description of railroad executives who were supposedly "rugged individualists." Nock is clear that they were given huge tracts of land, large government subsidies, and political protection to enhance their wealth and position. One should note that there were many financial/political scandals in the 19th. century which scarely get notice in most history texts re railroad construction.

Albert J. Nock was not a violent poltical revolutionary. He called himself or was called, "a peaceful revoutionary" or, "a little conservative." His poltical writing is not as abrasive as that of H. L. Mencken, but he clarified some of the social and poltical issues that Mencken did. Readers may be interested in Nock's MEMOIRS OF A SUPERFLUOUS MAN and his THE STATE OF THE UNION. Readers will find good writing and thoughtful comments on politics and social life.

If politics interest you, this should be in your library
By secondadd
This classic little book has changed my entire way of thinking about politics. Nock defines the state as an anti-social mechanism for executing the "political means" i.e. taking from one pocket and putting it into another. He traces this back to the founding of our republic and before. Published in 1935, the book was written at an interesting time when fascism and communism were rising, while FDR was domestically pushing economic fascism and using the political means to the fullest.
"Our Enemy, the State" is witty, often eloquently written, and accessible to the lay reader. Take your time and let it sink in. Read the footnotes too! Despite its sad commentary on humanity and the future of our society, one finds the thesis hard to dispute (in Nock's time, the state stole 1/3 of our money; now it steals over half). It's fitting that the introduction is written by a minister. To paraphrase Chesterton, original sin is the easiest Christian doctrine to prove.
One thing you'll see in the book often, without explanation, are complaints against land-tenure. As I understand it, this is based on the teaching of some classical liberals and libertarians (aka. the "land use" school) that monopoly land grants by the state are another form of the political means, as they are invariably given to favored constituencies and individuals (many of America's founding fathers received them). These grants are then exploited by charging some form of rent to the unconnected non-recipients. "Land use" proponents argue that the earth is owned in common by all mankind. The "owner" simply owns improvements to the land such as factories, homes, and income, and there should be community user fees levied on the owner that deny the use of that land to others (These fees are not the same as property taxes that tax improvements and collect revenues for public education. In fact, all taxes on improvements aka. productivity - income, capital gains, estate, etc - are considered a form of robbery).

A Dangerous Book
By Lonestar
One of the best books I have read about the nature of the state. Written in 1935 during the "New Deal", it speaks directly to us today. It is amazing that Albert J. Nock is not regarded as a man with a very clear insight into the future. I would think this book would be required reading for anyone interested in politics and the growth of the state.

Chapter 1

The life of Darth Vader’s secret student took a strange and deadly turn the day his Master first spoke of General Rahm Kota.

He’d had no warning that a moment of such significance was approaching. During his nightly meditations, kneeling on the metal floor of his chamber while construction droids built the Executor, unaware of his existence, he had seen no visions in the pure, angry red of the lightsaber that he held like a burning brand in front of his eyes. Although he had stared until the world vanished and the dark side flowed through him in a bloody tide, the future had remained closed.

Nothing, therefore, prepared him for the sudden deviation from the day’s punishing and unpredictable exercises. His Master was not a patient teacher; neither was he a talkative one. He preferred action to debate, just as he preferred recrimination to reward. Never once in all the days they had sparred together, with lightsaber, telekinesis, or suggestion, had the Dark Lord offered a single word of encouragement. And that was as it should be, he knew. A teacher’s job was not to drag a student along a single, well-worn path. Rather it was to let the student forge his or her own way through the forest, intervening only when the student was hopelessly lost and needed to be corrected.

Even on the wrong paths, he knew, lay some wisdom. What didn’t kill him only made him more powerful in the dark side.

And there had been many, many times he had thought he might die . . .

Breathing heavily after a punishing round of blows, lightsaber lowered in submission, he knelt before his Master and prepared for the killing strike. He could feel the wrath radiating from the Dark Lord like heat—a visceral, angry heat that brought out his skin in gooseflesh. For a moment that seemed to stretch for years, all he could hear was the regular, implacable respiration that kept the man inside the mask alive.

“You were weak when I found you.” The voice seemed to come from the far end of a long, deep tunnel. “You should never have survived my training.”

He closed his eyes. He had heard these words before. They were the closest thing to a bedtime story he’d had as a child. The moral he had taken from them was burned into his mind: Learn . . . or die.

Behind his eyelids he pictured again the clean, cleansing heat of the lightsaber. He had brushed his skin against it many times, defying the pain, and taken numerous small wounds while dueling with his Master. He imagined that he knew what the blade would feel like when it struck him down. Part of him longed for it.

The lightsaber drifted so close to his neck that he could smell his hair burning.

“But now, your hatred has become your strength.”

The lightsaber retreated. With a hiss it deactivated.

“At last, the dark side is your ally.”

He didn’t dare nod or look up. What was this? Some new ruse to lure him into overconfidence and failure?

His Master’s next words made his heart trip a beat.

“Rise, my apprentice.”

Apprentice. So he had always thought himself, but never before had it been said aloud! And that strange motion with the lightsaber . . . Could he possibly have just been knighted?

His lightsaber retracted. It was all he could do to balance on knees that felt suddenly made of rubber. The black shape looming over him was unreadable, limned with crimson from the light of the star shining through the wide viewport to their right. Metal, angular, and functional, the space around them was as familiar to him as the scars on the back of his hand, but suddenly, disconcertingly, everything seemed different.

The apprentice kept his eyes up and his voice level.

“What is your will, my Master?”

“You have defeated many of my rivals. Your training is nearly complete. It is time now to face your first true test.”

A roll call of past missions sped through the apprentice’s mind. Lord Vader had instructed him to dispatch numerous enemies within the Empire down the years: spies and thieves, mainly, with the occasional high-ranking traitor as well. He felt only satisfaction at having fulfilled his duty. His victims had brought their fates upon themselves, these vermin that gnawed at the footings of the Empire’s magnificent edifice.

But this was different. He could sense it in more than his Master’s words. Darth Vader wasn’t talking about some low-life smuggler with no awareness at all of the Force. There could be only one foe he was worthy to fight now.

“Your spies have located a Jedi?”

“Yes. General Rahm Kota.” The name meant nothing to the apprentice: just one of many in an archive of unconfirmed Jedi kills. “He is attacking a critical shipyard above Nar Shaddaa. You will destroy him and bring me his lightsaber.”

Excitement filled the apprentice. He had trained and hoped for this moment as long as he could remember. At last it had come. He could never truly call himself a Sith until he had taken the life of one of his Master’s traditional enemies.

“I’ll leave at once, Master.”

He had taken barely a step toward the door when Darth Vader’s irresistible voice stopped him. “The Emperor cannot discover you.”

“As you wish, my Master.”

“Leave no witnesses. Kill everyone aboard, Imperials and insurgents alike.”

The apprentice nodded, keeping his sudden uncertainty carefully clouded.

“Do not fail in this.”

The lightsaber hanging back at his hip was a comforting, reassuring weight. “No, my lord,” he said, back straight and voice firm.

Darth Vader turned away and gripped his hands behind his back. The red sun painted his helmet with lava highlights.

Thus dismissed, his secret apprentice hurried about his latest, darkest duty.

General Rahm Kota.

The name ran through his mind as he hurried through the warren connecting his Master’s secret chambers. They were sparse, functional spaces, consisting of a meditation chamber, a droid workshop, sleeping quarters large enough for one, and a hangar deck. All were on a concealed level of Darth Vader’s flagship, a space long since written out of the floor plans; it would go unnoticed by the future crew.

The Emperor cannot discover you.

Excited though he was by the thought of hunting Jedi, the reminder of the goal his Master allowed him to share was instantly sobering. All his life he had been trained to turn fear into anger, and anger into power. It was no different, he realized, for Darth Vader. Where else could Lord Vader look for increased power than to the Emperor himself? People were either predators or prey. That was one of the most basic rules of life. Together, Darth Vader and his apprentice would ensure that their joint power only increased.

But first he had to survive an encounter with a Jedi. That his Master had found one at liberty was unsurprising. A handful were suspected to have survived the Great Jedi Purge, and none was more adept at finding them than Darth Vader. The dark side infiltrated every corner of the galaxy; nothing could remain hidden from it forever. Perhaps one day, the apprentice thought, he, too, could seek out his enemies by their thoughts and feelings alone, but like the visions of the future that were closed to him, that ability remained elusive. He had never met a Jedi. Their natures were mysterious to him.

Their history, however, was not. His Master set no lesson plans or written examinations, but Darth Vader did give him access to records surviving from the Republic and the Order he had helped unseat from its position of undeserved privilege. The apprentice had devoted himself to the study, understanding that knowledge of his enemy might mean the difference one day between life and death.

General Rahm Kota.

The name still brought forth no details of combat styles, character, or last sightings from his memory. He would access the records when he reached the Rogue Shadow. There would be time to research on the journey to Nar Shaddaa. If he dug deeply enough, he might find some small detail that would give him an edge when he most needed one. That was the only preparation he required.

Entering the hangar bay, he wound his way through the familiar maze of crates, weapons racks, and starfighter parts. The ambient lighting was dim, with shadows pooling in every corner. The air tasted of metal and ozone—a sharp stink that had by now become very familiar. For some, the underbelly of a Star Destroyer might have seemed a strange place to grow up, but for him it was a comfort to be surrounded by such unambiguous symbols of technological and political power. Ships like these had patrolled the trade lanes of the galaxy for years. They had put down insurrections and quashed resistance around hundreds of worlds. Where else would a Sith apprentice live and learn?

Kill everyone aboard, Imperials and insurgents alike. Leave no witnesses.

Even as he mulled over this new development, a familiar snap-hiss sounded to his right and a glowing blue-white blade sprang into life in a dark corner of the hangar. A brown-robed figure ran forward, weapon raised.

Instantly in a fighting crouch, the apprentice brought his own blade up to block the blow, teeth bared in a delighted snarl.

He and his adversary held the pose for a bare second, lightsabers locked across their chests. The apprentice quickly sized up the being who had attacked him. Human male, fair-haired and bearded, with calm, serious eyes and a firm set to his jaw. Anyone within living memory of the Clone Wars—or possessing free access to the Jedi Archives—would have recognized him immediately.

Yagyu review

Force Unleashed was an excellent story, but im sad to say that the novel falls a bit short of bringing it to life.
Pros
1 Great Game. Like I said, the game was amazing, the story was good.
2 Starkiller. I love Galen Merik, hes the dark jedi who needs redemption i have been waiting for.
3 Darth Vader. We really get to see some of how twisted Vader has become.
4 Great gap filling. This story really fills some of the void left between episode 3 and 4

Cons
1 Poorly adapted. As was already stated in other reviews the book does tend to read like a summery rather then a novel.
2 Confusing flashbacks and out of place events. There was allot of this especially with Starkiller and Juno Eclipse.
3 Really poorly written fight scenes.
4 Starkiller is a bit too powerful.
5 Because the author writes things more like a summery especially the fight sequences things pass way to fast and you can easily find yourself lost or saying, wait what did i miss?

Overall I would recommend it as a good bridge and a good story outline, but as for a well written novelization i would say it falls short of being great. Still if you love the video game this is a great companion or if you like me are a completest then this is a must for your collection.

Typical KOTOR style where the protagonist is bad ass and everyone else can't compare
By Stephan
I played the game after I read the book, so I didn't lose out on the story the same way if I'd done it the other way around. Typical KOTOR style where the protagonist is bad ass and everyone else can't compare, but this time you're working for the dark side. The author did a good job and everything was described well. There's a bit of leeway, because the is so much that the main character is in the dark about--aside from being on the dark side of the force--but without giving any of the story away, I think it's worth reading.

Awesome story between Ep III & Ep IV...should be a series!!
By Roman85
Wasn't sure I would like this one, but after seeing highlights of the game on YouTube, I knew I had to read this one, stories set between "Sith" & "A New Hope" haven't been weighed on as much, so natually I found this story appealing, becasue this story is taking place at the same time as "Death Star" & the "Han Solo Trilogy" books, I worried about conflicts in continuity, but I could spot none, all three are seperate stories inter woven very nicely, In this one Darth Vader has a secret apprentice who he instructs to wipe out any surviving Jedi, the apprentice fulfills this mission as he is sent to kill two surviving Jedi on desolate planets, one of the Jedi has built a amatuer-like temple where he has created manneqiuns in the form of his fallen Jedi comrades, it is a scene right out of Will Smith's "I am Legend" no doubt & he is soon facing off with Starkiller(the apprentice) they fight a good fight but the aging Jedi is no match, Starkiller also tracks down another Jedi in hiding Rahm Kota who he fights a violent fight with, but Kota too has been out of the game too long & is blinded by Starkiller, but is spared, when Starkiller is betrayed by Vader after completing his tasks, he suddenly becomes an anti-hero of sorts, he is piloted by the beautiful Imperial officer Juno Eclipse who is also taken prisoner by the Empire after Starkiller is betrayed & tortured, but is rescued by Starkiller who has developed a fondness for her, he also seeks out Rahm Kota again this time for his assistance in helping bring down Vader & the Emperor, throughout this journey he has a breif encounter with Princess Leia who is apparently awaiting the Death Star plans transmission as well as Bail Organa later on who he tries to help only to discover that Darth Vader is one step ahead of him & has used him to lead him & a legion of stormtroopers to a secret rebel meeting involving Bail & many other delegates, they are all taken prisoner by Vader who once again betrays Starkiller leaving him for dead, Vader then takes Bail & the Rebel delegates to the still unfinished first Death Star where the Emperor plans to execute them personally, but Starkiller ever so resilent is picked up by Juno & they descend to the Death Star where Starkiller sneaks aboard & manages to save Bail & everyone else just in the nick of time which results in a stand off with Darth Vader who he has an intense duel with after Vader is ordered by the Emperor to finish what he started, Starkiller definately gives Vader a mean fight so much that Vader's helmet is knocked off revealing the scarred Anakin & his suit torn to shreads, now I know why the newer suit at the end of "Sith" isn't the one in "A New Hope", the difference in Vader's siut is explained here, this is a cool story & Starkiller is one cool anti-hero, WWE professional wrestler Randy Orton could play him in a film no doubt, beacuse he looks like the character, Scarlett Johansson would be perfect as Juno Eclipse simply beacuse she looks like the character & John Malkovich would be perfect as Rahm Kota, unfortunately it will never happen, but they would be perfect in the casting dept, this one ends fairly well without much of a cliffhanger & doesn't mess with continuity, I fear the second one does, haven't read it yet, but this one is a good stand alone story.
